Abstract: An apparatus and method are provided for producing extrusions of two or more materials such as plastic polymers so as to utilize the characteristics of both materials in a single formation thereof. In one form, flexible and rigid polymers are coextruded through a common die to form selected portions of the length of an extrusion or to form portions of the length of an extrusion composed of one polymer and other portions composed of the same polymer plus a second polymer. Tubing may be formed having portions of its length made completely of a flexible polymer and other portions thereof made of a rigid polymer. The apparatus mahy also form rigid pipe having elastomeric material coated or extruded along selected lengths thereof such that when severed along said lengths, selected pipes may be formed thereof containing end seals formed integral with each length.

  • Patent number: 4055881
Abstract: A method of rebuilding the eroded area of an ingot mold such as used in casting steel ingots places a metal producing exothermic compound in a cleaned eroded area of the ingot mold to be rebuilt, ignites the compound and confines the molten metal produced by the exothermic reaction to the eroded area where it forms a welded bond with the metal of the ingot mold and fills the eroded area. A protective metal coating of a suitable welding rod metal may be deposited by electric arc or flame welding on the metal patch formed of the exothermic material.

  • Patent number: 4055214
Abstract: A flash control molding is provided for use in association with a pattern for forming a casting cavity in a metal casting mold. The flash control molding includes an elongated strip of pliable material having a predetermined cross sectional configuration to define a thick portion for forming a flash control chamber in the mold, and a thin edge along one side of the thick portion to form a restricted opening between the flash control chamber and the casting cavity so that a casting subsequently produced in the mold is formed with controlled shaped flash which has a built-in fracture line immediately adjacent the casting proper, thereby making the flash easily and cleanly removable from the casting.

  • Patent number: 4055212
Abstract: A control system and method for controlling the oxygen content in continuously cast metal. The control system includes means for sensing the oxygen content of the molten metal at a first point upstream from the casting mold, either means for measuring the rate molten metal enters the casting mold or means for supplying molten metal to the casting mold at a constant rate, oxygen addition means for adding oxygen to the molten metal before it enters the casting mold, and control means for controlling the oxygen addition means in response to both the rate metal is supplied to the casting mold and the oxygen level of the molten metal at the first point. In the method of the invention, oxygen is added to the molten metal intermediate the first point and the casting mold in response to the oxygen content of molten metal at the first point and the rate molten metal enters the casting mold.

  • Patent number: 4055216
Abstract: A vacuum casting machine has a rotary table obtaining motion from a self-contained drive and accommodating chambers with casting molds. In turning, the rotary table causes each of the chambers to register in succession with an opening in a melting chamber through which metal is being poured. This arrangement of mold chambers enables partial overlapping in time of such processes as preparing a mold for pouring, the melting of charge and accumulating melt in the melting chamber in a requisite amount, and the cooling of each mold with the casting. This all considerably increases the production rate of the machine.

  • Patent number: 4054170
Abstract: An ingot mold of the bottle-top type and method for its use wherein the primary pipe or shrinkage cavity at the top of the ingot is decreased in length and a solid bridge is formed between the primary and secondary pipe cavities, sealing off the secondary cavity. The cast ingot is cropped in the area of the solid bridge between the primary and secondary pipe cavities, leaving the secondary cavity sealed such that it can be welded without oxidation during hot rolling to increase the ingot yield.

  • Patent number: 4054171
Abstract: A method and apparatus for of starting the continuous casting of a first metal in the mold of a continuous casting machine, in which a molten second metal having a melting point lower than that of the first metal is first introduced into the mold of the casting machine at a temperature substantially below the melting point of the first metal and in which the introduction of the second metal is discontinued and the casting of the first metal is begun after cooling of the mold has caused the second metal to form a solidified plug within the mold and while the cooling of the mold continues. The apparatus includes means for the sequential casting of the second and first metals in a casting machine while the casting machine is being cooled and the method allows metals of very high melting point, such as steel, to be continuously cast without damaging the mold or creating undue danger to the operator.

  • Patent number: 4053134
Abstract: Concrete pipe is molded between concentric steel cylindrical shells in which there are openings on each side receiving plastic inserts defining respective keyed cavities that remain in the molded concrete pipe after curing and removal of the concentric steel shells so that large keyed eye-bolts may be inserted in the respective keyed inserts. The initial positioning of the plastic mold keyed insert is accomplished by means of a keyed plastic plunger mounted on an attaching plate which includes notches on each side to fit over attaching screws on each side of the outside steel shell. The plunger has a keyed end. The hollow plastic insert with a soft gasket around the top has a keyed plunger inserted under pressure therein for removal therefrom and replacement by the eye-bolt after the curing of the pipe is completed.

  • Patent number: 4053271
Abstract: This invention relates to an improved seal for injection molding mechanism. The lower nozzle portion of a heater with the reciprocal valve pin extending centrally therethrough extends downwardly to the gate in the mold. The generally cylindrical seal is horizontally located in an outward upward flare of the air space between the lower nozzle portion and the mold. The seal has a V-shaped lower surface which provides inner and outer circumferential lips which prevent the pressurized melt from flowing upward past the seal. The outer wall of the seal extends across the flare of the air space with only a portion of the outer lip abutting on the mold, thus substantially reducing heat loss from the heater through the seal to the cooled mold.

  • Patent number: 4051886
Abstract: A method of making a number of foundry cores serially in which a foundry aggregate mixed with a curable binder is introduced into a core box cavity to form each green core which is gassed by passing into it a predetermined dose of a saturated vapor under pressure of a normally liquid curing agent for the binder and an inert carrier gas and then a purging gas is passed through the core to drive out unreacted curing agent. A ready supply of a saturated vapor of the curing agent is provided in a generating vessel. Once a body of the active liquid substance and overlying atmosphere of vapor is established in the generating vessel, the vapor is dispensed intermittently to the core box cavity in a series of bursts, one for each core gassed. Simultaneously with the dispensing of each burst, carrier gas is bubbled under pressure into a bottom zone of the vessel in minute bubbles so as to provide saturated vapor, replacing that dispensed.

  • Patent number: 4050503
Abstract: An apparatus for casting a molten material in which the mold is received in one chamber and the molten material is received in another chamber, the two chambers being subject to different pressures so that a tube connecting them can deliver the molten material from the second chamber to the first under a pressure differential. Signal-producing apparatus connected to the mold chambers produce signals representing the two pressures and the pressure differential, the signal-producing apparatus being connected to differentiating apparatus whose output produces time derivatives of the pressures and pressure differential. The time derivatives can be used to control the pressures via a comparator to which a reference value or set point signal is applied thereby varying the rate of filling of the mold in accordance with a predetermined program.
