  • Patent number: 4589184
Abstract: A method of mounting parts to both sides of a main body characterized by moving a carriage at a predetermined speed along a specified path of transport with the main body placed on the carriage; moving a pair of movable tables in synchronism with the carriage in the same direction as the movement thereof, the movable tables being disposed at opposite sides of the transport path and each carrying at least one robot and an assembling device; causing the movable tables to support the main body during the synchronized movement; setting a part held by the robot in a specified position on the main body; attaching the part to the main body by the assembling device; and thereafter delivering the main body from the movable tables onto the carriage. Since the carriage is moved during the assembly of parts, this method assures the assembly line of a high-speed operation.

  • Patent number: 4589176
Abstract: The present invention provides a method for constructing from fiber-composite material complex structures having two or more transversely disposed members. By way of example, a composite turbine blade 10 having an aerofoil 12 and an integrally formed footing 14 can be constructed using this new method, which method comprises the steps of forming from fiber-composite monotape a blank 40 in the general shape of aerofoil 12 with the fibers 18' of the monotape being oriented in a generally spanwise direction, exposing the fibers 18' at the root 42 of the aerofoil blank 40, inserting transversely between the exposed fibers 18' a plurality of foot-forming monotapes 17 to form a transversely meshed, tape and fiber structure 68, filling the voids in the transversely meshed structure with powdered matrix material and hot-pressing the filled-in structure 70 substantially according to the desired final shape of the fiber-composite turbine blade.

  • Patent number: 4589180
Abstract: To service an engine, it is frequently determined that a cylinder liner and piston must be replaced. Removal is difficult and time consuming if the piston is first removed through the liner and the liner is then grasped from below and pulled from the block. A method includes inserting a tool into a bore of the liner and expanding the tool into a frictional fit against the liner. A force is applied on the tool to forcibly move the liner. The piston and associated rings and rod are held in place in the liner by a partial vacuum for removal with the liner as a complete unit.

  • Patent number: 4587700
Abstract: A dual alloy cooled turbine is manufactured by casting a hollow cylinder of first nickel-base alloy material with high creep resistance to produce directionally oriented grain boundaries. A preform of a second nickel-base alloy material with high tensile strength and high low-cycle-fatigue strength is diffusion bonded into the bore of the hollow cylinder by subjecting the cylinder and preform to hot isostatic pressing. The resulting cylindrical block is cut into thin precisely flat wafers. A plurality of alignable holes for forming fluid cooling passages are photochemically etched into the individual wafers. The wafers then are laminated by vacuum diffusion bonding techniques, with the holes aligned to form fluid cooling passages. The resulting laminated block is machined to produce the turbine wheel with turbine blades through which the cooling passages extend.

  • Patent number: 4588552
Abstract: Manufacture of a workpiece from a creep-resistant nickel superalloy which is hardened by means of an oxide dispersion, by a powder-metallurgical process in which the mechanically alloyed powder is subjected to an isothermal or quasi-isothermal hot-rolling operation, in the course of which the powder particles are converted into a flake-shaped form with a pronounced longitudinal axes, and the rolled powder is introduced into a steel container and is compressed by isostatic hot-pressing. The workpiece is afterwards subjected to an annealing treatment which is designed to develop a coarse grain size. A preferred embodiment comprises the introduction of the powder into the mold or container in an oriented manner, in order to obtain a stratified packing of the powder, and an annealing treatment which is designed to develop a coarse grain size and is performed as a zone-annealing treatment.

  • Patent number: 4586226
Abstract: A method for forming small-orifices 20 in the face plate 10 of an injector 12, especially a liquid propellant injector for a rocket engine. A stainless steel base plate is given a first layer 28 of electrodeposited Ni and fuel feed passages 24 and 26, respectively, are formed therethrough for fuel and oxidizer transfer. The feed passages 24 and 36 are filled with wax and silver is worked into the surface of the wax to permit electrodeposition of face plate 10. Connecting bores 42 to the perforations are made through the face plate nickel layer 40. Plastic mandrels 44 are fabricated, having legs 46 with support sections 48 and orifice-forming sections 50 and coupling tabs 54 for tying the legs 46 together. The support legs 48 of the mandrels 44 are inserted in the connecting bores for support and another layer 60 of Ni is electrodeposited to enclose the orifice-forming sections 50 of the mandrel legs 46.

  • Patent number: 4586250
Abstract: Sleeves inserted in the coolant conductors of a steam generator of a nuclear-reactor plant are rolled by remotely controlled apparatus minimizing the time which personnel must spend within the radioactive environment of the channel head of the steam generator. A sleeve is rolled by a tube provided with rolls which are normally retracted and which, during a rolling operation, are extended into rolling engagement with the sleeve by a rotating tapered mandrel. The mandrel advances into the tube rotating the rolls while progressively increasing the pressure between the rolls and the sleeve. The sleeve is rolled near its upper end and also at its lower end in its region which is within the tube sheet by upper and lower rolling tools. The tube carrying the rolls is moved into the sleeve by a remotely controlled drive. The drive is a low voltage motor for the upper tool and a hydraulically driven piston for the lower tool.

  • Patent number: 4583278
Abstract: A guide for aligning pickets during the building of a picket fence includes a beam having a lower straightedge against which the tops of the pickets may be abutted during installation. The beam has a length approximately that of the typical distance between adjacent fence posts. The "picket end" of the beam is supported on the top of the last placed picket, with the beam face resting on the picket top, and front and rear legs at the picket end straddle the placed picket and the top rail and are spaced apart a distance equivalent to the thickness of the rail and picket to stabilize that end in the proper supported position. At the "rail end" of the beam, stabilizing legs are spaced apart a distance equivalent to the thickness of the rail; and a spacer block adjustably mounted between these legs rests on the top rail and establishes the rise of the beam at this rail end of the guide.

  • Patent number: 4583274
Abstract: An improved method of making an airfoil includes stacking plies in two groups. A separator ply is positioned between the two groups of plies. The groups of plies and the separator ply are interconnected to form an airfoil blank. The airfoil blank is shaped, by forging or other methods, to have a desired configuration. The material of the separator ply is then dissolved or otherwise removed from between the two sections of the airfoil blank to provide access to the interior of the airfoil blank. Material is removed from inner sides of the two separated sections to form core receiving cavities. After cores have been placed in the cavities, the two sections of the airfoil blank are interconnected and the shaping of the airfoil is completed. The cores are subsequently removed from the completed airfoil.

  • Patent number: 4583277
Abstract: A tool bit for facilitating the application of a cigar lighter socket to an apertured mounting plate in an automobile, comprising a driving member having a shank receivable in the chuck of a power tool, and a separate shouldered plug member carried by the driving member and having a portion receivable in the mouth of the cigar lighter socket for the purpose of rotatably driving the same. Threads at the rear of the socket are screwed into mating threads of a clamping shell which is usually hand-held at the rear of the panel. The driving member and plug member can rotate with respect to one another against the action of a spring-charged clutch or detent on the members. When the plug member is inserted into the socket mouth it becomes keyed to the socket and effects a rotation of the same as power is applied to the driving member. When the desired torque is reached, the clutch slips, thereby insuring against overtightening and possible damage to the parts.
