  • Patent number: 4672727
Abstract: In the fabrication of a hollow airfoil having a longitudinally extending slot in the airfoil wall with the slot outlet at the external surface of the airfoil, a metering passage extending from the coolant compartment within the airfoil to the slot for carrying a metered amount of coolant fluid into the slot is formed by machining a passage completely through the wall from the external surface to the internal surface and which intersects the slot. The portion of the passage between the slot and the external surface of the airfoil is blocked, such as with a plug or by welding. With this fabrication method metering passages for directing coolant fluid from inside the airfoil into the slot may be formed without access to the interior of the airfoil. Coolant fluid from the interior flows into the slot through the unblocked portion of the passage and thereupon flows out of the airfoil through the slot as a film of coolant over the surface of the airfoil.

  • Patent number: 4669170
Abstract: This invention is an improved concept of the clamp shown in U.S. Pat. No. 3,736,629, as issued June 5, 1973. This construction of a clampingdevice includes forming two C-shaped arms, each of which is an assembly of two plate-like members of sheet metal. These two arm assemblies are pivotally retained at one end with the plate-like members in an overlay condition. A pivot pin has an enlarged center portion which acts as a spacer and has two eccentric cam areas sized and spaced to actuate apertures formed in one of the arm pairs. Shouldered rivets retain these arm assemblies in spaced array and a stop pin secured in this pivot pin has a length sufficient to engage a secured rivet. At one limit of movement of the stop pin, the cam areas move one arm assembly to a maximum clamping force and, at the other limit of movement of the stop pin, the cam areas are in a reduced-force application.

  • Patent number: 4663811
Abstract: This invention relates to an improved method of making nozzles for injection molding. The nozzles are heated by an electrical heating element which is cast in a copper portion between inner and outer stainless steel portions. The method includes making a main rear portion and a steel nose cap portion separately, brazing them together in a vacuum furnace to form an integral unit, and then finishing it by drilling and machining to provide it with a central bore and a particular gating configuration. This method has the advantage that a single inventory of unfinished nozzles can be maintained, from which a requirement for one of several gating configurations can be quickly supplied by finishing the nozzles according to that configuration.

  • Patent number: 4662048
Abstract: The method of making a sewer pipe testing apparatus which uses a frangible plug to be installed within the sewage pipe system. The plug is formed by tightly compacting between a pair of mold members a quantity of a powdered substance within a section of a cylinder. The resultingly formed plug is mounted within an annular groove within the cylinder. A movable member is mounted through the side wall of the cylinder and is capable of being moved in contact with the solid plug to cause such to break apart. The solid plug is to be coated on its exterior surfaces by a plastic material which retards dissolving of the plug by water, but which material is ultimately dissolvable within water.
