  • Patent number: 4603460
Abstract: A method of manufacturing a heat exchanger in which a laminate prepared by laminating many sheets one upon another so that the neighboring sheets may be formed with bonded portions and non-bonded portions, is expanded in such a direction that the respective sheets are spaced from each other so as to form flow channels or passages between the sheets at the non-bonded portions, and which employs the steps of printing patterns of bonded material onto the sheets, laminating the sheets, and subsequently expanding the laminate of the sheets to form the heat exchanger.

  • Patent number: 4602413
Abstract: An electromagnetic fuel injection valve and a process for the adjustment of the armature stroke (H) of the fuel injection valve is proposed, which serves to inject fuel under low pressure into the suction pipe of an internal combustion engine. The fuel injection valve surrounds an armature guided in a valve housing. This armature is tightly fastened to a movable valve section which cooperates with a fixed valve seat in a nozzle body supported in a nozzle carrier. The armature stroke can be adjusted in an assembled condition of the fuel injection valve by moving the nozzle body in an axial direction. For this the stroke (H.sub.eff) is measured by an odometrical system (distance sensing system) in the assembled condition of the fuel injection valve while the electromagnetic system is excited and the fixed valve seat provided on the nozzle body is displaced with the aid of a pressing tool by the difference between the measured stroke (H.sub.eff) and the desired armature stroke (H).

  • Patent number: 4599772
Abstract: The reinforcement of the crown of a piston of aluminum or aluminum alloy for an internal combustion engine comprises the preparation of a reinforcement member (10, 13) which is provided with apertures (11, 14), or reentrants. The reinforcement member is placed in a crown-forming part (18) of a piston die in a squeeze casting apparatus and the piston is squeeze cast. The molten metal penetrates the apertures, or enters the reentrants, and these are so shaped that when the molten metal has solidified, keys are formed which connect securely the reinforcement member to the aluminum or aluminum alloy. Further reinforcement members can then be readily brazed or welded to the first reinforcement member.

  • Patent number: 4599781
Abstract: Thin metal parts such as one eighth inch or less cast iron or one quarter inch or less cast aluminum are repaired by drilling a series of overlapping holes extending generally perpendicular to the crack at each end of the crack and at spaced locations along the crack. A lock of the general outline of the series of overlapping holes is fixedly secured in each of the series of overlapping holes. At least one hole having a diameter no greater than 0.200 inches is drilled in the crack between the locks so that the hole overlaps a portion of one of the locks. The hole is tapped with a tap having at least 27 threads per inch and a plug having the same number of threads per inch as the tapped hole is secured in the tapped hole thereby pre-stressing the locks and filling the gap of the crack. The plug is torqued until the torquing force exceeds the strength of the plug thereby snapping off a portion of the plug which extends beyond the surface of the part.

  • Patent number: 4598456
Abstract: A system for automatically inserting the leads of electrical components into circuit boards is disclosed. In the preferred embodiment, an electrical component is acquired by the robot. The leads of the component have been trimmed and preformed such that they are substantially parallel with respect to each other with the leads differing in length. The robot positions the component at a fixed location relative to the axis of the robot and within the view of an optical sensor such as a TV camera. The sensor determines the location of each of the leads relative to a fixed location. A first rotary motion rotates the component about a selected axis of the robot through a predetermined angle and a second measurement is made. A second rotation positions the component 180.degree. from the original position and a third measurement is made.

  • Patent number: 4594761
Abstract: A hollow composite airfoil with an integral internal support rib of fluoroelastomer rubber is formed by bracketing the rib between two silicone rubber mandrels to form a core assembly having a desired aerodynamic shape, then building up on opposite sides of the core assembly separate stacks of laminae of a composite material of graphite (or carbon) and glass fibers impregnated with an epoxy resin, with the two stacks overlapping adjacent to the leading and trailing edges of the core assembly. Heat and pressure are then applied to the core assembly with the laminae thereon to bond together the laminae of each stack, then to bond the two stacks together along the overlapping portions thereof and to bond the two stacks to the rib to form a continuous shell around the core assembly. The mandrels are then removed. One open end of the resulting hollow airfoil is plugged and that end is inserted into a recess in a mounting platform with a predetermined clearance space therebetween.

  • Patent number: 4594760
Abstract: Prepackaging the various components of an engine cylinder assembly as an exchange or overhaul kit is useful in servicing or overhauling a single cylinder of a multiple cylinder engine. The heretofore known devices for holding the components of the engine cylinder assembly together were primarily used with small engines where the weight of the components was sufficiently low so as to not cause any handling difficulties. The subject apparatus includes a pair of brackets which positively grippingly engage the flange of the cylinder liner and a lifting element which is releasably attached to the piston with bolts threaded into threaded holes in the piston such that a portion of the brackets is sandwiched between the lifting element and the piston. The apparatus is positively engaged with the components of the engine cylinder assembly and positively maintains the components in fixed relationship with one another.

  • Patent number: 4593445
Abstract: An apparatus and a method for remotely refurbishing valve seats are disclosed herein. The apparatus generally comprises a welding assembly having a welding head for depositing a bead of metal around the valve seat, and a positioning assembly detachably mountable onto the valve body for angularly and radially moving the welding head around the valve seat at a selected point along the axis of rotation of the seat. Additionally, the apparatus includes a control means operatively connected to the positioning assembly for controlling the movement of the welding head around the valve seat. In operation, the control means, which may include a microprocessor, first angularly moves the welding head 360.degree. around the circumference of the valve seat, then moves the welding head to a different point along the axis of rotation of the valve seat, and then rotates the welding head 360.degree. around the valve seat again for as many cycles as is necessary to rebuild the valve seat.
