  • Patent number: 5257555
Abstract: A hand-held thermal wire stripper has two arms arranged in a pincer-like configuration, whereby the arms diverge at one end and converge at the other end. The divergent ends of the arms are exposed and a heatable blade is positioned on each divergent end such that the two blades oppose each other across a gap that receives a wire to be stripped. The convergent ends of the arms are housed in a casing that is gripped by the operator of the wire stripper. The casing is formed from an electrostatically dissipative material that conducts electrostatic charges to ground before such charges reach a level sufficient to shock the operator or damage sensitive electrical components coming into contact therewith.

  • Patent number: 5257566
Abstract: An opener accessory for opening containers designed with flip-top opening mechanisms. The accessory is formed in the shape of a finger band having a pry end extending from the finger band for urging a pull-tab member of a flip-top opening mechanism. The opener accessory is preferably produced from a flat, thin, narrow, one-piece construction metallic structure formed having a pry end at one end and a finger band end at the other end. The finger band is formed as a rounded portion and a straight portion for encircling a user's finger, such as a thumb. The straight portion extends across the rounded portion and terminates at the finger band end. The pry end is formed as an integral extension of the finger band's rounded portion and is preferably machined stamped and chamfered for facilitating snagging a pull-tab member of the flip-top opening mechanism. In certain respects the accessory's pry end resembles a fingertip and fingernail, but accomplishes the same function without the normal prying discomfort.

  • Patent number: 5253553
Abstract: A stopper remover comprises a relatively thin elongate member, having greater length than width, with a flared portion at an end thereof. In performing the method according to the invention, a stopper is removed from a bottle by curling the elongate member around the longitudinal axis thereof, inserting the flared end a sufficient distance into the neck of the bottle to capture the stopper in the flared portion, and extracting the remover from the bottle thereby removing the stopper. The remover is also advantageously employed in simply bringing the stopper back up into the neck of the bottle, enabling ultimate extraction of the stopper by conventional means.

  • Patent number: 5253551
Abstract: An ultracentrifuge with a snap can and a tool for removing or installing the snap cap. The tool also is formed for installing and removing screw caps from centrifuge tubes, test tubes or the like. The ultracentrifuge tube has a balanced positive securement structure with a support collar that supports the tube independently of the cap securement structure. The tool has manually grippable, elongated body constructed of a semi-rigid material, and one end of the tool body includes a slot and a tab protruding from the tool end directly above the slot. The tool tab is formed to engage the top of the snap cap when a pry lip of the snap cap is inserted into the slot. The user can swing the tool up to unsnap the cap from the tube. The opposite end of the tool includes an open ended socket dimensioned and tapered to grippably receive the outer circumferential perimeter of a screw cap for a centrifuge tube thereby facilitating easy removal or installation.

  • Patent number: 5247861
Abstract: A method of producing laminated plastic tooling suitable for use in forming sheet material by techniques such as stretch forming, hydroforming, etc. The detailed overall method comprises the steps of designing the desired tool configuration (typically by computer-aided design), machining a suitable tool baseplate, cutting plastic boardstock into suitably sized boards, trial stacking the boards to the general tool configuration, determine that stack has the correct dimensions, unstacking and cleaning the board surfaces, restacking with an adhesive between all abutting boards with clamping as necessary, curing the adhesive, machining the stack to the required configuration under numerical control, sand the shaped tool to the desired surface smoothness, check the tool with a coordinate measuring machine and coat the tool with any desired surface coating, such as an anti-chafe coating. The resulting tool is highly accurate and is capable of long-term production use.

  • Patent number: 5247923
Abstract: A method of forming a substantially hemispherically shaped diamond cutting element for use in a rotary drill bit is provided. A natural diamond is obtained and then cleaved to form a planar surface. A portion of the diamond is trimmed in the shape of a first truncated cone by directing a laser toward the planar surface from a predetermined angle and rotating the diamond in a circle about the central axis. The excess diamond produced by the trimming step is removed by directing the laser toward the diamond, from a direction substantially parallel to the planar surface, and rotating the diamond in a circle about the central axis. Then, a second truncated cone is created by directing a laser toward a lower portion of the first truncated cone from a predetermined angle and rotating the diamond in a circle about the central axis. If desired, the trimming and removing steps are alternately repeated, and the predetermined angle of the laser is successively adjusted.

  • Patent number: 5245721
Abstract: A combination tool comprising multiple tool functions having swingable handles with shoulders formed integrally with the handles for alternately engaging two connected pairs of jaw elements. The jaw elements are biased open to a specific angular relation. Swinging the handles to engage a first pair of jaws allows the other pair of jaws to be used. Retaining means allow the jaw elements to be clamped closed against the force of the biasing means and held against one of the handles. This allows a tool included in the other handle to be more conveniently used and secures the jaws for storage of the tool. In one embodiment, the jaws comprise standard plier jaws, long nose plier jaws, a pipe grip, wire cutter, wire crimpers, and wire strippers and one handle includes a socket driver and scale and the other handle includes a storage compartment.

  • Patent number: 5243788
Abstract: In a method and an apparatus for balancing a grinding wheel, balancing weights on the grinding wheel remain secured to the grinding wheel in an unbalance measuring operation, and the positions at which the balancing weights are secured to the grinding wheel are stored. In a repositioning operation for compensating for measured unbalance of the grinding wheel, the influences of the forces of the balancing weights during the unbalance measuring operation are derived from the stored positions of the weights and compensated for so as to balance the ginding wheel.
