Abstract: The present invention provides an acrylate superabsorbent composition having an improved rate of absorbency, low residual acid content, and a low acrylate monomer content. Acrylic acid, an alkali metal salt of carbonic acid, aluminum acetate, sodium sulfate and water are uniformly reacted preferably using microwave radiation as the heat source.
Abstract: A method for the synthesis of polyarylene polyether (PAPE) oligomers with pendant vinyl groups is presented. Aromatic polyether sulfone (APS) and poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) backbones are used for specific examples. Terminal vinyl groups may also be provided on the APS by forming the .alpha., .omega.-di(benzyl)APS before the first step of a synthesis to form a pendant groups which step involves the chloromethylation of APS and PPO to provide oligomers with chloromethyl groups. PPO containing bromomethyl groups was obtained by radical bromination of the PPO methyl groups. Both chloromethylated and bromomethylated starting materials are converted to their phosphonium salts, and then subjected to a phase transfer catalyzed Wittig reaction to provide the pendant vinyl groups. An APS containing pendant ethynyl groups is prepared by bromination of the APS with pendant vinyl groups, followed by a phase transfer catalyzed dehydrobromination.
Abstract: A makeup remover pad is provided which comprises a resilient, open-celled hydrophilic foam matrix, wherein said matrix integrally incorporates an aqueous phase incorporating about 25-75% water, about 15-70% of a water-insoluble emollient oil, and an amount of surfactant effective to stabilize the aqueous phase so that it is released from the foam matrix as a homogeneous emulsion when the pad is applied to skin.
Abstract: An aqueous, resinous solution of a curable, polymeric reaction product, the cured polymeric flame resistant coating and methods for producing them are provided. The solution is formed by direct reaction or prepolymer reaction and chain extension reaction of a methylol and/or hydroxyl-containing quaternary phosphonium compound, divalent nitrogen-containing compound and a heteroatom-containing compound. A nitrogen-containing compound has at least 2 active hydrogen and/or methylol radicals. The direct or prepolymer reaction has present a tertiary amine.
Abstract: Pharmaceutical compositions which are suitable for topical application in the treatment of bacterial and/or fungal infections are described. The compositions comprise a synergistic mixture of a silver compound and an azole derivative together with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier therefor. The compositions may be applied topically in the treatment of burns ulcers and other skin lesions, general skin infections and also in the treatment of infections of the mucous membranes. Preferred compositions contain silver sulphadiazine and clotrimazole or metronidazole. The compositions may be applied as ointments, gels, pessaries, tablets and the like.

Abstract: This invention relates to a process for the preparation of hydrophilic membranes by coagulation of a solution of at least one hydrophobic polymer and at least one hydrophilic polymer in a suitable solvent medium in a coagulation medium. The process according to the invention is characterized in that hydrophilic microfiltration and/or ultrafiltration membranes are prepared by cross-linking the hydrophilic polymer which is present in or on the obtained membrane matrix after the coagulation in an essentially non-swollen state and fixing same as such in or on the polymer matrix. Advantageously the solvents and the undesirable components of the coagulation medium are removed whereby the hydrophilic polymer is converted into an essentially non-swollen state prior to cross-linking. The removal of the undesirable components from the membrane takes place by means of a non-solvent for the hydrophilic polymer according to the invention.
