Abstract: Foamed products are prepared by subjecting a crosslinked polymer such as an ethylene-carbon monoxide copolymer susceptible to heating by high frequency electromagnetic radiation such as microwave or radio frequency which has been imbibed or impregnated with a suitable mechanical or physical blowing agent such as a halogenated hydrocarbon to sufficient high frequency electromagnetic radiation to cause foaming of the polymer.
Abstract: Disclosed is new type of implantable material for replacement of cartilaginous or fibrous tissue. The material has controlled porosity and is biocompatible. A method for making this material is also disclosed.
Abstract: There are provided new elastomeric copolymers of about 15 to 45 mol %, preferably about 25 to 35 mol % trioxane, about 55 to 85 mol %, preferably about 65 to 75 mol % of 1,3-dioxolane, said mol percents based on the total of trioxane and 1,3-dioxolane, and about 0.005 to 0.15 wt. %, preferably about 0.05 to 0.12 wt. % of 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether or butadiene diepoxide as a bifunctional monomer, based on the total weight of copolymer. The elastomeric copolymers may be prepared by mixing said monomers in a substantially dry state and under an inert atmosphere with a cationic polymerization catalyst, e.g, p-nitrobenzenediazonium tetrafluoroborate. The elastomeric copolymers have a strong interaction with moldable, crystalline acetal polymers comprising at least 85 mol % of polymerized oxymethylene units and may be used as a blending agent with such crystalline acetal polymers or as a bonding agent to improve the adhesiveness of the crystalline acetal polymer to other materials.

Abstract: The present invention are highly reproducible poly(propylene glycol fumarate) compositions having a controlled end group ratio and range of molecular weights with minimal low molecular weight and excessively high molecular weight fractions, and methods for their manufacture. These compositions, having a preferred weight average molecular weight (Mw) of between about 500 and 3000 and a number average molecular weight (Mn) of between about 300 and 2000, are especially useful in biomedical applications such as in bone cements and tissue implants or glues.
Abstract: Thermotropic copolyazomethines having a mesophase temperature range lying within a desired range of values are obtained by copolymerizing terephthalic aldehyde with at least two different 1,n-bis(4-aminophenoxy)alkanes.Such copolyazomethines are particularly useful as reinforcing materials for the usual thermoplastic polymers, such as polycarbonate, polybutyleneterephthalate, polyethyleneterephthalate and polyamides.
Abstract: Hydrophilic polymeric soft contact lenses which are characterized by their biocompatibility and resistance to nonspecific protein adsorption. At least 75%, preferably at least 80%, of the prepolymers from which the lenses are prepared are isocyanate-capped oxyethylene-based diols or polyols having molecular weight of about 7000-30,000. Essentially all of the hydroxyl groups of the diols or polyols are capped with polyisocyanate prior to formation of the hydrated polymer of which the contact lenses are made.

Abstract: Condensation copolymers such as polyesters are rendered photodegradable, by subjecting them to conditions under which they undergo ester interchange effectively causing polymer chain scission, in the presence of a keto carbonyl containing compound having chemical groups reactive with the condensation polymer products formed by the ester interchange. The compound reacts chemically with the polymer products to reform the high molecular weight condensation copolymer, but with the keto carbonyl groups chemically linked into the polymer chains to confer photodegradability thereon.

Abstract: A novel class of polymers and processes used in their preparation are described. The polymers are produced by a reaction between polyfunctional amines and quinones. Some are infusible and intractable. Others are eminently suitable for the production of coatings, adhesives, insulators, etc. Some polymers, in solution in appropriate solvents adhere to metals, siliceous materials, composites with sufficient affinity to displace water. The polymers can be cured by heat or chemicals to an impervious and insoluble material that is not wetted by water.

Abstract: Disclosed is a novel class of linear segmented non-elastomeric thermoplastic polyesteramides. The polymers are easily obtained by reacting a carboxylic acid-terminated prepolymer (derived by reacting at least a two-molar proportion of a dicarboxylic acid with a polymeric diol of molecular weight 400 to 6000), a dicarboxylic acid, and a diisocyanate. The polymers so obtained have nylon-like properties, particularly nylon 11 or 12, but are characterized by superior high temperature properties therefrom. At the same time, they have excellent toughness and very low water absorption characteristics.
