Patent number: 7933267Abstract: Principles of the invention are described for providing multicast virtual private networks (MVPNs) across a public network that are capable of carrying high-bandwidth multicast traffic with increased scalability. In particular, the MVPNs may transport layer three (L3) multicast traffic, such as Internet Protocol (IP) packets, between remote sites via the public network. The principles described herein may reduce the overhead of protocol independent multicast (PIM) neighbor adjacencies and customer control information maintained for MVPNs. The principles may also reduce the state and the overhead of maintaining the state in the network by removing the need to maintain at least one dedicated multicast tree per each MVPN.Type: GrantFiled: August 26, 2005Date of Patent: April 26, 2011Assignee: Juniper Networks, Inc.Inventors: Rahul Aggarwal, Yakov Rekhter

Patent number: 7929551Abstract: A network bridge connects a host device, such as digital media player, cell phone or camera, to content sources over a network to permit the host device to transmit or receive digital media. The network bridge includes a network interface module that identifies at least one media source as well as digital media available on the network. A host device interface module receives, from the host device, file system requests in accordance with a protocol, such as a mass storage protocol. In response to the request, a host device protocol interface module on the network bridge translates the file system request to a request for digital media. The network interface module acquires digital media from the media source, and the host device interface module transfers the digital media to the host device in accordance with the interface protocol. The network bridge may connect to one or more services that provide content to the host device. For example, the services may be accessible over the Internet.Type: GrantFiled: June 1, 2006Date of Patent: April 19, 2011Assignee: Rovi Solutions CorporationInventors: Bradley Dietrich, Daniel Putterman, Gregory Peters

Patent number: 7860015Abstract: A SAN connectivity advisor analyzes the physical connections of a physical fabric, identifies logical connections based on the physical connections and connectivity information, and applies a set of connectivity rules indicative of good or mandatory SAN connection practices. The connectivity advisor generates a report indicative of connections that may need or benefit from modification, typically an error message for each suspect connection found. The connectivity advisor applies the rules to each physical and logical connection to qualify the connection according to the rules, thus reflecting the actual configuration at the port-to-port connection level, rather than the conventional device-to-device level. Further, the connectivity advisor does not require an interoperability matrix or other database query of device interoperability.Type: GrantFiled: December 18, 2006Date of Patent: December 28, 2010Assignee: EMC CorporationInventors: John D. Method and apparatus providing rapid end-to-end failover in a packet switched communications network
Patent number: 7813263Abstract: A hardware-based failover scheme enabling rapid end-to-end recovery is provided. Hardware logic periodically generates, transmits, receives, and processes heartbeat packets, sent from one end of the communications network to another, and then returned back. If a communications network node or communications link failure is being experienced along the transport path, then the hardware logic rapidly swaps the affected traffic conveyed to a pre-established backup transport path, typically within microseconds. Advantages are derived from the rapid failover effected end-to-end which enables continued delivery of provisioned communications services improving the resiliency and/or availability of a communications network.Type: GrantFiled: July 30, 2004Date of Patent: October 12, 2010Assignee: Conexant Systems, Inc.Inventors: Rong-Feng Chang, Eric Lin, Craig Barrack -
Patent number: 7720031Abstract: The present invention relates to methods and devices that support mobility of a client across a campus, particularly mobility across VLANs and subnets, while preserving the client's assigned IP address. Both layer 2 and layer 3 packets are supported. Mobility support most clearly applies to wireless clients, but could apply to other kinds of mobile connections, even to wired connections. A smart server is adapted to support multiple VLANs and to modify and redirect packets in sessions with a client that moves from one VLAN to another, preserving the client's assigned IP address. Two or more smart servers, in cooperation with a smart manger, modify packets and tunnel them between smart servers when a client that moves from one VLAN to another and from one smart server to another, again preserving the client's assigned IP address.Type: GrantFiled: October 15, 2004Date of Patent: May 18, 2010Assignee: Cisco Technology, Inc.Inventors: Wen-Chun Cheng, Po-Cheng Wang, Rajesh Nair
