  • Patent number: 5228631
Abstract: A continuous filament (40) from a supply spool (50) is wound onto a takeup spool (52) in an amount to form one flat coil (54). A first winding device (42) forms a first flat coil (54) in winding space (36) between guides (28 and 30) while simultaneously a second winding device (44) winds a second flat coil in winding space (38) between guides (30 and 32) from the filament on the takeup spool (52). On completion of the flat coil winding, the guide (32), second winding device (44) and takeup spool (52) are removed from the shaft assembly (34), adhesive is applied to the newly formed flat coils and the coils along with guides (28,30) are moved onto spindle (90) and against a flange (92). The guides (28,30) are removed from the shaft assembly (34) adjacent the newly wound coils stored against the flange (92) and remounted next to the winding device (42).

  • Patent number: 5228634
Abstract: A novel roll loading mechanism is described which mechanically lifts a roll of web material into an operative position at the roll mounting of the printing press. This is accomplished by use of a dual chain conveyor having supports cantilevered from the chain, and synchronized to lift both ends of the core simultaneously to the printing press mount. This chain drive and the supports are selectively driven in a forward direction to lift the roll, and reversed to lower the roll to the initial pick-up position. A common drive shaft with sprockets to engage the chains is used to provide simultaneous and synchronized drive to the dual chain conveyors. A triangular configuration of the conveyor chain is used which presents an acute angle having its vertex above the press mount to assure secure position of the roll.

  • Patent number: 5224662
Abstract: In a winding drum for a chain strand, which is mounted in a support frame by means of a mounting support device so as to be rotatable relative to the latter and which has a central winding shaft, lateral butting rings and on either side a central receptacle for the support device, the latter comprises a shaped plug, which can be non-positively brought into plug connection with the receptacle and with which, in its plugged-in position on rotating the winding drum, with respect thereto, in frictionally resistant manner, a brake torque can be applied to the drum. The plug has a shaped portion projecting axially over the butting ring towards the support frame and also has a non-rotationally symmetrical outer profile for the non-rotary mounting in the support frame.

  • Patent number: 5222676
Abstract: A yarn build is applied to at a constant traverse length up to a limit diameter D. In order to achieve a uniform yarn draw-off tension, even with packages of large mass and correspondingly large diameter, the traverse length is thereafter reduced as the diameter increases. In the case of a conically shaped tube, the conicity of the build is also reduced which leads to improved exploitation of volume and greater package mass for a given package radius.

  • Patent number: 5219125
Abstract: A yarn transfer arrangement in a yarn winding machine comprises two part-circular guide plates which , when an empty tube has moved to the winding position, move from a non-operating position, spaced apart on opposed sides of the winding position of the machine by a distance greater than the diameter of a full package, to an operating position in which the plates surround the empty tube apart from an entry aperture and an exit aperture allowing yarn travel to and from the empty tube. One guide plate causes the yarn to have sufficient wrap around the empty tube that, on operation of a cutter disposed on the other guide plate adjacent the exit aperture, the cut yarn end is entrained around the empty tube between it and the other guide plate, and winding of a package on the empty tube is thereby initiated. The guide plates are then moved back to the non-operating position.

  • Patent number: 5217175
Abstract: A yarn winding spindle is disclosed which is characterized by the ability to grip the interior of a tubular bobbin during the winding of the yarn thereon and then release the bobbin to facilitate doffing. The spindle comprises a cylindrical support member which is composed of a plurality of axially spaced apart annular entrainment members and a plurality of annular, elastic clamping members mounted between adjacent entrainment members. The elastic members are configured and internally self-biased so as to assume a radially extended position to engage the bobbin in the absence of an external force being applied thereto, and to assume a radially retracted position to release the bobbin upon a biasing force being applied thereto.

  • Patent number: 5213275
Abstract: An improved mandrel for use in filament winding. Two embodiments are described for a new filament winding mandrel concept. The first embodiment comprises a plurality of spaced apart slots machined at an angle along the ends of the central mandrel section for use with machines of at least three degrees of motion. A second embodiment comprises a series of two circumferential rows of axial fins protruding along the circumference of the central section of the mandrel for use with machines having only two degrees of motion. A second configuration of the second embodiment is an addition of a strip of slots that are simply placed around and secured to the circumference of the mandrel at locations where fiber turn around is desired. This provides for fiber securing in place with minimal rather than requiring machining the axial fins into the tool.

  • Patent number: 5211349
Abstract: An elastomeric sleeve adapted to be mounted on a reel for winding strip into coil form has metal inserts adjacent a gripper slot opening for preventing flat spots in the coil. The sleeve is designed to permit sufficient expansion when the reel is expanded so that the gripper opening is not pulled apart and a widened gap is not formed therebetween. Preferably, slits are provided on the inner periphery of the sleeve for this purpose. Alternatively, a collar can be mounted on the outboard end of the segment bridging the gripper opening for enhanced structural rigidity to prevent the sleeve from pulling apart the gripper opening upon expansion of the reel.

  • Patent number: 5211347
Abstract: A thread feed device having a storage body to which the thread is fed at one end in circumferential direction, and from which the thread is drawn off in axial direction (overhead), and with which there is associated a scanning device. A signal of the scanning device controls the thread winding speed. A swing arm bears a sensor part of the scanning device, said sensor part cooperating without contact with a stationary sensor part. In all positions of the swing arm, signals received from the stationary sensor part, starting from the depositing of the first thread turns on the swing arm, controls a reduction in the thread-winding speed, which speed decreases to a minimum value in a manner, corresponding to the increasing coverage of the length of the swing arm by turns of thread.

  • Patent number: 5211346
Abstract: An automatic strand winding unit having a plurality of stations each comprising a strand supply such as glass roving, guide/traverse means, a horizontally positioned spindle for taking up strand material and automation for servicing the winding unit is described. The winding unit, including the automation, is programmed whereby, inter alia, the automation moves into a station having a full spindle, cuts the strand between the strand supply and the horizontally positioned full spindle and, while retaining the strand end from the strand supply, doffs the full spindle by pivoting the spindle to a substantially vertical or down position, and thereafter engages the strand end with a horizontally positioned empty spindle and restarts the winding operation. In a preferred embodiment the automatic winding unit is for winding glass roving using an improved coreless, expandable spindle having an automatic strand engaging and releasing mechanism.
