  • Patent number: 7031394
Abstract: A method for conveying over telephone lines digitized voice signals simultaneously with digital data signals by means of a communication system, having a transmitter having a discrete multi-tone unit yielding a plurality of carriers of different frequency, several of which are assigned to the voice signals and others to the data signals. The carriers for transmitting voice are selected on the basis of their signal-to-noise ratio characteristics, which carriers can be reallocated dynamically to data transmission. A first tone ordering circuit assigns data streams to data carriers, and a second tone ordering circuit assigns voice streams to voice carriers. Each carrier is modulated by QAM modulation, the data carriers by a sequence of QAM symbols representing data and the voice carriers by a sequence of QAM symbols representing voice. QAM modulation is carried out by a first constellation encoder that modulates the data carriers and a second constellation encoder that modulates the voice carriers.

  • Patent number: 7031379
Abstract: A method for deriving coefficients for a time domain equalizer function (24) as implemented by a digital signal processor (35) in a DSL modem (20) is disclosed. A transmitting modem (10), such as at a central office, issues a pseudo-random training sequence that is received by the receiving modem (20). Correlation matrices are derived by the digital signal processor (35), from which sets of eigenvalues and eigenvectors are derived. A flatness constraint on the frequency response of the time domain equalizer is established, and included with a flatness scaling factor (?) into a minimization cost function. One or more values of the flatness scaling factor (?), preferably between minimum and maximum eigenvalues, are evaluated in the cost function, to derive the optimum filter for the time-domain equalizer. The flatness constraint ensures that the time-domain equalizer is not subject to near null conditions and large variations in its frequency response.

  • Patent number: 7031405
Abstract: Carrier phase recovery employs a single-axis blind cost criterion from the Bussgang class of functions, and its stochastic gradient, to generate a carrier phase error used to adjust a received and demodulated signal to near baseband. For one implementation, the estimate is derived in accordance with a Single-Axis Constant Modulus (SA-CM) criterion and its stochastic gradient via a SA-CM algorithm (SA-CMA). The carrier phase error is then used to adjust the carrier frequency and phase of the received and demodulated signal toward the frequency and phase of the carrier used to modulate the transmitted symbols, driving the carrier phase error to zero. The values used for the phase recovery may be either i) an IIR filtered signal, ii) a processed signal (e.g., decisions for the signal symbols), or iii) an equalized and processed signal.

  • Patent number: 7031413
Abstract: BB input units input baseband received signals. An initial weight data setting unit sets weighting coefficients to be utilized in the interval of a training signal as initial weighting coefficients. A gap compensating unit compensates control weighting coefficients with a gap error signal and outputs the updated weighting coefficients acquired as a result of the compensation. A weight switching unit selects the initial weighting coefficients in the interval of the training signal and selects the updated weighting coefficients in the interval of the data signal. Then the weight switching unit outputs the selected initial weighting coefficients and updated weighting coefficients as the weighting coefficients. A synthesizing unit weights the baseband received signals with the weighting coefficients and then sums them up.

  • Patent number: 7031414
Abstract: A method and apparatus for mitigating for inter-symbol interference in a communication system using a multi-rate adaptive decision feedback equalizer (DFE) with a feedforward filter which is a combination of a first feedforward filter (FF1) that performs match filtering and a second feedforward filter (FF2) which runs at a lower sampling rate than first feedforward filter (FF1), thereby, reducing the total the number of computation done at the receiver, and removes ISI and white noise. The present invention also employs a method and apparatus where the initial training is done separately for the first feedforward filter (FF1) and the second feedforward filter (FF2). An approximate solution of the optimal receiver has the first feedforward filter (FF1) maximize the output signal to noise ratio (SNR) which is used to train first feedforward filter (FF1).

  • Patent number: 7031383
Abstract: A compensation circuit for reducing intersymbol interference (ISI) products within an electrical data signal corresponding to a detected data signal received via a signal transmission medium provides for selective application of compensation to individual, discrete data signal components. According to one embodiment, one circuit branch processes the electrical data signal to substantially remove one distinct signal component representing an ISI product of some portion of the data symbol sequence. A second circuit branch approximately duplicates an ISI product of another portion of the data symbol sequence for removal by subtraction within a signal combiner from the compensated signal provided by the first circuit branch. A third circuit branch approximately duplicates an ISI product of still another portion of the data symbol sequence also for removal by subtraction within the signal combiner from the compensated signal provided by the first circuit branch.

  • Patent number: 7027505
Abstract: A system and method for improving radio communication of frequency or phase modulated transmission and reception. Signal transmission is implemented by suppression of the upper and lower sidebands of a narrowband or very narrowband FM/PM signal from the transmission medium such that transmission is limited to the instantaneous frequency varied about the carrier frequency (center frequency). Suppression may be achieved by adding a bandpass filter between the modulator and the power amplifier of the narrowband FM transmitter. Upon receipt of the suppressed sideband signal, the received signal is converted to a first narrowband IF signal, and then the narrowband or very narrowband frequency deviation IF signal is expanded by frequency multiplication to generate a second wideband or very wideband IF signal. A discriminator may be used to convert the frequency-multiplied signal into a low frequency signal or audio signal for further processing.

  • Patent number: 7027489
Abstract: Data is to be estimated from a received plurality of data signals in a code division multiple access communication system. The data signals are transmitted in a shared spectrum at substantially a same time. A combined signal of the transmitted data signals are received over the shared spectrum and sampled. A channel response for the transmitted data signals is estimated. Data of the data signals is estimated using the samples and the estimated channel response. The data estimation uses a Fourier Transform based data estimating approach. An error in the data estimation introduced from a circulant approximation used in the Fourier Transform based approach is iteratively reduced.

  • Patent number: 7027538
Abstract: A method and system for performing joint equalization and decoding of Complementary Code Key (CCK) encoded symbols. The system comprises: a decision feedback equalizer (DFE) structure for simulating an inverse communications channel response and providing an output comprising an estimation of the received symbols, the DFE structure including a forward equalizer path and a feedback equalizer path including a feedback filter; and, a CCK decoder embedded in the feedback path and operating in conjunction with a feedback filter therein for decoding the chips based on intermediate DFE outputs including those chips corresponding to past decoded CCK symbols. Decisions on a symbol chip at a particular time are not made until an entire CCK codeword that the chip belongs to is decoded, thereby reducing errors propagated when decoding the symbols. Advantageously, the trellis decoding method is implemented as a computationally efficient 64-state trellis.
