  • Patent number: 4817394
Abstract: The invention discloses process and apparatus for separating high purity oxygen and crude argon from air by fractional distillation. The improvement, which applies to both dual pressure and triple pressure configurations, entails maximizing the distillation efficiency of both the HP rectifier (2 of FIG. 1) and the LP N.sub.2 rectifier (1a and 1b) by feeding precisely correct quantities of liquid air reflux to each via respective valves (6) and (8). In order to efficiently produce the required amount of liquid air, liquid oxygen at least 0.2 ATA above LP column pressure is evaporated by two air condensers: a total condenser (22) and a partial condenser (23).

  • Patent number: 4813380
Abstract: Solids are separated from the flue gases of a fluidized bed reactor with a circulating bed and provided with cooling surfaces and are recycled to the reactor through return ducts disposed at different heights in the reactor. To control the operation of the reactor the heat removed from the reactor chamber is regulated by changing the suspension density in the reactor chamber. A required suspension density is obtained by regulating the flow of the solids through each return duct.

  • Patent number: 4811493
Abstract: An improved dryer-cooler apparatus cures or dries a heat sensitive coating on a moving substrate in a manner to minimize problems related to heating. The apparatus comprises a cooling plate, an end block at each end of the cooling plate and a plurality of heating lamps extending between the end blocks, above a reflective face of the cooling plate. The cooling plate has a plurality of cooling passages which extend from the top to bottom ends thereof, and each end block has a plurality of lamp openings and has a plurality of coolant passage openings that each aligns with a coolant passage of the cooling plate. The ends of each heating lamp are supported in an unencumbered manner in the lamp openings of the end blocks. Thus, the heating lamps and the cooling plate and end blocks can expand and contract without damage when cyclically heated and cooled during periodic operation of the dryer-cooler apparatus.

  • Patent number: 4811496
Abstract: Method of correcting the track of an intermittently-running endless belt in a veneer dryer is disclosed. In a veneer dryer having a pair of intermittently movable endless belts provided under tension so as to form at least one straight passage therebetween through which a veneer sheet is conveyed by the endless belts while being heated by heating plates located above and below the passage, and means disposed adjacent to the opposite lateral edges of the endless belts and movable toward and away from said lateral edges for moving the belts laterally, the tension is released to loosen the belts after a predetermined number of stops of the endless belts and the belts are then moved at the edge thereof on the side corresponding to the direction in which they are displaced, by said means located adjacent to said edge, until an area of normal running track is reached by the belts.

  • Patent number: 4809445
Abstract: In a device for stabilizing the run of a material web, which successively runs over two rolls, namely a delivering and a receiving roll, there is a box provided that extends between the delivering and the receiving roll across the width of the paper web. This box has a so-called guide wall that extends along the course of the material web, with an air gap remaining between the guide wall and the material web. Additionally provided on the box are means which create a vacuum in the air gap. In a device of this type, the guide wall is shaped in a way such that its spacing from the theoretical trajectory plane tangent to the two rolls is in the center area of the material web greater than it is in the araa of the material web edges. A device of this type serves to better stabilize the smooth running of the material web on its way between the rolls.

  • Patent number: 4809620
Abstract: An apparatus for the combustion of a poorly combustible fuel in a fluidized bed comprises a vertical front wall through which the poorly combustible fuel is delivered in particulate form and two lateral walls extending rearwardly from the front wall. A fixed grate extends from a front input end towards a rear discharge end between the lateral walls, and the two sides and the front input end of the grate define spaces with the lateral walls and the front wall, respectively. The fixed grate is upwardly inclined over at least a portion of its length from the input end to the discharge end whereby the discharge end is disposed above the input end, and the particulate fuel is delivered to the input end for forming a fluidized bed on the grate.

  • Patent number: 4809446
Abstract: In a blower arrangement for blowing a gaseous treatment medium onto a longitudinally moving material web, nozzle plenums are arranged above and below the web and extend essentially perpedicularly to the transport direction of the web. Each nozzle plenum is divided lengthwise into two channels arranged one above the other by means of a horizontal partition wall. At one end of the nozzle plenum, both channels are simultaneously supplied with treatment medium flow, whereas at the other end, both channels are interconnected for flow between them. The lower channel including the blower nozzles is further divided by a diagonally extending vertical separation wall forming two complementary wedge-shaped tapering partial chambers which both simultaneously supply treatment medium to the blower nozzle or nozzles.

  • Patent number: 4809624
Abstract: A method for starting up a partial combustion process, using a burner, wherein finely divided carbon-containing fuel is supplied to a reactor or gasifier and an oxygen-containing gas is supplied separately from the said fuel to the reactor or gasifier and is mixed with the said fuel adjacent the outlet of the burner in the reactor or gasifier. During a predetermined period a low rank particulate carbon-containing fuel is supplied to the reactor prior to the start of the partial combustion process, said low rank fuel spontaneously reacting with oxygen when brought into contact with the said oxygen-containing gas and subsequently switching the burner to a less reactive finedly divided carbon-containing fuel.
