  • Patent number: 6912199
Abstract: A network node has multiple physical layer devices (PHYs), multiple media access controllers, and means for gathering and utilizing information regarding the capabilities of other nodes on the network. The node capability information may be gathered using hardware or software, and may involve gathering information from data frames received by the node, and/or from capability and status announcement frames received by the node. Hardware means for gathering the node capability information may include a receive processing block and/or a node discovery block, which examine all or portions of received frames, and which include a look-up table for storing and receiving information such as desired transmission rates for frames sent to other nodes. The PHYs of the interface in an exemplary embodiment are able to transmit and receive data frames or packets which are in accordance with different home phoneline networking alliance (HPNA) specifications, for example, HPNA 1.0 and HPNA 2.0.

  • Patent number: 6904037
Abstract: Voice and data streams transmitted from a conventional DSVD modem are interfaced directly to a network access server through a modified DSVD modem according to the invention. The voice and data is formatted into network data packets that are then routed directly to different endpoints through the network access server. The modified DSVD modem includes a packet framer that removes conventionally transmitted V.76 DSVD framing formats and stuffs bytes into the voice and data to form network packets. The network access server then routes the voice and data packets to the different endpoints identified in a packet header. Since the voice and data are output from the DSVD modem in data packets, the voice and data can be routed more efficiently to different network endpoints.

  • Patent number: 6904060
Abstract: A system and method to detect a call trigger during a call without requiring a service platform to remain connected to the call. A first communication device transmits a call having call signaling and user communications. A signaling processor receives the call signaling from the first communication device and selects a connection to a second communication device. An interworking unit receives the user communications from the first communication device and converts the user communications from a time division multiplex format to asynchronous transfer mode cells that identify a selected connection to the second communication device and transports the user communications to the second communication device. The interworking unit detects a call trigger in the user communications. The interworking unit transmits call trigger data to the signaling processor.

  • Patent number: 6898197
Abstract: A cellular radio system in which a base station receiver can receive, on the reverse link, data from a mobile terminal in one of four control modes. In the first mode, the mobile terminal sends an independent user pilot, not synchronized with the base station, on the reverse link and the user data channel is synchronized to this independent user pilot. In the second mode, the mobile terminal slaves its user pilot to the pilot it receives from the base station and the user data channel is synchronized with this slaved user pilot. This second mode allows the user terminal to receive round trip delay information for purposes of geolocation and rapid reacquisition. In the third mode, the mobile terminal slaves its user pilot to the incoming base station pilot, as in the case of mode two, but the user data channel operates in the orthogonal mode using the ranging information received from the base station. The phase relationship between the user pilot channel and the user data channel is calibrated.

  • Patent number: 6894983
Abstract: A method for network management includes sending a trap message from a network end switch to client premises equipment (CPE) over a network connection therebetween, informing the CPE of a change in a network management information base (MIB) of the end switch. A request from the CPE to the end switch, subsequent to the trap message, to read information from the MIB, and the information is provided from the end switch to the CPE responsive to the request. The change is determined to have been implemented by the CPE based on the request to read the information. There is thus no need for the CPE to poll the processor for further trap messages.

  • Patent number: 6894997
Abstract: A system and method for encoding and transmitting data with a spread-spectrum packet-switched system. Data to be transmitted by a packet transmitter are encoded for privacy and to restrict intelligent receipt of the data to the intended recipient. The encoded data is demultiplexed into sub-data-sequence signals which are spread-spectrum processed and then combined as a multichannel spread-spectrum signal. The multichannel spread-spectrum signal is concatenated with a header to output a packet-spread-spectrum signal which is transmitted over radio waves to a packet receiver. The packet receiver obtains timing for the multichannel spread-spectrum signal from the header. The multichannel spread-spectrum signal is then despread and multiplexed as received-encoded data. The received-encoded data is decoded by the intended recipient and stored in a receiver memory for output.

  • Patent number: 6891847
Abstract: Transmissions within a communication channel utilized by devices of a computer network that are outside of a device's designated time slot are accommodated through the use of a clear channel assessment time. The clear channel assessment time takes into account the device's designated transmission time slot within the communication channel with respect to those of other network devices. Thus, the clear channel assessment time may be a time period that is the product of a predetermined clear channel waiting time and a numerical representation of the difference between the device's designated transmission time slot within the communication channel and that of another network device that completed a preceding transmission.

  • Patent number: 6891824
Abstract: A method and apparatus for effecting low cost audible communication between a local machine at a local site and a remote modem, over a wide area network. A remote modem, e.g. in a modem pool is configured to include a converter added to a telephone interconnection of a modem in the modem pool. As the remote modem receives communication(s) from the local machine the signal generated by the modem onto a local phone line for communication with the remote computer, is split and the converter receives the signal (heading to or from a WAN) from the telephone side of the modem. The converter provides an audio output that is input to sound processing hardware on an interface PC that runs an audio streaming program which packetizes and puts the audio signal back onto the WAN for transmission to the local computer.

  • Patent number: 6876678
Abstract: A Serial Communications Controller (SCC) is configured to provide TDM multiplexing of signals regardless of whether such signals are synchronous or asynchronous signals. When an asynchronous signal is detected, the data rate of the asynchronous signal is automatically measured. The two data streams are buffered, e.g., by FIFOs. Data is clocked-out from the FIFOs into periods of a TDM signal which has a period at least twice that of the faster of the two input signals. In one embodiment alternate periods of the TDM signal are used for the first and second input signals. Bits from the slower of the two input signals are repeated a sufficient number of times, in the TDM signal, that ratio of the rate at which new data bits from the second signal are placed into the TDM signal, to the rate of output of bits from the first stream onto the TDM signal equals (on average) the ratio of the data rates of the first and second input streams.

  • Patent number: 6876668
Abstract: A system capable of dynamically reserving bandwidth and adjusting bandwidth reservations for active sessions of data communication in a data communications device is provided. The system generally separates the operation of bandwidth allocation and adjustment from the operation of data transport through the device, thereby allowing bandwidth reservations and adjustments to be made without disturbing sessions of data communication that are actively being transported through the device. The system can accept requests to allocate or reserve bandwidth in a data communications device using bandwidth reservation protocols such as RSVP. The reservation requests create sender state data that can be used to compute resource allocation data. The resource allocation data can be used to label data storage locations in a data storage mechanism according to the required bandwidth reservations.

  • Patent number: 6873617
Abstract: The invention relates to equipment for call-completion analysis on high speed data links in an SS#7 network. A pyramidal structure service observing system processes data packets from all high speed SS#7 data links communicates directly with other service observing systems in order to create real-time call detail records and statistical reports. The first system which receives an initial address message signal has jurisdiction over a call. If a second service observing system receives data on the same call, that data is forwarded to the first service observing system in real-time so that interim call detail records may be generated while calls are still in-progress. While any suitable and available path may be used to forward the data, a wide area network or a local area network provides the preferred path.

  • Patent number: 6870828
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for recognizing and accessing telephone numbers from a Web page. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, an HTML code of an accessed Web page is parsed and converted. A parsing algorithm applied to the text in the HTML document pattern-recognizes telephone numbers. Coding is added to iconify the recognized telephone numbers. The user's Internet-capable telephone displays the iconified telephone numbers. All previously-active links and graphical displays supported by the Internet-capable telephone are maintained in this display. To call a phone number, the user selects the icon, and the Internet-capable phone determines how to initiate the call. For a two-line phone, the Internet-capable telephone initiates a telephone call to the selected number. For a one-line phone, the Internet-capable telephone determines whether the line is available for a call. If the line is not currently being used, the Internet-capable telephone initiates a voice call to the selected number.
