Patent number: 7016330Abstract: Enhanced methods for channel quality estimation utilize soft symbol output data to generate a statistic or set of statistics that are representative of BER for each of a plurality of bursts corresponding to a composite channel. The statistics are mapped into a BER estimate to generate individual BER estimates for each of the plurality of bursts. The individual BER estimates are combined to obtain an estimate of the BER for the entire composite channel. Alternatively, the BER estimate for the composite channel may then be mapped into a quality estimate for the composite channel using a monotonic function.Type: GrantFiled: November 7, 2003Date of Patent: March 21, 2006Assignee: InterDigital Technology CorporationInventors: Philip J. Patent number: 7012912Abstract: A system and method for power control and scheduling of sub-carriers in an OFDM communication system. The receiver dynamic range can be minimized by a power control loop that attempts to maintain received power over a noise floor in a predetermined range. If the received power relative to a noise floor in allocated sub-carriers exceeds the predetermined range and the total received power is at the minimum, the scheduling system allocates an additional sub-carrier to the communication link. Additionally, if the received power relative to the noise floor is less than the predetermined range minimum, and the total received power is at a maximum, the scheduling system de-allocates a sub-carrier from the communication link. The scheduling system may also adjust an encoding rate to maintain a relatively constant symbol rate in each sub-carrier.Type: GrantFiled: March 24, 2004Date of Patent: March 14, 2006Assignee: Qualcomm IncorporatedInventors: Ayman Fawzy Naguib, Avneesh Agrawal, Arak Sutivong

Patent number: 7012884Abstract: The invention relates to zero-overhead, sequence reversible, and pattern independent orthogonal multiplexing to achieve high bit densities in direct sequence spread spectrum communication systems. A set of orthogonal spreading codes is selected. The orthogonal spreading codes are partitioned into partitioned sets. The partitioned sets are further expanded to include complement codes of the orthogonal spreading codes. The orthogonal spreading codes and the complement codes are mapped into a code index to create a spreading code set. A window of contiguous input data is partitioned into equal-size subsets, which are then mapped to a data index, to create a data set. The data set is mapped to the spreading code set to create a multiplex of spreading codes, and the multiplex of spreading codes are then summed to form a code multiplex. The code multiplex can then be sent in one transmit opportunity.Type: GrantFiled: November 2, 2001Date of Patent: March 14, 2006Assignee: Intel CorporationInventor: David M. Horne

Patent number: 7009980Abstract: A heterogeneous telecommunications system employs “out of band” signalling to automatically discover the identity of the two ports connecting two network elements through a specific link. Either of the connected network elements may be a circuit switching network element or a packet switching network element. One network element initiates the port discovery process and transmits an overhead signal, such as a SONET/SDH protection switching message, to the network element attached at the other end of the link. The other network element monitors the status of its ports and, when it detects a change in state at one of the ports, resulting from the first network element's transmissions, the receiving, or passive, network element recognizes the port as the port which forms a part of the link of interest. Each group of network elements, packet switching and circuit switching, elects a network element leader which coordinates requests for port identification.Type: GrantFiled: March 13, 2000Date of Patent: March 7, 2006Assignee: Lucent Technologies Inc.Inventor: Yang Cao

Patent number: 7009985Abstract: A switch, switched architecture and process for transferring data through an FCAL switch is disclosed. The switch uses multiple switch control circuits each coupled to one FCAL network and all connected to a crossbar switch. The switch control circuits are coupled together by a protocol bus for coordination purposes. Local conversations can occur on each FCAL loop and crossing conversations through the switch can occur concurrently. The OPN primitive is used to establish the connection before any data is transferred thereby eliminating the need for buffer memory in the switch control circuits. The destination address of each OPN is used to address a lookup table in each switch control circuit to determine if the destination node is local. If not, the destination is looked up and a connection request made on the protocol bus. If the remote port is not busy, it sends a reply which causes both ports to establish a data path through the backplane crossbar switch.Type: GrantFiled: January 21, 2003Date of Patent: March 7, 2006Assignee: Broadcom CorporationInventors: Alistair D. Patent number: 7006434Abstract: A system and a method of operating the system for non-disruptively inserting a node into the operations of an ATM ring uses the ring operations to update topology information and routing tables at the existing nodes to include therein the new node and one or more virtual paths associated with the new node. Basically, the node to be inserted establishes communications with a ring hub node over an established intra-ring management channel. The node and the ring hub node then exchange information over the management channel and the node performs its initializing routines in order that the node may operate to pass through traffic on the existing virtual paths. The new node next requests from the hub node the assignment of one or more virtual paths for directing traffic between that node and other nodes on the network. In response to the request, the hub node assigns one or more virtual paths to the requesting node and establishes a signaling channel to the node over one of the virtual paths.Type: GrantFiled: February 10, 2000Date of Patent: February 28, 2006Assignee: CIENA CorporationInventors: Edward Klein, Christopher J. Patent number: 7002902Abstract: Codes are applied to signals to reduce the number of transceivers and associated RF cabling extending from base electronics to antenna array electronics in a base station providing beam forming. The transceivers can be reduced to as few as one, and the RF cabling can be reduced to none. The codes may be orthogonal codes, such as Walsh codes. The codes are applied: to weights used to produce the beam forming, signal being transmitted or received, or both. The codes are applied a second time to decompose the coded weights/signal to associate the weights and signal with the beam forming. The coded weights/signal can be summed, including with other coded weights/signals, to produce a composite code division multiplexed signal for transmission between transceiver(s) and antenna array electronics over a single RF or non-RF cable spanning between the base electronics and array electronics.Type: GrantFiled: February 23, 2001Date of Patent: February 21, 2006Assignee: IPR Licensing, Inc.Inventors: James A. Patent number: 6999422Abstract: A communication device which efficiently transports packets through optimal routes. When there are two or more routes to reach a certain destination, a test packet generator generates a test packet for each route, one of them being designated as the reference test packet. A transmission time acquisition unit records the transmission time of each test packet, relative to that of the reference test packet. When a test packet is received, a reception time acquisition unit measures its reception time relative to the reception time of the reference test packet. Calculating the difference between the transmission and reception times and evaluating such difference values for all routes, a transport time evaluation unit ranks the routes in terms of their packet transport times. A packet transmitter selects an appropriate route from the ranked list of possible routes, and sends out packets to the selected route.Type: GrantFiled: April 30, 2001Date of Patent: February 14, 2006Assignee: Fujitsu LimitedInventor: Yuzuru Ishioka
