  • Patent number: 4685207
Abstract: A device for pulling up the slider of a slide fastener chain includes a pair of slider gripping fingers provided in opposed relation, one on each side of a slider guide groove formed in a slide fastener chain guide. The slider guide groove constitutes part of a slider passageway through which a slide fastener having a slider mounted thereon is capable of being passed and guided. The fingers are operatively associated with each other and coupled to an actuating mechanism which thrusts the fingers into the passageway to grip a slider and pull the slider up to a predetermined position as the slide fastener chain advances through the passageway, and which then withdraws the fingers from the passageway to release their grip on the slider so that the slider may pass through the passageway with the rest of the travelling fastener chain.

  • Patent number: 4685191
Abstract: An apparatus and process for expanding a tube at selective points about its circumference to join another tube. After a segment of a first tube is inserted into a second tube having an end sleeve segment with a larger diameter and wall thickness than the first tube, compression and subsequent radial expansion of elastomeric bars lodged along the generally open sides of a bushing located within the first tube end segment cause the elastomeric bars to radially expand the wall of the first tube. The wall of the first tube expands at selective points against the wall of the second tube in proximity to their respective ends, creating a selective interference fit therebetween.

  • Patent number: 4682397
Abstract: A method of inspecting a tube header bore comprises scoring an oxide scale layer within the bore using a hard scribing tool. The bore is then cleaned using one or more honing brushes having flexible bristles with carbide tips. After sufficiently cleaning the inner surface of the bore a florescent dye is applied to the surface for highlighting surface defects and a visual inspection is made. For easy access to the interior of the bore, the tube is cut at a point spaced from the bore. After the inspection is complete a new length of tube is connected such as by welding.

  • Patent number: 4667389
Abstract: An apparatus (10) and method is disclosed for connecting a pipe (12) and a test plug (28) comprising a carriage assembly (14) positioned on a base (16) that is capable of horizontal and vertical movement relative to base (16). Opposed pairs of fluid operated cylinders (56) are provided on opposite sides of carriage assembly (14) that support carriage assembly (14) on base (16) for relative vertical movement. A fluid control system associated with the cylinders (56) is selectively operated in two modes, an open pressure balanced float mode to permit relatively free lateral movement between the pipe (12) and test plug (28) for axial alignment, and a closed torque mode provided during make-up, for immediately detecting from an increase in fluid pressure in the cylinders (56) any excessive torque or misalignment of test plug (28) and pipe (12) resulting in a vertical deflection of the carriage assembly (14) thereby indicating when thread damage may be occurring.

  • Patent number: 4665613
Abstract: An apparatus, for forming a row of slide fastener coupling element, comprises a continuously rotatable die wheel having an annular peripheral groove for receiving a row of coupling element blanks in folded fashion, and a punching unit for forming coupling heads on the blanks in the groove. The punching unit includes a punch, an eccentric drive mechanism for imparting eccentric motion to the punch, and a linkage for regulating the eccentric motion of the punch, the drive mechanism having an outer ring connected at opposite ends to the punch and the linkage. Owing to the combination of the eccentric motion of the outer ring and the motion of the linkage, the punch is moved so as to follow the rotation of the die wheel while the coupling heads are shaped on each stroke of the punch.

  • Patent number: 4665603
Abstract: In a method and apparatus for forming a row of zigzag coupling elements, the entire rotating die wheel is heated by a built-in interior heater so as to remain at a temperature slightly lower than the temperature at which a monofilament of thermoplastic synthetic resin is deformable, the monofilament being folded in an annular peripheral groove of the die wheel into a row of U-shaped coupling element blanks. Then, immediately before coupling heads are shaped, the monofilament in the form of U-shaped coupling element blanks received in the annular peripheral groove is additionally heated locally by an exterior heater outside of the die wheel such that its temperature rises to a heat setting temperature.

  • Patent number: 4663817
Abstract: Continuous or other lengths of flat back plastic filament coil slide fastener chain is gapped in such a manner that the tape ends produced by the gapping are scrap-free and undamaged. The slide fastener chain to be gapped is held in a laterally taut state in a die and anvil apparatus while the interengaged coil elements are forced upwardly into engagement with blades which cleanly sever the outer leg portions of the coil elements, which leg portions are conveyed upwardly by suction. During the outer leg severing operation, the slide fastener chain is further stretched laterally and caused to spread apart slightly at its center line. The center portion of the chain between the removed coil outer leg portions is received in a control and stabilizing channel between the severing blades while an ascending punch acts on the remaining interior coupling portions of the coil elements and removes them cleanly from the tapes without damaging the tapes.
