  • Patent number: 4663837
Abstract: A furnace heat exchanger and support plate assembly are joined together by a cooperating oval rim defining an opening in the heat exchanger and an opening formed by a mating flange on a partition plate and extending perpendicular to the plane of the plate. The flange on the partition plate is inserted in the opening in the heat exchanger unit and expanded radially outward with respect to the central longitudinal axis of the openings by a multiple jaw expander mechanism which is inserted through the opening in the plate into the interior of the heat exchanger. A second expander apparatus is inserted in the opening after withdrawal of the first expander to engage and expand portions of the flanges which were not fully displaced by the first expander. The expander mechanisms include radially and axially movable jaws comprising plural oval shaped jaw segments which are engaged by an axially movable mandrel.

  • Patent number: 4658491
Abstract: An improved method for coating multi-piece explosion-proof housings with a corrosion-resistant material which permits assembly and disassembly without interference with the corrosion-proofing function of the coating is disclosed. The method features assembly of the portions of the housing together with spacer means and dipping or otherwise coating the housing portions with a corrosion-resistant material. The spacer is formed in order to cause seal members to be formed directly in the coating which are brought into compression with one another upon subsequent assembly of the housing without the spacer so that an effective seal is provided.

  • Patent number: 4656719
Abstract: A method of preparing bimetallic tubes or pipes for roll-forming ribs therefrom, in which the external tube is subjected to initial compressive stress is introduced, is characterized by roughening the ends of the internal tube, and after placing the internal tube in the external tube the ends of the external tube are clamped on the roughened segments of the internal tube with simultaneous axial displacement of a part of the material of the external tube corresponding to said compressive stresses of a required quantity. From the tube assembly thus prepared ribs are drawn. It is preferable that at least one end of the external tube is formed conically during clamping.

  • Patent number: 4653164
Abstract: To limit the exposure of personnel to radioactivity within the channel head of a steam generator of a nuclear-reactor plant a cartridge sleeve-blank loader for automatically sleeving a plurality of tubes without the intervention of personnel is provided. The cartridge loader includes a turret or drum which carries a plurality of sleeve blanks around its periphery. A lifter engages the bottom of each sleeve bank in its turn at a sleeve insertion position of the turret and inserts the sleeve blank into a tube. Successive sleeve blanks are indexed to the insertion position for insertion into tubes. The sleeve blanks are slightly bowed or curved so that when a sleeve blank is inserted as a sleeve into a tube, the sleeve, since the tube is linear, exerts a restoring force on the wall of a tube which holds the sleeve in the tube when the lifter is retracted. In inserting the sleeve blank, the lifter moves at a low speed until the leading end of the sleeve enters a tube. Then the speed of insertion is increased.

  • Patent number: 4653184
Abstract: A box holder vertically movably mounted on a frame is reciprocably movable between a box attaching position and a box receiving position. The box holder includes a recess for receiving a box and a clamp finger for retaining the box in the recess. The clamp finger is pivotably mounted on a slide block vertically movably disposed in a recessed portion defined in the box holder adjacent to the recess. The box holder further includes a cam facing the recessed portion and a cam follower provided on the clamp finger. Upon vertical movement of the slide block, the cam follower is brought into engagement with the cam to cause the clamp finger to angularly move toward and away from the recess, thereby releasably retaining the box in the recess. The box holder thus constructed is compact in structure and reliable in operation.

  • Patent number: 4653185
Abstract: An apparatus for automatically mounting tension springs (tension coil springs) to suspend a seat frame and a pad receiving member forming an automotive seat is disclosed which comprises a supply hopper, a transfer mechanism, a guide member, a setting device and a direction restricting member. In the apparatus, when loaded into the supply hopper, the tension springs are separated from one another and then discharged one by one therefrom to the transfer mechanism, where they are rectified in the right and left deviations thereof by the guide member before they are delivered to the setting device. Then, the tension springs are caught and lifted up by the setting device and, during this lifting operation, they are rectified in the direction thereof by the direction restricting member, so that they can be automatically mounted to the seat frame as well as to the pad receiving member.

  • Patent number: 4653171
Abstract: A structure such as a wall of a high temperature furnace door is lined with fibrous refractory insulation material which has structural fastening devices embedded therein or interleaved between planks thereof. In one embodiment, plank-like pieces of fibrous refractory material are arranged in a stack extending edgewise with respect to the wall, and sheets of expanded metal are positioned between the refractory planks and are anchored to the wall. The interleaved stack of refractory planks and expanded metal sheets are compressed such that the metal sheets become essentially embedded within the refractory material to securely grip large surface areas of the planks to hold the refractory planks in place. In preferred practice, rods extend through slots formed in the wall and connect with the expanded metal sheets to hold the sheets of expanded metal in place after the interleaved stack has been compressed.

  • Patent number: 4653172
Abstract: A method for forming a sealed coupling between two bodies each body presenting an abutment surface. The respective bodies are arranged so that their respective abutment surfaces are axially adjacent one another, defining a space therebetween in which a deformable gasket is disposed. An axial external force is applied to the bodies for compressing the abutment surfaces together against the gasket to form a seal between the bodies. The bodies are immobilized relative to one another while the external force is being applied to the bodies so that sufficient compression will be maintained by the abutment surfaces to preserve the integrity of the seal when the external axial force is withdrawn. The external axial force is then withdrawn, leaving the two bodies coupled together via the seal.

  • Patent number: 4651403
Abstract: The improved fuel assembly has a plurality of elongated corner posts extending longitudinally between and releasably and rigidly interconnecting top and bottom nozzles so as to form a rigid structural skeleton of the fuel assembly. Additionally, a plurality of transverse grids are supported at axially spaced locations along the corner posts and a plurality of fuel rods are supported by the grids. Certain groups of the fuel rods are spaced apart laterally from one another by a greater distance than the rest of the fuel rods so as to define a number of elongated channels extending between the top and bottom nozzles. A cluster assembly having a cluster plate with a plurality of elongated rods is adapted to be removably supported on the top nozzle with its rods extending through the channels. The rods can be a plurality of guide thimbles in the case of one cluster assembly, or a plurality of oversized fuel rods in the case of another cluster assembly.

  • Patent number: 4651400
Abstract: Both an apparatus and a process for removing fuel rods from spent fuel assemblies is disclosed herein. The apparatus of the invention includes a locking plate having a plurality of tapered holes registrable with the rods of a fuel rod assembly, a plurality of tapered collets, each of which includes a hollow portion for receiving the ends of the fuel rods, and a plurality of hydraulically operated plungers for withdrawing each of the tapered collets into its respective tapered hole in the locking plate, thereby contracting the hollow portion of the collet around its respective rod in gripping engagement. The use of hydraulic plungers causes each of the collets to apply substantially the same gripping force onto its respective fuel rod. Additionally, the apparatus includes a means for confirming whether each of the collets has grippingly engaged its respective rod.
