  • Patent number: 4611378
Abstract: First and second tabs are affixed to the surface of a body in close proximity with each other and in partially side by side relation. First and second optical fibers are affixed to the first and second tabs, respectively, and are movable therewith. The optical fibers are positioned transverse to the tabs and in alignment about a mechanical quiescent point in the absence of strain in the body. A source of light produces and directs light through the first and second optical fibers. A light detector detects light transmitted through the first and second optical fibers and determines the intensity thereof, which is proportional to the magnitude of compression and tension strains in the body.

  • Patent number: 4610061
Abstract: A projectile for a centerfire cartridge that achieves maximum energy transfer with limited target penetration when fired from snub-nosed pistols. A hollow point lead bullet is provided with an aluminum jacket of sufficient hardness to avoid fouling the pistol barrel and which allows the cartridge containing the projectile to feed reliably in auto-loading pistols and yet does not restrict normal expansion of the bullet upon impact with the target. The jacket extends into the nose recess of the bullet and covers the peripheral portion of the bullet base, whereby the jacket is securely fastened to the bullet and separation subsequent to impact is prevented. The jacket is uniformly notched at the nosetip annulus to weaken the aluminum jacket and promote upset at surprisingly low impact velocities.

  • Patent number: 4608745
Abstract: In a method for automatically attaching successive fly strips to a continuous slide fastener chain, the successive strips are fed to a standby point one after another by a conveyor horizontally spaced from a sewing machine by a gap in which the standby point is disposed. A preceding strip is supplied from the standby point to the sewing machine with its trailing end portion hanging in the gap, while a succeeding strip is kept waiting at the standby point for a subsequent supply. When the trailing end of the preceding strip has passed a fixed point downstream of the standby point in the gap as the sewing of the preceding strip progresses, the succeeding strip is supplied at a speed higher than the rate at which the sewing of the preceding strip progresses.

  • Patent number: 4607426
Abstract: A swaging mandrel is inserted in a tube confined by a tube sheet or other surrounding structure. A pair of seals define the axial limits of a hydraulic pressure zone within the tube sheet in which radial expansion of the tube takes place in response to fluid pressure. At the secondary side of the tube sheet, an elastomeric ring extends beyond the tube sheet and, in response to the fluid pressure, produces an attenuated radial expansion force that bulges the tube to produce a tight seal at the tube sheet surface and a positive mechanical interlock between the tube and the tube sheet.

  • Patent number: 4607425
Abstract: A curved slide fastener chain and a method for producing a curved slide fastener are disclosed. The curved slide fastener chain comprises a pair of fastener tapes and a plurality of fastener element rows planted on each of a pair of the fastener tapes. Each of the element rows includes a straight and a curved inter-engagement portion. The curved inter-engagement portions are dis-inter-engaged while the straight inter-engagement portions are inter-engaged, so that each of the pair of fastener tapes are able to extend in a straight line. Therefore, deformation of the curved inter-engagement portions due to heat and tension applied thereto during the washing, dewatering and drying steps in producing a curved slide fastener can be prevented.

  • Patent number: 4606099
Abstract: The method starts with bringing the stack of slats to be assembled into a standby position. The slats are then removed from the bottom of the magazine and stepwise provided with connecting elements having hooks which are then engaged with loops provided on carrier strips of the shutter. Thereupon, the hooks are bent to close and the slats are moved downwardly by steps. After suspending the last slat, the carrier strips are cut through above the last slat, so that on a conveyor provided below, the assembled shutter forms a stack to be removed. This process is continuous, so that in immediate succession, the assemblage of a further shutter begins.

  • Patent number: 4604783
Abstract: In a method of and apparatus for forming element-free spaces in a continuous slide fastener chain at ends of successive fly strips sewn to the slide fastener chain, the chain having a pair of intermeshed rows of coupling elements, portions of the intermeshed rows of coupling elements to be removed are detected by a sensor assembly disposed at a fixed position spaced a first distance upstream from a gap-forming device before such portions arrive at the gap-forming device. The sensor assembly first determines whether the longitudinal extent of a space provided between the confronting ends of an adjacent pair of the fly strips is larger than a predetermined distance, and then on the bases of the determination, controls the feeding of the chain and the operation of the gap-forming device so that the element-free spaces can be provided accurately at the ends of the respective fly strips regardless of the spacing between adjacent fly strips.

  • Patent number: 4601092
Abstract: A method and a device for attaching a rail on a timber support. The device includes a helically threaded fastener adapted to be screwed into a helically threaded borehole in the support after a rectangular metal insert is positioned in a rectangular opening at the periphery of the borehole. The borehole is sufficiently large that the fastener only contacts the timber support via contact with the insert. The rectangular opening is longer than the insert so that there is radial play between the insert and one end of the insert. The other end of the insert is adapted to contact a sloped side of the thread of the fastener. As the fastener is screwed into the borehole, the sloped side of the fastener presses the insert parallel to and perpendicular to the screwing axis of the fastener. As a result, the insert elastically expands parallel to and perpendicular to the screwing axis. Because the expansion perpendicular to the screwing axis is less than the radial play, no radial forces act on the timber support.
