  • Patent number: 5531169
Abstract: Liquid waste material, particularly material containing sulfuric acid, may be combusted using an oxygen-rich material by a process in which:(i) a primary oxidant and fuel issuing from a burner are combusted in a furnace, the proportion of primary oxidant to fuel being such that there is insufficient oxygen to combust the fuel completely;(ii) introducing into the furnace the liquid waste material in atomized form around the burner;(iii) introducing into the furnace spaced from the burner a secondary oxidant which contains sufficient oxygen to combust completely the fuel not combusted by the primary oxidant the direction in which each of the primary oxidant, fuel and liquid waste material is introduced being such that the substances flow in substantially the same direction, the rate at which the primary oxidant, fuel, liquid waste material and secondary oxidant are introduced being such that a plug flow of substances through the furnace is created.

  • Patent number: 5529020
Abstract: Tube lane blocking is accomplished by a plurality of removable blocks which can be fitted and extracted from the central region, in the inner casing of the steam generator. The blocks are superposed in a stack resting on the tube plate, and are immobilized at their ends by a holding fixture. An anti-liftoff blocking member at opposite ends of the blocks prevents them from being lifted off the tube plate. When maintenance or repair of the tube plate is required, the holding fixture and anti-liftoff blocking member can be withdrawn in order to permit access to the tube plate and the adjacent tube bundle.

  • Patent number: 5528840
Abstract: The present invention provides a lightweight, portable drying apparatus which naturally, uniformly and quickly drys footwear and small items of apparel such as shoes, hats, gloves and scarves. The portable drying apparatus includes a flexible waterproof bag having an inner support structure for holding multiple pieces of footwear and small articles of apparel. The flexible bag may be rigidly supported by a top panel and a collapsible waterproof tri-fold support insert which defines the boundaries of an enclosed inner chamber. During operation, ambient air is circulated throughout the chamber using a blower assembly mounted on the support structure for drawing air into the chamber, and a vent formed in the flexible bag material for releasing the drawn air from the chamber. In a second embodiment, the support structure includes a base panel for defining a bottom portion of the chamber and two or more removable flexible rods bent in an arch shape to form a dome shaped structure.

  • Patent number: 5526582
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for operating a pressurized reactor system in order to precisely control the temperature within a pressure vessel in order to minimize condensation of corrosive materials from gases on the surfaces of the pressure vessel or contained circulating fluidized bed reactor, and to prevent the temperature of the components from reaching a detrimentally high level, while at the same time allowing quick heating of the pressure vessel interior volume during start-up. Superatmospheric pressure gas is introduced from the first conduit into the fluidized bed reactor and heat derived reactions such as combustion and gassification are maintained in the reactor. Gas is exhausted from the reactor and pressure vessel through a second conduit.

  • Patent number: 5524360
Abstract: A method and apparatus for ventilating pocket spaces in a multi-cylinder dryer of a paper machine, in particular a high-speed paper machine whose running speed is higher than about 800 meters per minute, in the area of a so-called twin-wire draw. In the twin-wire draw, the drying cylinders in the drying group are arranged in two rows placed one above the other, in which rows the successive cylinders are placed in the upper row and in the lower row as interlocked. In each cylinder group, there are two drying wires, an upper wire and a lower wire for pressing the paper web against heated faces of the drying cylinder while being guided by guide rolls placed in gaps between the cylinders. The paper web runs as free draws between the rows of cylinders.

  • Patent number: 5522326
Abstract: A device for incinerating solid and/or liquid toxic substances, especially projectiles filled with chemical warfare agents. Because the ammunition to be incinerated may have been inadvertently not disarmed the incinerator plant must be able to withstand an operating pressure of at least 40 bar. The incineration includes a rotatably mounted unit consisting of a rotary tubular kiln, an afterburning chamber, and a waste heat boiler. The unit is designed in a corresponding pressure-proof manner, and the rotary tubular kiln as well as the afterburning chamber are lined with refractory material. The operating pressure is generated by a compressor arranged upstream of the incinerator plant, and it is released by an expander arranged downstream of the entire plant.

  • Patent number: 5522327
Abstract: A method and apparatus for a pellet fuel burning heating unit for burning corn or wood pellets having a balanced pressure system having a four-way split combustion intake airstream. The invention includes a combustion air blower system for providing combustion air into a firebox containing a burner under positive pressure and at the same time providing a negative pressure to remove the combustion gases from the firebox. A pressure regulator and air splitter maintains a balance between the positive and negative pressure and adjusts the air flow into the firebox and out the exhaust. The exhaust is provided through a bank of exhaust tubes running from the top of the firebox to an exhaust manifold. The blower air moves into the pressure regulator and air splitter dividing the air flow such that a portion enters the heating unit exhaust manifold to produce a negative pressure and the remaining portion enters the heating unit burner under positive pressure.

  • Patent number: 5513444
Abstract: A device for drying timber in the form of elongated wood pieces, such as boards or planks, comprises one or more drying rooms and means for introducing dry in-take air into the drying room and evacuate more moist exhaust air therefrom. Several sets of spacing elements are arranged in an individual drying room, said elements being spaced from each other and delimiting a plurality of separate compartments in the drying room. The spacing elements are movable, for instance rotatable, so as to be adjustable between a first position, in which the width of the individual compartment is larger than the thickness of the wood pieces to enable unobstructed in-feed thereof into the compartment, and a second position, in which the width of the compartment has been reduced so far that the spacing elements in two adjacent sets contact and clamp the wood pieces so as to counteract deformation thereof during drying.

  • Patent number: 5513581
Abstract: A distributor chute for bulk material, in particular for use in a bell-less blast furnace top charging device, has several inclined transverse plates in the region of its impact zone. The transverse plates create retaining pockets between their inner faces and the surface of the distributor chute. Two adjacent transverse plates limit between the outer face of the first transverse plate and the inner face or the second transverse plate a retaining chamber. If the inclination of the chute is reduced, the bulk material moves from the retaining pocket to the retaining chamber.
