  • Patent number: 8806049
Abstract: A peer-to-peer (P2P) overlay network, which comprises a streaming source and a plurality of peers arranged in distribution layers, is arranged such that the total number of distribution layers of the overlay network is reduced. First, the upload capacity of each individual peer is determined and a maximum number of overlay peers to which said each individual peer can upload is calculated. Then, the peers are arranged in hierarchical order in relation to the streaming source on the basis of the maximum number of peers to which each individual peer can upload data. A higher number results in the individual peer being arranged in a distribution layer closer to the streaming source while a lower number results in the individual peer being arranged in a distribution layer further from the streaming source. Thus, the total number of distribution layers of the overlay network is reduced.

  • Patent number: 8806047
Abstract: A skip function for broadcast or multicast media content is disclosed. In general, a receiving device simultaneously receives two or more content streams transmitted for one or more radio stations and provides a skip function by buffering and switching between the two or more content streams. Initially, the receiving device provides playback of a first content stream of the two or more content streams. During playback of the first content stream, the receiving device buffers one or more most recently received content items from the other content streams. When a skip request is received, the receiving device performs a skip function by switching playback from the first content stream to a second content stream of the two or more content streams beginning at the start of the one or more most recently received content items from the second content stream that have been buffered at the receiving device.

  • Patent number: 8806023
Abstract: A wireless device that automatically forms a connection to a remote device in accordance with a peer-to-peer protocol. The remote device may be designated as an auto-connect device for the wireless device such that, when the wireless device determines that it is in the vicinity of the auto-connect device, it can re-form a connection to the remote device based on stored information for re-establishing connections among a persistent group of devices, but without any express user input. When a user requests that the wireless device perform a function that involves interaction with an auto-connect device, that function may be performed with the delay associated with forming a connection. Any of multiple techniques may be employed for identifying devices designated as auto-connect devices and for determining when the wireless device and a remote, auto-connect devices are in close proximity.

  • Patent number: 8792483
Abstract: A method for rejecting received SIP messages which are redundantly retransmitted used in a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) application architecture. In one embodiment, the method comprises: forwarding all the messages transmitted from a SIP application server to a SIP terminal, and dropping all the received SIP messages redundantly retransmitted from the SIP terminal to the SIP application server according to the transmission direction of said SIP messages; and correspondingly replying to the dropped SIP messages according to the message type thereof. The present invention also provides a corresponding retransmission rejection device and a network device comprising the same, and further provides a method and device for rapidly rejecting redundantly retransmitted SIP messages in the case where the memory space is limited. The present invention can be applied to a network device such as a SIP stateless proxy at a front end of a SIP application server cluster.

  • Patent number: 8793358
Abstract: In general, techniques are described for flexible packet processing. A network device for processing a data packet comprise a packet processing engine and a special handling unit external from the packet processing engine. The packet processing engine includes one or more of a plurality of pipelined packet processing units that, when processing the data packet, generate one or more events and determine whether to associate a trap and/or a sampling class with the data packet based on the generated events. The pipelined packet processing units then set bits of a vector that is passed between the pipelined packet processing units to associate the packet with the determined trap and/or sampling class, and processes the packet based on the set one or more bits of the vector.

  • Patent number: 8743786
Abstract: Teachings presented herein provide reduced computational complexity and/or memory requirements for a mobile terminal to determine the power backoff required for a multi-carrier uplink signal. In particular, the mobile terminal determines whether its power headroom falls below a pre-defined power headroom threshold, indicating that it is headroom limited. If so, it quantizes power allocated to each carrier of the multi-carrier uplink signal according to a pre-defined quantization policy. In doing so, the mobile terminal thereby reduces the possible configurations that may be selected for the multi-carrier uplink signal. Thus, in one embodiment, the mobile terminal stores the required backoff in a look-up table for only the configurations that may be selected when the mobile terminal is headroom limited. This relieves the memory requirements of the mobile terminal as compared to storing the required backoff for all possible configurations of the multi-carrier uplink signal.

  • Patent number: 8694593
Abstract: A system and method for associating users with a micro-community that is relevant to an object reference. The object reference is anything that can be perceived either physically or conceptually, such as a location, a document, a calendar entry, a document, a news feed, a biometric key, an image, a news feed, etc. A micro-community engine identifies users who are associated explicitly with the object reference as well as people who would be interested in the object implicitly and associates them with a micro-community. The micro-community engine provides an intuitive and flexible means for communication between members of the micro-community.

  • Patent number: 8687575
Abstract: A wireless communication terminal apparatus wherein even when a SC-FDMA signal is divided into a plurality of clusters and the plurality of clusters are then mapped to respective discontinuous frequency bands (when C-SC-FDMA is used), the improvement effect of system throughput can be maintained, while the user throughput can be improved. In the apparatus, a DFT unit (210) subjects a symbol sequence of time domain to a DFT process, thereby generating signals of frequency domain. A setting unit (211) divides the signals input from the DFT unit (210) into a plurality of clusters according to a cluster pattern that is in accordance with an MCS set, an encoding size, or the number of Ranks occurring during MIMO transmissions, which is indicated in those signals input, and then maps the plurality of clusters to the respective ones of a plurality of discontinuous frequency resources, thereby setting a constellation of the plurality of clusters in the frequency domain.

  • Patent number: 8639778
Abstract: In various exemplary embodiments, a system and an associated method for presenting a commerce application to an electronic device of an end-user. The method includes establishing electronic communications from the end-user to a first server (e.g., an electronic marketplace) in response to the end-user accessing a widget presented by the first server, and establishing electronic communications between the first server and a second server. The second server may be another electronic marketplace. The first server sends a chrome to the end-user. Substantially concurrent with the first server sending a chrome, the second server transmits electronically an Iframe to be placed within the chrome on a browser on an electronic device of the end-user. The blending of the chrome and the Iframe is transparent to the end user; thus, the end-user may be unaware that additional information (e.g., in terms of the Iframe and any accompanying metadata) is being received from the second server.

  • Patent number: 8639769
Abstract: There is disclosed a method, system and computer readable medium for transferring data in a LAN-free environment, in particular for a tape backup or restore operation. Data of a client partition of a first server is sent to a partition of a LAN-free server through the Local Area Network (LAN). The data sent is then converted from TCP/IP protocol to Fibre Channel protocol. The converted data is sent to a Storage Area Network (SAN) through a Fibre Channel card and finally to a tape library. An advantage is thus to mutualize and virtualize resources, in particular Fibre Channel cards. Storage Area Network tape drives are shared using such host bus adapter cards. Certain embodiments avoid the reconfiguration of Storage Area Network tape drives when the client partition moves to a new hardware.
