  • Patent number: 6668173
Abstract: In an Internet system having instant message capability each of the plurality of users is provided with a wired or wireless device. The wireless device transmits location data indicating its location or status update messages based on its location to an instant message server. In this invention a wireless device or server associates the location data with status update messages indicating the status and/or location of the users carrying the wireless devices in accordance with the received location information. The instant messages are then transmitted by the instant message server to other users of the instant message system.

  • Patent number: 6654618
Abstract: A variation compensating unit that compensates an amplitude variation and phase variation efficiently and that improves system reliability and communication quality. A first combining section generates a first combined signal by combining signal on different transmission paths in which a variation has not occurred. A second combining section generates a second combined signal by combining signal on the different transmission paths in which a variation has occurred. A compensation value calculating section calculates compensation values for compensating variation according to the transmission paths on the basis of the first combined signal, the second combined signal, and signal on each transmission path in which a variation has not occurred or in which a variation has occurred. A compensating section compensates variation dynamically on the basis of the compensation values.

  • Patent number: 6643496
Abstract: Data can be transmitted efficiently by sending control information as demanded by the status of a network. To accomplish this, a transmitting terminal transmits data using the Real-Time Transport Protocol (RTP), and control information, which is for ascertaining the status of the network, is transmitted by both the transmitting terminal and a receiving terminal using the Real-Time Transport Control Protocol (RTCP). The transmitting terminal transmits the control information as an RTCP packet at predetermined time intervals. If the transmission rate does not attain a target rate, however, the transmitting terminal raises the transmission rate by a predetermined percentage regardless of the predetermined time intervals. If it is judged that transmission loss has occurred based upon the control information sent from the receiving terminal, the transmitting terminal lowers the transmission rate by a predetermined percentage regardless of the predetermined time intervals.

  • Patent number: 6615043
Abstract: A scanning operation in a mobile terminal includes storing identifiers of sub-carrier frequencies known to be in use without regard to operator identity or location of use. A first scanning of only sub-carrier frequencies identified by the stored identifiers is performed in an attempt to find a used sub-carrier frequency. If no used sub-carrier frequencies are found in the first scanning, then a second scanning of sub-carrier frequencies that are not associated with stored identifiers is performed.

  • Patent number: 6611687
Abstract: A wireless telecommunication system receives information from a wireless mobile unit and determines that the wireless mobile unit is within a designated region. Information specific to the designated region is received at a centrally located location-based message server. As the traveler enters the designated region, the wireless mobile unit then receives information specific to the designated region such as information relating to traffic problems or desired locations within the region. Alternatively, a problem is identified and designated as relating to a particular region, and wireless mobile units within the designated region are then identified so that information relating to the problem can be output thereto. As such, information specific to a region occupied to a traveler is received.

  • Patent number: 6611677
Abstract: A scanning antenna diversity system for motor vehicles having at least two antennas mounted in a multi-antenna installation, and connected to a switching logic circuit. The circuit has discrete switching positions, and a reversing position USmax. A receiver is coupled to logic circuitry for receiving a RF signal from one of switching positions or reversing position USmax. There is a diversity processor coupled to and controlled by receiver for producing a derived received signal from the RF signal, with diversity processor cyclically stepping the logic circuitry to another switching position during the presence of receiver interference. There is a maximum level indicator having its input coupled to the antennas, and having its output connected to the controllable logic circuitry for sensing the strongest actual levels of the antenna signals. Level indicator 39 continuously compares the received signals at antennas and activates the logic switching circuit in response to any interference.

  • Patent number: 6608827
Abstract: A method of allocating time slots in a time division multiple access cellular telephone system increases the traffic capacity of a base station's RF channel. A method is provided for operating in half rate mode while maintaining adequate signal quality over the RF channel communications link between a base station and a mobile station. In full rate mode, each mobile station is allocated at least four of the twelve slots. For mobile stations experiencing little or no signal deterioration from other sources, a channel can be operated in half rate mode with little or no adverse effect to the signal quality. For mobile stations that are experiencing signal deterioration, the same channel can provide full rate mode support.
