  • Patent number: 6580905
Abstract: A system and method are provided for controlling the gain of signals transported over transmission media in a distributed antenna network. The system includes a plurality of remote antenna units where each remote antenna unit includes a signal level comparator for comparing the level of the signals received by the respective antenna unit with a predetermined reference level, and a gain controller for reducing the gain of the remote antenna unit when the signal level comparator determines that the level of the received signal exceeds said predetermined reference level. The system may accommodate TDMA systems when a gain controller is used that is fast enough to respond within the time slots of the received signals. As a result, the signal levels output from the remote antenna units are prevented from exceeding a maximum signal level.

  • Patent number: 6580907
Abstract: National mobile networks are provided with a proxy location register for storing user identities in association with respective network identities. Users have an associated “mobile home” for storing call handling instructions and messages recorded by a Voicemail system. When a user roams from a current host network to a visited network, he may request that his mobile home be moved from its current location, most likely that current host network, to the visited network, and retrieval of any messages that have been left for that user can now be done without involving real-time use of international links between networks. Furthermore, when the mobile home has moved, its new location, with or without call handling instructions, can be manually or automatically notified to all other networks, or a subset, for location register updating.

  • Patent number: 6577875
Abstract: In response to determining that the total uplink (UL) interference in a cell has exceeded a predetermined threshold or value, a base station (BS) instructs a plurality of the mobile stations (MS) currently operating in the cell to reduce their current UL power by a predetermined amount (e.g., value of dB or percentage). Such instruction may override conventional closed loop PC instructions to the mobiles in certain embodiments. In such a manner, the UL power reduction is shared in a fairly equal manner by all mobile stations in the cell and overload can be reduced and/or avoided. Subsequently, mobiles stations moving away from the BS toward the cell border may be permitted to increase their UL power so as to maintain a connection. In certain embodiments, the invention is utilized in the context of a code division multiple access (CDMA) system.

  • Patent number: 6577872
Abstract: Synchronization is effected in a cellular telecommunications network between a timing unit located at control node (e.g., RNC) of the network and a slave timing unit (STU) located at a controlled node (e.g., base station) of the network. Upon determining that a synchronization adjustment of the slave timing unit is necessary, an adjustment signal (e.g., voltage signal) is caused to be input to the oscillator of the slave timing unit in order to change the frequency of the slave's oscillator. Frame counter(s), in communication with the oscillator at the slave timing unit, will thus follow the oscillator continuously with smooth phase adjustments. By avoiding a direct adjustment of the frame counter(s), undesirable phase jumps or steps are avoided that can potentially disturb the air-interface between a base station and mobile station (MS).

  • Patent number: 6577873
Abstract: An apparatus and method for extending the service area in a mobile communication system is provided, in which the service area is defined with a normal mode or an extension mode based on a distance between the base station and the mobile station and, in case of the extension mode, a transmission clock used by the mobile station for transmitting signals is changed, thus extending the service area. The access is attempted in the normal mode, and the transmission clock for transmitting the mobile signal is advanced the initial delay in the extension mode when the access fails. The access is reattempted with repeating the control of the transmission clock until the number of times of the access attempt reaches a predetermined number of times. When the number of times of the access currently attempted is greater than the predetermined number of times, the extension mode is converted to the normal mode, returning to the initial state.
