Abstract: A helicopter rotor blade of composite material, characterized by the absence of a spanwise metal spar, has tip weight attachment means for supporting stacks of washer-like metal shim weights in the composite material of the blade adjacent its tip to obtain both dynamic chordwise and static spanwise balance of the blade. Three holes are bored in the composite material from the underside of the blade into which three tip weight assemblies are inserted and are adhesively or otherwise secured to the composite material. Each assembly includes a cylindrical liner, a central hollow stud and a nut which engages external threads on the stud for holding the weights in stacked configuration. A plate forming a closure for the hole completes the skin of the blade and a screw threaded into the end of the stud secures the plate in place.

Abstract: A Tesla-type turbine including turbine blade cooling means is disclosed. The turbine blades define a plurality of alternate spaces, with an air-conducting cooling space positioned between each pair of turbine or working spaces. While hot working gas expands between blades in the turbine spaces, cooling air flows in the opposite direction in the adjacent cooling spaces to cool the turbine blades. The disclosed turbine construction provides for axial air inflow and radial air outflow, with axial exhaust of working gas. After being heated by contact with the turbine blades, the cooling air is utilized in the combustion chamber of the turbine.
Abstract: A pure fluid interface device for proportional linear control of high temature, high pressure, hot gas flow from the exhaust of a rocket motor. The interface device receives the hot gas by direct bleeding from the rocket exhaust system and directs the gas to the control system of a missile airframe. The proportional linear control of the interface is achieved through a pair of positive displacement pistons which engage a jet pipe, charged with the hot gas, for pivotal movement of the jet pipe for alignment of the orifice of the jet pipe with one or both exit ports in the body of the interface device to direct the hot gas through the desired exit port.

Abstract: A mechanism utilizing the energy of the surf including a gravitational bucket with a rack on the outside thereof. The rack engages a gear which drives a reciprocating water pump. The pump transports water to a tank for use later as a source of steady controllable energy. This invention relates a mechanism to be built on a suitable seashore for tapping the energy of the surf thereof. The primary object of the invention is to provide a means to tap the energy of the surf and to store the energy in a huge energy storage tank in the form of potential energy for later usage in driving various machineries, including generator, A further object of the invention is to provide, despite the pulsating nature of the energy input, a steady and controllable energy output making possible the uniform revolution of machinery driven by the energy.
Abstract: The combustion section of the gas turbine is comprised of an engine casing receiving compressor discharge air and housing a plurality of combustion chamber assemblies having removable inner center liners. The combustion chamber assemblies are comprised of an outer liner having an end wall in which fuel injectors are mounted and the removable inner center liner extending within the outer liner from the end wall to define an annular combustion chamber space adjacent the end wall.
Abstract: Underwater power apparatus for harnessing a flowing river or large stream, includes blades or sails moving within a housing and in a circuit on a power leg and return leg. The housing directs the stream flow onto the power leg to drive the apparatus and diverts the flow from the return leg to provide a quiescent area for the return leg. Preferably, the blades or sails are opened when on the power leg and are folded or closed when on the return leg to reduce resistance. The underwater power apparatus may have either arcuate or linear power and return legs. In the latter case, the legs can be of sufficient length to develop a high power output. Since the apparatus is disposed completely underwater it disrupts neither the scenic beauty nor the navigation of the river.
Abstract: An exhaust gas processing device for use with internal combustion engines is disclosed which is generally of the afterburner type, including a cylindrical reactor in which unburned carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons are consumed and an exhaust pipe connected near one end of the cylindrical reactor in such manner as to direct the flow of gases tangentially into the reactor to produce a vortical flow pattern. Additional air for combustion is supplied by means of an engine-driven air pump, and this air flow is also directed into the reactor chamber in a manner to produce a vortical flow pattern which is combined with the vortical flow of exhaust gases. An ignition device such as a spark plug is supplied at the upstream end of the reactor chamber to assure ignition of the exhaust gas mixture. Flame propagation is maintained through the use of annular internal baffles or flame holders exposed to the ignited gases and which become very hot and operate somewhat similarly to glow plugs.
Abstract: A thermal reactor for an internal combustion engine wherein when the temperature of the engine is low, exhaust gas exhausted from the engine is reacted in an inner core before it is mixed with secondary air and then guided to a riser member where it is heat-exchanged with intake gas mixture and thereafter exhausted through a bypass passage, and when the temperature of the engine is moderate to high the exhaust gas is mixed in the inner core with the secondary air introduced into the inner core through the vicinity of the riser member, whereby unburnt component in the exhaust gas is burnt and exhausted.
Abstract: A combustion liner for a gas turbine combustion apparatus is composed of a series of ceramic wall rings coaxially aligned from the upstream to the downstream end of the liner. The ceramic rings are connected so as to be free to expand radially relative to each other while maintaining alignment. One type of connection between the rings involves notches distributed around the ends of a ring and bosses distributed around the adjacent end of the next ring entering into the notches. Another type of interconnection involves notches distributed around adjacent ends of two ceramic rings with a metal ring disposed between them having bosses which engage in some of the notches to align the parts. The liner is supported by supports at the ends of the liner from an outer casing. One support includes a spring to accommodate relative expansion of the liner and outer casing.
Abstract: A jet deflecting device has a first rotatable pipe section connected to the nd of an engine jet pipe and a second pipe section rotatably connected to the end of the first pipe section. Nozzle flaps are provided at the end of the second pipe section, and coupled to be moved inwardly and outwardly in response to axial movement of a nozzle actuating skirt slidably mounted at the end of the second pipe section. A first drive motor on the stationary jet pipe directly rotates the first pipe section by way of driving gears. A second drive motor is coupled by means of gears to rotate the second pipe section independently of rotation of the first pipe section. Actuating devices mounted on the engine jet pipe and providing a linear movement are coupled by way of actuating arms extending externally of the pipe sections to the nozzle actuated skirt for control of the nozzle flaps.

Abstract: A method of and apparatus for cracking methanol, for utilizing the cracked-methanol to operate a minimum-pollution fuel-combusting device. The heat of combustion gases which is brought into the presence of a catalyst is employed to crack the methanol into hydrogen gas and carbon monoxide gas. The hydrogen gas and carbon monoxide gas thereupon serve as the primary fuel source for the fuel-combusting device and these gases, or hydrogen alone, are further utilized to create a reduction atmosphere so as to render the heated combustion gases inert and pollution-free to discharge into the ambient atmosphere.
Abstract: A new combustion process wherein combustion efficiency is retained while reducing inlet air temperature to the combustor so as to obtain both reduced nitrogen oxides emissions and reduced CO emissions. A new combination of combustion apparatus and heat utilization apparatus are also provided.
