Abstract: A process and apparatus for the continuous production of fiber reinforced plastic grating articles and other elongated structures of varying cross section configurations are provided wherein continuous strands of fibers are coated with a thermosetting plastic resin material and woven into a pattern defined by upper and lower molding teeth arranged on continuous upper and lower molding tracks. The molding tracks rotate and cause the molding teeth to mesh, forming a molding cavity, wherein heat is applied to set the plastic resin. The fiber reinforced plastic grating articles formed by this process and apparatus have a unique cross-sectional configuration and arrangement of fibers providing for increased strength and reduced resin usage.
Abstract: A method and a system for stabilizing the core of a mold when injection molding plastic, wherein each production cycle comprises the steps of:(a) injecting a first plastic through a first gate into a chilling cavity with a core so that the cavity is not filled.(b) cooling the injected first plastic in the chilling cavity to thereby solidify the first plastic.(c) injecting, subsequent to injecting the first plastic, but not necessarily subsequent to the first plastic becoming completely solidified, a second plastic through a second gate into the chilling cavity whereby the cooled injected first plastic impedes any movement of the core caused by injecting the second plastic and whereby the injected second plastic fills the cavity and fuses with the previously injected plastic.(d) cooling the injected second plastic in the chilling cavity to thereby solidify the fused unit.(e) ejecting the solidified molded unit.
Abstract: A hydraulic actuator assembly for a push-type die closing unit of an injection molding machine capable of producing rapid die opening and closing movements with a small volume of pressurized fluid and an elevated die closing pressure in the closed die position, the assembly comprising a central power cylinder with a selectively bypassable power piston and two parallel, diametrally oppositely arranged single-acting travel cylinders. The low-pressure space on the forward side of the power piston is open to the pressure spaces of the two travel cylinders, and the total effective area of these pressure spaces is larger, by a relatively small amount, than the area of the high-pressure space to the rear of the power piston, said small amount determining the fluid volume necessary for the opening travel. A stationary plunger cooperates with a central bore in the rear portion of the power piston rod to produce a small pressure space for the closing travel.
Abstract: A gate for a mold comprises a plunger member mounted in the molding compound inlet conduit and adapted to prevent flow through the conduit in a first longitudinal position and to permit flow through the conduit in second longitudinal positions. The plunger defines an enlarged sealing end which is proportioned to prevent flow through the conduit on the first position. The sealing end defines a mold cavity-facing surface which is of larger cross-sectional area than the surface of the plunger opposed to the mold chamber and subject to contact with pressurized molding compound in the compound. The plunger member is longitudinally expansible and contractible so that even though one end may be rigidly mounted in the conduit, the enlarged sealing end is longitudinally movable to open and close the mold gate in a manner purely responsive to pressures therein. Thus, spontaneous gating of a mold may be provided.
Abstract: This invention relates to a valve gated injection molding system of the type where the melt passage enters the system on general alignment with the valve pin and cavity. The system has a novel valve pin actuating mechanism which is pneumatically operated according to a predetermined timed cycle. A piston which reciprocates in a cylinder has an outer collar portion from which a tongue portion extends inwardly to operatively engage the driven end of the valve pin. The melt passage extends through a portion of the back plate which, in turn, extends through the outer collar portion of the piston and is offset to leave room for the tongue portion of the piston to engage the driven end of the valve pin. Piston rings are located between the piston, back plate and cylinder to prevent excessive air leakage. This center entry system with a pneumatic actuating mechanism provides a more reliable mechanism which may be double acting.
Abstract: A vacuum forming mold for reshaping sheets of thermoplastic material is provided with means to impart indicia to the articles produced. Such indicia can be molded into the article by providing interchangeable members which are insertable and removeable from the mold. By arranging the members in different combinations any desired numbering can be obtained.
Abstract: A molding apparatus for molding a recorded disc includes a pair of mold plates adapted to form a mold cavity therein and a center hole forming pin slidably mounted in one of the mold plates. The center hole forming pin is larger in diameter than the hole to be formed and has a projection on its end which is of a diameter equal to the hole to be formed and a length about one-half the length of the hole to be formed. The other mold plate includes a projection extending therefrom of a diameter equal to the diameter of the hole to be formed and a length one-half the length of the hole. In the molding of the disc the projection on the center hole forming pin engages the projection on the other mold plate to form a hole in which a flash is spaced from the edges of the hole.

Abstract: An injection molding machine comprises an injection mechanism for heating and melting molding material and for injecting the molten material into cavities defined by a fixed die and a movable die and a die clamping mechanism for clamping and separating the fixed die and movable die. The fixed die is attached to a fixed platen provided near the injection mechanism and the movable die is attached to a movable platen provided near the die clamping mechanism. The die clamping mechanism is movable in a horizontal direction. A slider is provided on said movable platen and can reciprocably slide in a horizontal direction different from the direction in which the die clamping mechanism moves, and the aforesaid movable die and another movable die are attached to the slider so as to alternately come into face-to-face relation with the fixed die as the slider reciprocates.
Abstract: The invention relates to an injection mechanism for molding plastics, comprising at least one injection bushing, at least one lower needle valve, which is supplied by the injection bushing with molten plastics and opened by the pressure of the molten plastics during injection, further comprising heating means and cooling means adjacent to the flow path of the plastics, control means for maintaining the plastics at an adjusted temperature, further control means for injecting the molten plastics into at least one mold cavity via a corresponding injection aperture, and for the closing off the mold cavity after finishing the injection, wherein for improving this mechanism, especially for facilitating very small distances between injection openings, only one plunger within a heated distributor block is provided, which actuates several needle valves, situated at different locations within the distributor block, for supplying the molten plastics to the mold cavity via one single injection bushing, an injection nozzl
Abstract: A concrete mould employs resilient side shuttering, made of rubber for example, which is prevented from deflecting, when concrete is poured, by tensioning wires extending along the length of the shuttering. Pieces of the shuttering, forming the sides of a casting box, extend between fixed end plates having a series of holes to receive the tensioning wires for adjusting the modular width of panels cast in the box. A series of apertures is provided in each piece of side shuttering so that pneumatic core formers can be inserted through aligned apertures so as to extend across the casting box. Different types of joint formers, either fully or partly resilient, can be located about the core formers, each joint former having a series of grooves to receive reinforcement or tensioning wires or rods. When inflated the pneumatic core former locks the joint formers in place. Opening formers can be made from the shuttering and the joint formers.
Abstract: An injection-molding apparatus has a nozzle extending along an axis and formed with an axially forwardly opening outlet, an annular port fixed immediately axially behind or upstream of the outlet, and a central axially forwardly opening port axially fixed behind the annular outlet. Respective plastifiers for feeding respective plastified synthetic resins, normally thermoplastics, are connected to the respective ports. An axially displaceable valve body in the nozzle is displaceable from a fully forward position blocking both of the ports, through a partially back position blocking only the central port, to a fully back position clear of both of the ports. Thus in the fully forward position no resin can enter the nozzle, in the partially back position resin can enter the nozzle only from the annular port, and in the fully back position resins can enter the nozzle through both of the ports.
Abstract: Disclosed herein are a method and apparatus for opening molds by automatically unlocking a pair of locking mechanisms which cooperate to lock a pair of mold sections together. There are also disclosed herein a method and apparatus for handling a removed mold section and an article ejected from another mold section.
Abstract: A plastic bucket having a lip which defines means for engaging a bucket lid in sealing relation. The interior wall of the bucket defines an annular, inwardly projecting ridge spaced from the lip. The ridge extends around the inner circumference of the bucket, and defines an annular, inwardly pointed apex, to provide increased hoop strength to the bucket adjacent to its mouth and to provide an internal brush wiping member within the bucket.
Abstract: High density information discs, such as video discs, which have been treated with a fluorinating agent become resistant to and stable under conditions of high temperature and high relative humidity, even after exposure to such conditions for extended periods of time. The treatment with the fluorinating agent is accomplished by use of a bath of an aqueous solution of a "soft" fluorinating reagent, such as fluorosilicic acid or fluoroboric acid.

Abstract: A method and apparatus to close an end of a hollow thermoplastic tube is disclosed. The apparatus includes a female die with an interior shaped end in the configuration of the desired closed end of the tube. The shaped end of the die is heated to the softening point of the plastic. The portion of the die adjacent the shaped end is in contact with a heat sink to maintain that portion of the tube adjacent the closed end at a temperature at least 15.degree. F. below the softening point of the plastic to prevent deformation of the tube.
Abstract: A mechanical interlock mechanism for the safety cover of the die closing unit of an injection molding machine which has an arresting rod attached to the movable die carrier frame and extending rearwardly through a stationary cylinder head plate, where an arresting unit encloses a pair of arresting jaws with attached cam followers. The latter are engaged by a control rod which is connected to the safety cover by means of a control linkage. The jaws are forcibly closed, in opposition to jaw opening springs, and butting of the arresting jaw ridges against the arresting rod collars is limited to one jaw only, as a result of an axial offset between the arresting jaw ridges, in connection with a certain minimal pitch of the arresting rod collars and a floating arrangement of the jaw closing assembly. The latter is spring-biased towards one side.
Abstract: A hydraulic press having an upper ram-die subassembly is lowered hydraulically toward a mold cavity at a relatively high speed while resting by gravity on lower sets of nuts attached to the lower ends of piston rods. When the upper die comes to rest on the pulverulent material in the cavity, the piston rods continue their downward movement through passageways in the ram. At a predetermined distance sensed by a sensor on a set of upper nuts located on the rods above the ram cooperating with a switch on the ram itself, the ram continues downward at a much slower speed against the material with very high pressure for an initial stroke and then is retracted for additional strokes to "de-air" the powder (optional). Finally, after de-airing, the ram-die combination effects the final forming operation on the powder in the cavity.
Abstract: In order to maintain a vacuum at a plurality of molds on an assembly line, each mold has its own vacuum unit operating with compressed air and a plurality of molds are interconnected to supply compressed air in series to each of the molds.
Abstract: Heated material is injected into an annular cavity, defined by a pair of mold-halves, through a sprue passage, defined by a sprue bushing and an end portion of a punch. The annular cavity and the sprue passage form, respectively, the centrally apertured part and a sprue. After partial cooling of the heated material, the punch is locked in place while the annular cavity is displaced relative to the sprue passage so that the sprue is severed from the part along the peripheral surface of the punch end portion. The mold halves are separated to open the annular cavity while the sprue is resting on the punch end portion, and while the part is held by the punch end peripheral surface. After the mold halves are separated, a sprue ejector member and a part ejector member are actuated to eject, respectively, the sprue and the part from the punch end portion.
