Abstract: Racemic 2-(N-propylamino)-5-methoxytetralin is resolved by treating it with a chiral diaroyltartaric acid in an organic solvent at an elevated temperature to form a salt of the amine and chiral diaroyltartaric acid which is soluble in the solvent at the elevated temperature, cooling to precipitate the salt, isolating it, and converting it to the free amine. The product is useful as an intermediate in the synthesis of optionally-active pharmaceutical, such as N-0437.

Abstract: Undesirable odors are removed from fatty ester mixtures which, in addition to other components, contain the esters of highly unsaturated fatty acids, in particular of highly unsaturated 3-fatty acids, such as eicosapentaenoic acid or docosahexaenoic acid, by a process in which the fatty ester mixture is treated with a complex hydride, in particular with sodium borohydride solution. The process is particularly suitable for removing undesirable odors from fatty ester mixtures obtained from fish oil, for example by transesterification with an alkanol of 1 to 3 carbon atoms.
Abstract: There is disclosed a process for preparing sulfonyl acids from mercaptans in a single reactor. The mercaptan is converted to mercaptide and reacted with a lactone or lactam in an organic solvent which is removed after formation of a thioether containing acid. Water is provided as a solvent for the oxidation of the thioether to the sulfone. Mild conditions and readily available starting materials render the method capable of preparing such acids in large scale amounts.
Abstract: For the preparation of 3-hydroxy-3-methyl-glutaric acid a process is disclosed based on the direct oxidation with nitric acid of 3-methyl-1,3,5-pentanetriol.
Abstract: 3-substituted-4-hydroxy- and 4-acetoxystyrene compounds, especially 3,5-di(methyl, bromo or chloro)-4-acetoxystyrene as well as a process for its preparation. 2,6-dimethylphenol is acylated with acetic anhydride and HF catalyzed to produce 3,5-dimethyl-4-hydroxy-acetophenone. After subsequent esterification with acetic anhydride and catalyzed hydrogenation to form 1-(3',5'-dimethyl-4'-acetoxyphenyl)ethanol, this intermediate is then dehydrated with an acid and a polymerization inhibitor to produce 3,5-dimethyl-4-acetoxystyrene.

Abstract: Polyfunctional hexasubstituted benzene derivatives wherein at least three of the substituents are saturated carbon chains having from 1 to 21 carbon atoms and functional groups containing hetero functionalities at the ends of the carbon chains and the remainder of the 6 substituents are either saturated carbon chains containing from 1 to 21 carbon atoms or saturated carbon chains containing from 1 to 21 carbon atoms having a functional group including a hetero functional group containing N, O, S, P, or Si at the end of the chains. These derivatives are made by reacting a disubstituted alkyne wherein one or both of the substituents are saturated carbon chains having 1 to 21 carbon atoms to which hetero functional groups are attached with a palladium catalyst and isolating the resulting hexasubstituted benzene derivative.

Abstract: Edible fats and oils are extracted from oil-bearing materials by loading the raw materials onto an inlet end of a flat and fixed conveying surface having elongate slits therein. The materials are conveyed from the inlet end to the outlet end of the conveying surface by scrapers moved by endless chains. Oil extracting solvent is sprayed onto the material on the conveying surface, to produce miscella, which flows through the slits in the surface and into hoppers beneath the surface. The miscella is circulated back to additional sprayers located upstream of the solvent sprayers for spraying the miscella onto the upstream end of the conveying surface. The resulting concentrated miscella is collected in hoppers beneath the surface and delivered to a further use.
Abstract: Citrate esters are formed utilizing organic titanates as a catalyst allowing excess alcohol to be removed. Four citrate esters have been found which provide advantageous plasticizing properties to PVC compositions which include superior toxicity test results and superior soapy water extraction test results. The four citrate esters are: acetyltri-n-hexyl citrate, n-butyryltri-n-hexyl citrate, acetyltri-n-(hexyl/octyl/decyl) citrate, and acetyltri-n-(octyl/decyl) citrate. Articles formed from the PVC plasticized mixtures are extremely useful in the medical or health care field as they demonstrate a low order of toxicity.
