Abstract: A method for compact encoding including providing a first value field allocated in a first portion of a memory, wherein a portion of the first value field is utilized to store a fixed-size variable. A most significant zero bit (MSZB) is located in the first value field, and it is determined if the fixed-size variable can be written in a first area without performing an erase operation. The first area includes the N bits following the MSZB in the first value field. The fixed-size variable is written into the first area if the fixed-size variable can be written without performing the erase operation.

Abstract: An image-record subject is identified for a plurality of image records in an image collection. Then, a sampling change-metric related to a changing characteristic of the image-record subject is identified, and sampling of at least a portion of the image collection occurs at least according to the sampling change-metric to obtain one or more image records for the subset. Information pertaining to results of the sampling step is stored in a computer-accessible memory system.

Abstract: The present invention has an objective of realizing compatibility of an optical disk having a high resolution video signal recorded thereon and a system for reproducing the optical disk, with a conventional system for producing a standard resolution video signal. A high resolution video signal is divided by video division means into a main signal and a sub signal, and the main signal and the sub signal are MPEG-encoded. The stream of the main signal and the stream of the sub signal are divided into 1 GOP or more of frames. First interleave blocks 54 each including 1 GOP or more of the stream of the main signal and second interleave blocks 55 each including 1 GOP or more of the stream of the sub signal are recorded on an optical disk 1. A high resolution reproduction apparatus reproduces both the first and second interleave blocks to obtain a high resolution video output.

Abstract: The claimed subject matter provides systems and/or techniques that effectuate combining domain-tuned search systems. The system can include mechanisms that obtain queries, written descriptions, or illustrative web-pages regarding a particular area of interest, and generate a definition related to the area of interest. The definition contains a list of paths with associated weights employed to identify an pre-established first domain-tuned search system related to the area of interest. The first domain-tuned search system thereafter can be combined with a second domain-tuned search system related to another area of interest and presented to a user for utilization in re-ranking generic search results to be specific to the first and second domains of interest if combined, or to only the first domain if weights for the second domain are logically subtracted.

Abstract: Embodiments of the invention provide techniques for providing information describing locations to users of an immersive virtual environment. In one embodiment, patterns of locations visited by various users of the virtual environment may be stored in a searchable data structure(s). Further, characteristics of the location visits may be used to determine whether a given location visit was favorable for each user. Subsequently, locations visited by a current user may be matched to one of the stored patterns of locations. The matching pattern may then be used to provide favorability information describing other locations available to the current user. The favorability information may be presented to the user as graphical indications visible within the user's view of the virtual environment.

Abstract: A video tape indexing system in which program broadcast identification information is entered into the system for use in recording the program. When the program is recorded, the system stores indexing information in an index memory. The system monitors a broadcast channel for electronic program guide information that includes titles and usually channel, date, time and length for the titles. The system matches the channel, date, time and length information from the broadcast channel with the identification information entered for the program to be recorded. The title in the broadcast channel associated with the channel, date, time and length information is then associated with the indexing information for the program.

Abstract: Synonyms for a term to be indexed are dynamically generated by applying one or more rules (e.g., splitting, deletion or addition of characters, and concatenation of portions) to the term, each synonym generated either including only a portion and not all of the term or differing from the term by at least one additional character in a position between a first character and a last character (i.e., not at either end of the term). The term and some or all of the synonyms are then indexed for subsequent searching.

Abstract: A method and system for selecting a healthcare provider includes a process for selecting a healthcare provider whereby healthcare provider list data is obtained, along with various data regarding the healthcare providers on the healthcare provider list, and the data is stored in a healthcare provider database. When a healthcare consumer initiates a healthcare provider search request, one or more healthcare consumer criteria for acceptable/desired healthcare providers and/or healthcare services needed is obtained and used to search the healthcare provider database to identify one or more healthcare providers most closely meeting the healthcare consumer's criteria. The availability of appointments and/or estimated wait times for the identified one or more healthcare providers are then obtained.

Abstract: A distributed computing system provides a data management system in communication with a software management system and enables the software applications to move to the data to be processed in a distributed computing environment. The software management system stores a plurality of computer-executable software applications thereon and is in communication with a user system for receiving a selection of one of the plurality of software applications. The software management system generates an identifier for the selected software application which is provided to the data management system, which then obtains the selected software application from the software management system based on the identifier. The obtained software application is then executed with data from a data storage system using resources from a resource system. The resource system includes a plurality of resources and a manage mechanism for managing assignment of the plurality of resources to support execution of the software application.

Abstract: Estimating a recovery time for a data asset is provided. A request is received to project a recovery time for a data asset that uses a repository. A determination is made as to whether there are one or more existing recovery times for other data assets and other repositories that have characteristics similar to the data asset and the repository of the request. The recovery time for the data asset is projected using the one or more existing recovery times in response to an existence of the one or more existing recovery times.

Abstract: This invention provides a method for creating, updating, and recording information for seamless presentation of moving picture data in a rewritable recording medium. When recording moving picture data on a rewritable recording medium, seamless presentation information, a part of navigation data, is recorded along with the picture data for seamless presentation of the recorded picture data. The method for creating and recording seamless presentation information of the present invention can effectively reduce the amount of created seamless presentation information by omitting some fields of the seamless presentation information when they are unnecessary. If some video objects of recorded picture data are erased, navigation data related to the removed video objects should be erased and seamless presentation information should also needs proper modification.

Abstract: When storing data (D1), spread on a memory (10), into a file storage unit (50), a user ? assigns a meaningful filename-for-user, such as “sales book for April.” Storage control unit (35) converts this “sales book for April” to a meaningless filename-for-storage, such as “RST123.” The correspondence between the two is stored as filename correspondence information for user ? in a correspondence information storage unit (80). A storage processing unit (30) stores the data (D1) with the filename, “RST123.” Whereas when user ? is presented with a list of filenames of the stored files from a filename presentation unit (60), the meaningful filename of “sales book for April” is presented as the filename since a presentation control unit (65) performs reverse conversion of the filename based on the filename correspondence information, the meaningless filename of “RST123” is presented to other users. Security in regard to filenames can thus be secured and inference of the file contents can be prevented.

Abstract: Systems and methods for delivery of user profile data are disclosed. An exemplary method includes detecting a request for a full copy of a user profile data package maintained by a user profile data source subsystem, creating an illusion that the request has been fulfilled, and copying on demand a portion of the user profile data package from the source subsystem to a target location for access by a data consuming subsystem. In certain embodiments, the method further includes utilizing the copied portion of the user profile data package for execution of a computing operation, without fully copying the user profile data package from the source subsystem. In certain embodiments, the portion of the user profile data package is streamed from the source subsystem to the target location over a network connection.

Abstract: The present system provides a task manager that extracts information relating to tasks from a task oriented email. The system then integrates the task within the system by connecting the email programs, the task management programs, and a database, to automatically send emails and provide links to documents all related to completion of the task. Methods are provided that allow users of the system to efficiently interface with the system to complete and archive tasks.

Abstract: There is provided video switching circuitry for use in a KVM switch and similar devices. Video signal switching circuitry can supply video signals from a one of a plurality of video sources connected to the circuit to a display device connected to the circuit. The high data signalling rate signals are converted into a greater number of lower data signalling rate signals for switching by a bus architecture. Also provided are video display systems in which analogue and digital video signals are switched synchronously to allow them to be displayed on common or separate display devices. Also described is a high-resolution monitor digital video data switching device.

A dependency graph that represents an image composition is obtained. Metadata for each element of the dependency graph are stored in a database that is accessible across a network to multiple users. Access to the database is controlled to allow the multiple users to access the dependency graph via the database simultaneously.

Abstract: A video recording method used for a video recording apparatus which enables recording of both moving and still pictures on a recording medium, including: recording moving pictures encoded by a first encoding method, recording first still pictures encoded by a second encoding method which is different from the first encoding method, and recording second still pictures encoded by the first encoding method by which moving pictures are encoded, whereby a video reproducing apparatus enabled for decoding moving pictures encoded by the first encoding method, but which is not enabled for decoding still pictures encoded by the second encoding method, can decode the second still pictures recorded on the recording medium.

Abstract: Aspects for identifying stale contents in a file system include processing a set of attributes of each file in the file system. These aspects further also include determining access times at the directory level, recursively, from all the files in lower-level directories. The aspects further include identifying the highest-level stale directories in the file system.
