  • Patent number: 5122270
Abstract: A filter cartridge with a filter element inserted in a receiving space formed by a central cylindrical flow pipe 32 and a peripheral wall 34 is in terms of its possibilities of use and possibilities of adaptation to filtration problems substantially improved in that the filter element consists of fleece-like filter material and in that in its radial direction it comprises mutually enclosing zones of different filtering properties. For practical purposes, these zones can follow one another without any transition or they may be constructed with filtering properties which are varied in stepwise fashion. The filter element can be formed by the combination of a pleated filter fleece with a rolled-up filter fleece, the pleated part of the filter element being optionally on the inside or the outside.

  • Patent number: 5114596
Abstract: A method and apparatus for cleaning filter elements that are vertically positioned within a filter vessel that has a tube sheet dividing the filter vessel into a lower filter compartment and an upper plenum compartment. A fixed volume of backwash liquid is rapidly directed from the plenum compartment above the tube sheet through the filter elements into the filter compartment that has been drained of liquid. The rapid movement of the backwash liquid is a result of a pressure differential between the plenum compartment and the filter compartment. The volume of backwash liquid is maintained above the tube sheet by a pressurized condition in the filter compartment, which volume may be changed by adjusting the pressure in the filter compartment.

  • Patent number: 5114570
Abstract: A water filter cartridge has a cylindrical shell. A conduit runs between closing end walls and is disposed within a filtration material. There are additional openings in the respective end walls for communicating the flow of water through the material. A water filtration element of a porous medium is shaped to nest within a portion of the shell encircling a corresponding portion of the filtration material and defining space between the medium and the inner side wall of the shell with that space being in the water flow path from one of the end walls and the material through the medium. A reference color is exhibited over a portion of the exterior side wall of the shell adjacent to the location of the medium inside the shell, and the medium exhibits a given color upon beginning of usage but changes color with continued usage in response to its entrapment of matter in the water. The shell is transparent over the medium to enable the user to compare the medium color to the reference color.

  • Patent number: 5112503
Abstract: A modular filter assembly is described comprising a filter stack having a plurality of filter sheets and a plurality of filter support plates each having a perimeter and an internal filter flow passageway portion. The filter sheets are sandwiched between surrounding filter support plates forming the stack and the filter flow passageway portions of the plates and filter sheets are aligned to form a filter flow passageway extending from the top to the bottom of the stack. The filter stack has engaging means capable of keeping the filter support plates together while minimized top to bottom dimension because it is not necessary to use external clamps for keeping the support plates together. Also described are support plates for modular filters and a method for forming a modular filter assembly.

  • Patent number: 5108599
Abstract: A method for making a low pressure cartridge for liquid filtration, particularly of minerals from drinking water, comprises locating a pair of substantially identical end cap members telescopically on opposing ends of a tubular member. The end cap members are coupled to the tubular member mechanically by interference between four circumferential rings raised from an inner surface of each of the end caps and like numbers of circumferential grooves on a facing surface of the tubular member. O-rings between the telescoped members provide further fluid sealing and increased mechanical coupling, if desired. Different axial spacing between different adjoining pairs of rings assure axial alignment of the end caps with the tubular member during assembly.

  • Patent number: 5106506
Abstract: In a filter device with a filter stack (32) which is held in sealing position by two end plates (9, 2). At least one of which comprises fluid connections (3, 4, 5), and consists of round flat-filter elements (41) and alternatingly arranged, congruent, draining support elements (38), the end plate (2) comprising the fluid connections (3, 4, 5) is part of a housing (1, 2) surrounding the filter stack (32) and the peripheral approach flow of the filter stack (32) takes place via an annular housing space (11). The filter stack (32) is penetrated approximately in the direction of its diameter by a slot-like shaft (30, 30') for the fluid guidance of the retentate which shaft empties in the end plate (2) comprising the fluid connections (3, 4, 5). At least one permeate shaft (31) for removing the permeate from the plane of the filter elements (41) is arranged in the diametric end area of the stack surface. The permeate shafts (31) empty in the end plate (2) with connections (3, 4, 5).

  • Patent number: 5104538
Abstract: The invention is directed to a liquid strainer and a blank for forming the strainer. The strainer has a conical shape with an apex portion completely surrounded by a filtering cloth and folded from the blank to exclude any unfiltered passageway. The blank has the general shape of a disk truncated about two angularly spaced radial sides, the angle between the sides allowing for formation of a conical shape when the sides overlap. A circular aperture is partly carved at the intersection of the two sides, the remaining portion of the aperture is surrounded by a ring extending from the sides. The aperture is covered by a filtering cloth peripherally adhering to the blank and the ring. When the blank is folded, the ring forms and continuously extends from the latter. The filtering cloth which is glued to the ring completely closes any passageway through the folded cloth.

  • Patent number: 5104534
Abstract: The invention is a filter including a housing within which are positioned annular, concentrically mounted filter elements that are folded in opposite helical pleats so that the inside pleats of the outer filter element touch the outer pleats of the inner filter element in a crisscross fashion. Being positioned in this manner, the filter elements support each other and form channels between them through which filtered material passes before exiting the filter. The invention also including a housing within which is positioned pairs of annular filter elements consecutively numbered with capped ends for selective fluid passage between the inner surface of the odd elements and the outer surface of the even elements.
