  • Patent number: 5787560
Abstract: A numerically controlled lathe with a stationary headstock and a work spindle, mounted rotatably in the headstock, for holding a work in a first clamping includes a counter spindle for holding rotatably the workpiece in a second clamping. The lathe also has a tool turret, which can be indexed around an axis and which is mounted on a first slide, movable in two directions that are perpendicular to each other. This first slide also supports the counter spindle. A second tool holder is mounted next to the work spindle. The counter spindle and the tool turret are mounted on the first slide in mutually variable configuration; and the second tool holder is mounted on a second slide, which can be moved at least in a direction perpendicular to the work spindle axis. This second tool holder holds two groups of tools, one of which is mounted and designed for machining the work at the work spindle and the other is mounted and designed for machining the work at the counter spindle.

  • Patent number: 5788435
Abstract: First and second motors are provided for moving a workpiece support in an up and down direction and and for rotation about an axis. Third, fourth and fifth motors are provided for moving a rotating cutter in a lateral direction, for rotating the cutter about an axis, and for moving the cutter toward and away from a workpiece. A first conductive pin sensor senses workpiece parameters. A cutter motor rotates the cutter at constant speed, and a second sensor senses changes in cutter motor torque when the cutter comes into contact with a workpiece. A computer includes a memory for storing instructions for cutting a desired pattern, and the computer causes the first, second, third, fourth and fifth motors to vary the relative position of the cutter and workpiece support to cut a pattern in the workpiece.

  • Patent number: 5787559
Abstract: Generally trapezoidal web sections of non-uniform shape for fabricating structural I-section beams having varying bending modulus are cut from rectangular plate stock pieces by a shear whose platen is oscillated, as a series of pieces are cut from a length of metal sheet or plate, about an axis perpendicular to the plane of the stock material. The platen angle is determined and controlled by a computer to which design criteria are fed.

  • Patent number: 5781984
Abstract: The conductor end to be worked is clamped behind the conductor end section (5) to be stripped and is held in its axial position. Subsequently a scanning arrangement displaceable relative to the free end in longitudinal direction of the conductor end section (5) is used to determine the free end of this conductor end section (5), then the cutting knives (12, 13) are advanced into cutting contact with the conductor end section (5) by a distance (x) corresponding to the severing and/or insulation stripping length previously determined from the end position, and after cutting off the requested layer by means of cutting knives (12, 13) the latter are used to push the cut-off layer towards the end, and this cut-off and/or insulation stripping process can be repeated once or several times with graduated cutting depths, if need be.

  • Patent number: 5775188
Abstract: A portable facing head comprises a feed body portion in threaded engagement with lead screws that extend through the feed body. The lead screws are translated through the feed body by a worm gear enclosed within the feed body wherein the worm gear is rotated by action of a star feed. The star feed is rotated by contact with a cam member extending outwardly from a torque bar positioned adjacent the feed body such that upon rotation of the feed body about a rotational axis, the star feed is incrementally rotated by the cam member thereby effecting incremental rotation of the worm gear and incremental linear translation of the lead screws through the feed body. Directional movement of the lead screws through the feed body is selectively set at forward, reverse or zero during rotation of the feed body by manipulation of a torque arm handle to position the cam member.

  • Patent number: 5771561
Abstract: A multistation press has a three-axis transfer provided with transport rails onto which carrier rails are placed. The carrier rails carry grippers for the workpieces. During the tool change, the carrier rails are deposited on corresponding receiving devices of the sliding table. The transport rail is at first moved to deposit a first carrier rail connected therewith on the receiving device. Then the transport rail is separated from the carrier rail and is moved to bring a second carrier rail still connected therewith to the receiving device. The receiving device receives the second carrier rail in the immediate vicinity of the first carrier rail, whereby two carrier rails overlap and are spaced closely side-by-side. The receiving device is then laterally swivelled away. The carrier rails are deposited on the receiving device without the aid of driving devices operating between the transport rail and the carrier rail.

  • Patent number: 5772368
Abstract: A universal tilt base accommodates general-purpose router motor housings with diameters of 3-1/2 inches and larger. The motor housing is received by a collar tiltingly attached to a table base with an aperture, so that when a cutting bit attached to the router motor, the bit protrudes through the aperture to effect a workpiece, with means to independently adjust both the depth and tilt angle of the cutting bit. In the preferred embodiment, the collar is configured to accommodate router motor housings which either slide without rotation to adjust cutting depth and those which may be rotated during depth adjustment. To accommodate at least two of the types which do not rotate during depth adjustment, the collar is configured to receive motor housings having an at least one outward protrusion.
