Abstract: Weakly basic ethylenically unsaturated polymerizable monomers and polymers have been prepared. The monomers are represented by the structure (I): ##STR1## wherein R is hydrogen or methyl, and R.sup.1 is alkylene of 1 to 3 carbon atoms. The resulting polymers are water-soluble and cationic at acidic pH, but water-insoluble and neutral in charge at basic pH. The polymers are useful for precipitating nucleic acids.

Abstract: Broadly, the present invention is directed to a pressure sensitive adhesive that possesses enhanced adhesion to low surface energy substrates. The inventive PSA comprises the free-radical polymerization reaction product prepared in the presence of a free-radical initiator and dispersed in organic solvent of between about 0.5% and 10%, by weight of the non-volatile solids of the reaction product, of an organic solvent soluble, high ethylene-containing polymer; and a mixture of ethylenically-unsaturated monomers. Such mixture of monomers comprises between 0% and not substantially above about 10%, by weight of the non-volatile solids of the reaction product, of an ethylenically-unsaturated carboxylic acid or anhydride; and the balance being a non-carboxyl/non-anhydride-functional vinyl monomer or mixture of monomers. The T.sub.g of the polymerized mixture of monomers is not substantially above about -20.degree. C.
Abstract: A mixed bisimide having the formula: ##STR1## wherein D, A and Z are as defined in the specification, produced by reacting a diamine with an ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid anhydride and a halogenated compound containing an anhydride group and aromatic or bicyclo groups to form a bisamic acid composition and then dehydrating such composition to ring close the end groups. The halogenated end groups (Z) of the mixed bisimide component render the bisimide reaction product of the ring closing reaction flame retardant.
Abstract: A maleimide copolymer which consists essentially of greater than 28% by weight and less than or equal to 65% by weight of a maleimide monomer unit, greater than or equal to 16% by weight and less than 72% by weight of at least one monomer unit selected from the group consisting of aromatic vinyl compound monomer units and methacrylate monomer units, and 0-25% by weight of another vinyl compound monomer unit and which contains 0.1% by weight or less of the residual maleimide monomer and 0.5% by weight or less of volatile components other than the maleimide monomer and which has a ratio (Mw/Mn) of a weight average molecular weight Mw to a number average molecular weight Mn of 3 or less, a yellowness index of 30 or less and an intrinsic viscosity of from 0.3 to 1.5. The maleimide copolymer of the present invention is excellent in heat resistance, transparency, chemical resistance, impact resistance, moldability and the like.
Abstract: Polymeric and oligomeric bile acids are described which can be prepared by polymerization of monomeric bile acids of the formula IG--X--A (I)in which G, X and A have the given meanings or by copolymerization with a monomer of the formula IV ##STR1## in which R.sup.9 and R.sup.10 have the given meanings, or by copolymerization with N-vinylpyrrolidone or its derivatives,and/or by copolymerization with ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic anhydrides and ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acids each having 2 to 6 carbon atoms; their esters or half esters, alkyl esters having 1-6 carbon atoms, cycloalkyl esters having 5 to 8 carbon atoms, benzyl esters or phenyl esters being understood as esters. They can be used as pharmaceuticals, foodstuff additives, formulation auxiliaries and detergents.

Abstract: The invention relates to a thermoplastic polymer based on a vinyl monomer, which is characterized in that the polymer composition contains more than 1% (wt) of one or more compounds according to formula I and/or II: ##STR1## where R1 is a hydrogen atom, alkyl, aryl, cycloalkyl, cycloaryl and/or a halogen.By applying a polymer according to the invention the composition is protected against thermal decomposition so that the CO2 emission during or after processing is lower than 0.5% (wt). Polymers according to the invention are excellently suited for the production therefrom of dashboards for motor cars and of housings for electric equipment.

Abstract: The present invention provide water-soluble poylmers containing, as polymerized units: (a) from about 3 to about 95 percent by weight of one or more cyclohexene anhydrides or the alkali metal or ammonium salts thereof. Abstract: Novel fumaronitriles and dicyanophenanthrenes, for example, bis(4-fluorophenyl)fumaronitrile and 3,6-difluoro-9,10-dicyanophenanthrene which can be produced from the fumaronitrile, produce useful homopolymers and copolymers for high temperature applications; the homopolgymers and copolymers derived from the dicyanophenanthrenes can be converted to colored phthalocyanine group-containing polymers which are soluble in organic solvents and can be cast as films which may form the charge generating layer of an electrophotography device.
Abstract: The invention is in the field of intrinsically thermochromic material. We have found that infrared absorbing dyes of the azamethine type have intrinsically thermochromic properties. The use of said dyes as thermochromic material has the advantage that they can be thermally activated by infrared irradiation. Irradiation of such material with a laser causes a color change that can be used in imaging and optical data storage.The thermochromic dyes can be mixed with polymeric material and from the resulting polymer composition films can be made. If the dye contains polymerizable groups, it may be covalently incorporated into the polymer.

Abstract: A process is provided whereby radiation curable compositions comprising N-vinylformamide and an oligomer selected from the group consisting of epoxy-acrylate resins, polyester acrylate resins, polyurethane acrylate resins, acrylic acrylate resins, silicone acrylate resins, unsaturated polyester resins, maleate ester resins, vinyl ether resins and mixtures thereof are applied to the surface of a substrate and subsequently exposed to a radiation source until an adherent dry polymerized film is formed on the substrate. These compositions are useful for a wide range of applications including pigmented and unpigmented coatings, printing inks, adhesives and the like.
