  • Publication number: 20020027708
Abstract: A confocal microscope system that is inherently fiberoptic compatible is described which has line scanning aided image formation. An incoherent fiberoptic bundle maps a line illumination pattern into a dispersible group of separate sources, and then remaps this confocally selected remitted light to the original line. Fibers, not confocal with the illumination, carry light to be rejected from the image back on itself upon double passing, while separate fibers carry light from non-confocal sample planes. The transformation allows efficient rejection of unwanted photons at a slit aperture. The fiber bundle and an objective lens provide a flexible probe for imaging internal tissue for pathological examination on a cellular level.

  • Patent number: 5531818
Abstract: Disclosed is a thermal ink jet printing process which comprises (a) incorporating into a thermal ink jet printer an ink composition comprising water, a dye, and pigment particles having an average particle diameter of from about 0.001 micron to about 10 microns, said pigment particles being present in the ink in an amount of less than 0.1 percent by weight; and (b) causing droplets of the ink to be ejected in an imagewise pattern onto a recording medium by selectively heating the ink in the printer in an imagewise pattern, thereby generating images on the recording medium. The disclosed ink is capable of producing a large drop mass, high ink velocity, good directionality, and high quality images on plain papers with excellent long-term jetting stability.

  • Patent number: 5459570
Abstract: A method and apparatus for performing various optical measurements is provided utilizing an optical coherence domain refrectometer (OCDR). A short coherence optical radiation source applies optical radiation through like optical paths to a sample and an optical reflector. The optical reflector is movable in accordance with a predetermined velocity profile to permit interferometric scanning of the sample, the resulting output having a Doppler shift frequency modulation. This output may be demodulated and detected to obtain desired measurements and other information. Additional information may be obtained by applying radiation from two or more sources at different wavelengths to the sample and reflector and by separately demodulating the resulting outputs before processing.

  • Patent number: 5378648
Abstract: Capacitors such as storage cells for Dynamic Random Access Memories are formed in a process for etching a polycrystalline silicon layer to form a storage cell during the manufacture of a semiconductor device. The etch results in a cell having reduced undercutting of the poly cell, and eliminates the formation of poly stringers. The inventive etch comprises the use of NF.sub.3 and/or SF.sub.6 during a magnetically enhanced low pressure reactive ion etch using a carbon-free etch gas of Cl.sub.2.

  • Patent number: 5321501
Abstract: A method and apparatus for performing optical imaging on a sample wherein longitudinal scanning or positioning in the sample is provided by either varying relative optical path lengths for an optical path leading to the sample and to a reference reflector, or by varying an optical characteristic of the output from an optical source applied to the apparatus. Transverse scanning in one or two dimensions is provided on the sample by providing controlled relative movement between the sample and a probe module in such direction and/or by steering optical radiation in the probe module to a selected transverse position. The probe module may be an external module or may be an endoscope or angioscope utilized for scanning internal channels. Multiple optical paths may be provided for parallel scanning and focus may be enhanced by varying the focal point in the sample in synchronism with longitudinal scanning of the sample.

  • Patent number: 5178175
Abstract: A rain water collecting device for an umbrella includes a reservoir (6) with a closed end and an open end. A diaphragm (10) is mounted in the reservoir (6) adjacent to the open end to separate the reservoir (6) into a first compartment (62) and a second compartment (64). A receiving member (5) is mounted in the center of the diaphragm (10) and extends into the first compartment (62) for removably receiving a tip of the umbrella. A first coil tube (8) mounted in the first compartment (62) has a inlet (3) located at the diaphragm (5) and an outlet (4) in the first compartment (62). A second coil tube (9) mounted in the second compartment (64) has an inlet (1) located at the diaphragm (5) and an outlet (2) in the second compartment (64). When the umbrella is folded after use, the rain water is guided into the first compartment (62) via the first coil tube (8).

  • Patent number: 4970723
Abstract: A single international standard integrated services digital network (ISDN), basic rate interface (BRI) is arranged so that either a data terminal and two voice terminals, three voice terminals, or four voice terminals can be operated simultaneously through the interface. Code converters, associated with the voice terminals and with a central office switch, convert eight-bit voice sample code from either the voice terminals or the central office switch to four-bit voice sample code in the interface to enable the bit streams of two voice terminals to be merged for transmission through a single B-channel at the interface. When two voice terminals are operated simultaneously through one B-channel, each of those terminals positions four-bit coded voice samples in a different sub B-channel of the B-channel and stuffs four bits in the other sub B-channel.
