  • Publication number: 20160320814
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided that may be implemented for facilitating user modification of cooling device speed response to sensed temperature in information handling systems. The disclosed systems and methods may be implemented to allow an information handling system user to modify how one or more individual cooling device/s respond to device speed control values specified by stored device speed control information without requiring the user to change the identity or pre-defined device speed values of the device speed control information with which the information system is currently operating.

  • Publication number: 20160292078
Abstract: An information handling system a first controller and a solid state drive. The first controller receives an indication that a forced shutdown of the information handling system has been initiated, and triggers a cache flush command in response to receiving the indication that the forced shutdown has been initiated. The solid state drive includes a memory to store data, a cache to buffer data prior to writing the data in the memory, and a second controller. The second controller receives the cache flush command, and flushes the cache by writing the data in the cache to the memory in response to the cache flush command being received.

  • Publication number: 20160294197
Abstract: A portable information handling system manages battery charge to maintain a minimum level that supports boot by disconnecting the battery from a battery discharge path so that battery charge is lost substantially only to self-discharge. The battery automatically reconnects to the battery discharge path if external power becomes available to charge the battery. The minimum battery charge level provides adequate power in combination with the external power to support boot of the portable information handling system to an operational state. A power manager monitors power transition events to track power consumption information that a battery charge manager applies to modify the power transition events if external power and available battery charge are not sufficient to perform the power transition event without modification.

  • Publication number: 20150253830
Abstract: A system, method, and computer-readable medium are disclosed for detecting when a lower power adapter is coupled with an information handling system having higher power requirements. More specifically, in certain embodiments, a circuit (such as an embedded controller (EC)) detects an adapter wattage when an adapter plug-in is detected. If a lower wattage power adapter is detected (e.g., a 45 W power adapter), the embedded controller activates a signal (e.g., an AC_DISABLE signal) to stop powering the information handling system from the adapter. In certain embodiments, the information handling system is powered from a battery associated with the information handling system when the power adapter power capacity does not satisfy the power requirements of the information handling system. In certain embodiments, the circuit substantially simultaneously generates a low power warning. In certain embodiments, the adapter wattage may be detected via an adapter identifier (e.g.

  • Patent number: 7685477
Abstract: Information handling system errors are presented at a display with the information handling system graphics subsystem inoperative by communicating an identified error to the display through an auxiliary channel and generating a presentation of the error information with a microcontroller of the display. For example, errors determined by BIOS firmware running on a chipset are communicated through a DDC or I2C channel from the chipset to the display so that textual error messages are generated at the display without the use of the information handling system's graphic processor to generate an error message image.

  • Patent number: 7536569
Abstract: A portable information handling system having internal battery power and external adapter power manages power drawn from the external power adapter to avoid exceeding the power rating of the external power adapter. As power drawn from the external adapter approaches a predetermined limit of the power adapter power rating, a power manager of the information handling system alters the operation of the information handling system to reduce power drawn from the adapter, such as by reducing current drawn to charge the battery, enforcing battery optimized mode steps or throttling central processing unit operation. Incremental decreases in power consumption maintain power draw below the external adapter power rating while incremental increases in power consumption have a delay that returns the information handling system to normal operations without excessive oscillation between operating modes.

  • Patent number: 7380148
Abstract: An information handling system selectively boots to a normal operation mode having devices and applications configured to operate normally or a multimedia operation mode having devices and applications that support presentation of multimedia information enabled and other devices and applications disabled. In one embodiment, the multimedia mode improves portable information handling system multimedia performance by reducing power consumption to improve battery charge life and by reducing boot time to improve the timeliness of the user experience. For instance, a multimedia module interfaces with the operating system to disable power up of non-multimedia devices, such as networking devices, and non-multimedia applications, such as antivirus applications, while enabling multimedia devices, such as a DVD disc drive, to display multimedia information, such as a DVD movie.

  • Patent number: 7366923
Abstract: A portable information handling system (IHS) is provided. The portable IHS includes a processor and a memory device coupled to the processor. The memory device is for storing instructions processable by the processor for determining whether a lid of the portable IHS is closed. Also, the instructions are processable by the processor for, in response to determining that the lid of the portable IHS is closed, determining whether the portable IHS is operating within a substantially sealed case. Moreover, the instructions are processable by the processor for, in response to determining that the portable IHS is operating within a substantially sealed case, reducing the portable IHS power consumption.

  • Patent number: 7337338
Abstract: A method and system for allowing a processor to enter low power states in an information handling system (IHS) include detecting an access request for a bus mastering device. The method and system also include in response to failing to detect an access request for the bus mastering device within a period of time, suspending a bus mastering device controller associated with the bus mastering device, wherein the now suspended bus mastering controller no longer prevents the processor from entering low power states.

  • Patent number: 6573671
Abstract: A computer system or other electronic system includes a plurality of cooling fans configured to operate in parallel. The cooling fans are operated in a manner to decrease the operating time of a fan. The cooling fans can alternate in operation. Thus, operating time is more equally divided between the two cooling fans and the hours of operation and number of rotations of the fans is more nearly equal. In an embodiment to reduce noise, two fans run at a lower speed instead of one fan at a higher speed. In an embodiment, a fan operates with a reduced speed which maintains a desired operating temperature. In an embodiment a thermal table is stored in BIOS (basic/input output system).
