  • Patent number: 10355505
Abstract: A system, method, and computer-readable medium are disclosed for detecting when a lower power adapter is coupled with an information handling system having higher power requirements. More specifically, in certain embodiments, a circuit (such as an embedded controller (EC)) detects an adapter wattage when an adapter plug-in is detected. If a lower wattage power adapter is detected (e.g., a 45 W power adapter), the embedded controller activates a signal (e.g., an AC_DISABLE signal) to stop powering the information handling system from the adapter. In certain embodiments, the information handling system is powered from a battery associated with the information handling system when the power adapter power capacity does not satisfy the power requirements of the information handling system. In certain embodiments, the circuit substantially simultaneously generates a low power warning. In certain embodiments, the adapter wattage may be detected via an adapter identifier (e.g.

  • Patent number: 10303273
Abstract: In one or more embodiments, an information handling system may be communicatively coupled to a pointing device that communicates interaction data via a first bus via a first data format and may include a controller that receives the interaction data via the first bus and transforms the interaction data into a second data format and communicates the interaction data to a second bus via the second data format. If a status of a resource associated with the pointing device is queried, the controller may be instructed to cease transforming the interaction data from the pointing device, permitting another device to receive the interaction data and provide the interaction data to a processor of the information handling system. As the other device receives the interaction data and provides the interaction data to the processor, additional and/or full functionality of the pointing device may be realized and/or accomplished.

  • Patent number: 10268616
Abstract: Embodiments of systems and methods for selectively enabling and disabling protocols of a USB-C port are provided herein. According to one embodiment, a method for selectively enabling one or more protocols of a USB-C port on an information handling system (IHS) includes determining, upon system boot, if the IHS is connected via the USB-C port to a peripheral device that is authorized for use with the information handling system. If the peripheral device is not authorized for use with the IHS, the method may disable all protocols of the USB-C port. If the peripheral device is authorized for use with the IHS, the method may enable one or more protocols of the USB-C port.

  • Patent number: 10228750
Abstract: Systems and methods for reducing the power consumption of an Information Handling System (IHS). In some embodiments, an IHS may be configured to: in response to a request to operate in static display mode: (a) render static content on a display, (b) allow the processor to enter standby by notifying an OS that the display is off while keeping the display on, and (c) maintain the display refreshed with the static content; while in static mode and in response to a command that requires updating the static content, wake up the processor and generate updated static content using the processor; and after generating the updated static content: render the updated static content on the display while the processor is awake, allow the processor to re-enter standby by notifying the OS that the display is off while keeping the display on, and maintain the display refreshed with the updated static content.

  • Patent number: 10228731
Abstract: A controller and methods for controlling a retractable keyboard are disclosed. The controller may control and monitor an extend operation of the retractable keyboard using a first pin, and control and monitor a retract operation of the retractable keyboard using a second pin. Open drain signaling may be used on the pins to allow control and monitoring through the same pin. To control and monitor the extend (or retract) operation using a single pin, the controller releases the voltage at the pin to a floating high state to activate the muscle wire to extend (or retract) the keyboard. During the operation, the controller checks the voltage state at the pin. If the voltage at the pin has been pulled to low by the closing of a limit switch, the controller determines that the extend (or retract) operation has completed and in response drives the pin to a low voltage state to deactivate the muscle wire.

  • Patent number: 10222872
Abstract: An information handling system integrated keyboard selectively retracts and extends keys based upon detected conditions, such as housing configuration, housing motion and end user indications. Extension and retraction shuttle plates motivated by actuator wires moves a sliding plate to extended and retracted positions that define the key positions. Nickel titanium alloy actuator wires shorten upon application of current to pull the shuttle plates to the extended or retracted positions that are maintained by a lock. Limit switches remove current at detection of a desired shuttle plate position. One or more controllers manage actuator wire operation based upon detected conditions and actuator wire temperature and electrical characteristics.

  • Publication number: 20180324162
Abstract: In one or more embodiments, one or more systems, methods, and/or processes may receive, independently of a processor of the information handling system (IHS), first credential management information and may modify, independently of the processor and based on the first credential management information, credential information stored via a secure object store of the IHS. For example, modifying the credential information may include modifying the credential information such that the IHS denies access to at least a portion of the IHS based on the credential information. In one instance, denying access to at least the portion of the IHS may include disabling at least one of password, biometric information associated with a user, and an encryption key. In another instance, denying access to at least the portion of the IHS may include remapping, independently of the processor, at least one human interface device.

  • Publication number: 20180307290
Abstract: Battery status information may be provided to an information handling system, such as a laptop computer, through the same cable as the power. The transfer of battery status information may be facilitated by a power delivery (PD) controller in the external battery that communicates with a power delivery (PD) controller in the laptop computer. One cable type that can support the transfer of battery status information is a Universal Serial Bus (USB) Type-C cable. Battery status information may be transferred as packetized data according to a vendor-defined messaging (VDM) protocol from the external battery to the laptop computer. An embedded controller within the laptop computer may decode the packets and report the battery status information to components within the laptop computer. The battery status may be accessed through application programming interfaces (APIs) by third-party applications or displayed through the operating system.

  • Publication number: 20180309321
Abstract: Operating parameters for an information handling system may be calculated based on known and desired power consumption to quickly limit the power consumption to a desired level. When the operating parameters are calculated the amount of time wasted transitioning from one power level to another power level may be reduced. A controller for the information handling system may determining that a current drawn from a power supply exceeds a threshold level for longer than a threshold duration, calculate a throttle rate for the processor based on the current drawn from the power supply and a target current level, and control the processor to operate based on the throttle rate to reduce the current drawn from the power supply to the target current level.

  • Publication number: 20180284846

  • Publication number: 20180284938
Abstract: An information handling system with a touchscreen is disclosed. When the operating system has not been loaded or a driver of the touchscreen is absent, an embedded controller of the information handling system receives and presents touch input information from the touchscreen to a host processor by emulating the touchscreen as a legacy PS2 device. After the operating system is loaded and a driver for the touchscreen is running, the legacy PS2 device emulation is terminated and touch input information from the touchscreen is presented through an I/O interface to the host processor and processed by the operating system.
