  • Patent number: 10063083
Abstract: An information handling system operating a BMU controller may include a rechargeable battery, a BMU controller to determine battery charge percentage value, a memory device for storage of an internal data record indicating a first power-on setting, and the controller operatively coupled to the memory memory device and the rechargeable battery. The controller executing machine-readable executable code instructions to determine that the main memory contains no internal data record indicating a first power-on event and to limit the voltage received by the rechargeable battery such that percentage value of the charge of the rechargeable battery does not exceed a set percentage value charge limit during storage and shipment of the information handling system.

  • Patent number: 10055325
Abstract: Systems and methods for providing a visual indication of cable connection status. A method may include determining whether an Information Handling System (IHS) has established data communications using one of a plurality of different types of protocols supported by a cable and providing, on the cable, a visual indication of the type of protocol being used and/or an amount of power delivered via the cable. A cable may include a plurality of conductors, a controller coupled to the plurality of conductors, and a plurality of LEDs coupled to the controller. The controller may: determine whether an IHS coupled to the cable has established data communication with another device via the cable using one of a plurality of different types of protocols supported by the cable; and provide a visual indication of the type of protocol being used in the data communication and/or power delivered via the cable.

  • Publication number: 20180232335
Abstract: A USB Type-C secondary data channel communication system includes a controller system coupled to a first USB Type-C connector. The controller system determines a second USB Type-C connector orientation when a second USB Type-C connector is connected to the first USB Type-C connector. The controller system then communicates with a connected system through a first data channel available through the second USB Type-C connector and determines that the connected system provides a second data channel mode. In response to determining the connected system provides the second data channel mode, the controller system uses the second USB Type-C connector orientation to configure the provisioning of first data through the first data channel and second data through a second data channel that is available through the second USB Type-C connector. Different data communications may then be provided to the connected system using the first and second data channels.

  • Publication number: 20180181213
Abstract: In one or more embodiments, an information handling system may include a pointing device that communicates interaction data via a first bus via a first data format and may include a controller that receives the interaction data via the first bus and transforms the interaction data into a second data format and communicates the interaction data to a second bus via the second data format. If a status of a resource associated with the pointing device is queried, the controller may be instructed to cease transforming the interaction data from the pointing device, permitting another device to receive the interaction data and provide the interaction data to a processor of the information handling system. As the other device receives the interaction data and provides the interaction data to the processor, additional and/or full functionality of the pointing device may be realized and/or accomplished.

  • Publication number: 20180120922
Abstract: Systems and methods for reducing the power consumption of an Information Handling System (IHS). In some embodiments, an IHS may be configured to: in response to a request to operate in static display mode: (a) render static content on a display, (b) allow the processor to enter standby by notifying an OS that the display is off while keeping the display on, and (c) maintain the display refreshed with the static content; while in static mode and in response to a command that requires updating the static content, wake up the processor and generate updated static content using the processor; and after generating the updated static content: render the updated static content on the display while the processor is awake, allow the processor to re-enter standby by notifying the OS that the display is off while keeping the display on, and maintain the display refreshed with the updated static content.

  • Patent number: 9952636
Abstract: Systems and methods are provided that may be implemented for facilitating user modification of cooling device speed response to sensed temperature in information handling systems. The disclosed systems and methods may be implemented to allow an information handling system user to modify how one or more individual cooling device/s respond to device speed control values specified by stored device speed control information without requiring the user to change the identity or pre-defined device speed values of the device speed control information with which the information system is currently operating.

  • Patent number: 9916021
Abstract: An information handling system having a precision touch pad (PTP) touch input device interfaced through a multi-drop serial link with a processor sends information passing through the serial link to an embedded controller. The embedded controller translates the PTP information into legacy PS2 touch device inputs and forwards the inputs to the processor to provide touch inputs during states in which the processor cannot process information provided through the PTP serial link, such as when the operating system is not active or does not have native support for PTP.

  • Patent number: 9891846
Abstract: An information handling system a first controller and a solid state drive. The first controller receives an indication that a forced shutdown of the information handling system has been initiated, and triggers a cache flush command in response to receiving the indication that the forced shutdown has been initiated. The solid state drive includes a memory to store data, a cache to buffer data prior to writing the data in the memory, and a second controller. The second controller receives the cache flush command, and flushes the cache by writing the data in the cache to the memory in response to the cache flush command being received.

  • Patent number: 9748787
Abstract: A portable information handling system manages battery charge to maintain a minimum level that supports boot by disconnecting the battery from a battery discharge path so that battery charge is lost substantially only to self-discharge. The battery automatically reconnects to the battery discharge path if external power becomes available to charge the battery. The minimum battery charge level provides adequate power in combination with the external power to support boot of the portable information handling system to an operational state. A power manager monitors power transition events to track power consumption information that a battery charge manager applies to modify the power transition events if external power and available battery charge are not sufficient to perform the power transition event without modification.

  • Publication number: 20170220087
Abstract: An information handling system receives power from plural power sources by managing bi-directional power transfer at plural cable ports to maintain matched impedance across plural power sources. A power manager of an information handling system exchanges power characteristics with the plural power sources to coordinate power transfer in proportion to current capability of the power sources so that voltage droop at the different external power sources remains the same during variable power draws.

  • Patent number: 9697717
Abstract: A power adapter warning system includes a computing device that has a display screen and that is coupled to a power adapter device and at least one peripheral device. The computing device initializes and, in response, detects the power adapter device. The computing device then determines that the power adapter device does not provide sufficient power to complete a boot process and, in response, prevents power from being provided to the peripheral device(s). The computing device then performs the boot process such that the display screen is available for displaying information, and provides a power adapter warning message for display on the display screen. The peripheral device(s) may be connected to the computing device via USB connectors, and power may be disabled to the USB connectors to allow the computing device to perform the boot process using power provided by the power adapter.
