  • Patent number: 5985198
Abstract: A method for manufacturing a film-coated article by the following steps. A pre-molded film having a backing surface and a decorative surface is formed in the shape of the molded article. The film includes an opening that allows the molted plastic to pass through the film. The film is placed within a mold press having a mold with a cavity surface and a movable core. The mold includes an resin inlet with an inlet surface. The film is placed on the mold with the decorative surface juxtaposed the mold. The opening on the film overlies the resin inlet. The mold is closed and the film held securely in place against the inlet surface. A molten plastic material is injected through the resin inlet. The plastic material passes through the film and fuses to the backing surface. After the article has cooled, the press is opened. The molded article is retained on the core and removed from the press.

  • Patent number: 5972279
Abstract: A method and apparatus for transferring a pre-molded film into a cavity by the following steps. A robotically controlled arm having a loader receives flexible film. The loader by two moveable end portion and a main portion there between. The pre-molded film is transferred onto the loader. The end portions are retracted so that the loader is in a retracted position. The loader is moved to a position within a cavity. The cavity has an opening that is larger then the loader when the loader is in the retracted position. The film is transferred to the cavity by aligning the film with corresponding three-dimensional contours on the cavity. The edge portions are extended so that essentially the entire surface of the film contacts the cavity. The loader is withdrawn from the cavity by first retracting the end portions and removing the loader.

  • Patent number: 5833564
Abstract: A variable transmission mechanism, particularly for the automatic transmission of a vehicle, comprises a driven rotor (22) having windings to which a variable DC supply is fed, and an armature rotor (10) in electromagnetic cooperation with the driven rotor. The rotors are connected to an epicyclic gear train (14) which is also connected to an output shaft, the arrangement being such that an increase in power supply to the driven rotor increases the torque between the rotors and enables the speed of the output shaft to be increased.

  • Patent number: 5797783
Abstract: A balloon kit package is provided to facilitate erection of a balloon assembly in a desired manner so as to prevent unintentional loss of buoyant balloons. The kit package includes an uninflated balloon, a placard greeting card or other object of mass sufficient of mass to overcome the buoyancy of the balloon when inflated and articles such as a ribbon for joining the balloon to the placard. In an alternative embodiment, the neck of the balloon is inserted directly into the placard. In package form the balloon kit is sealed in a plastic overwrap.

  • Patent number: 5785517
Abstract: A wall lining for a furnace (10) includes a refractory layer (14) having a hot face (16) exposed to the interior of the furnace. A plurality of elements of a high thermal conductivity material (18), such as copper wires or rods, extend from the outer shell (12) of the furnace into the refractory lining (14). The elements (18) provide a continuous heat conduction path to the outer shell (12) of the furnace. A cooling jacket (22) removes heat from the outer shell. The elements (18) are dispersed in the refractory lining (14) to provide a substantially uniform temperature across the hot face of the furnace in the vicinity of the elements. The wall lining may be formed by fixing an array of the elements to the inside wall of the outer shell of the furnace and applying a refractory material to the inside wall.
