A filtering unit can filter the inflow of liquid received by the liquid collection reservoir. A liquid chamber stores the liquid. Ultraviolet light emitting sources located about the liquid chamber irradiate the liquid in the liquid chamber with ultraviolet light. A control unit, operatively coupled to the ultraviolet light emitting sources, controls the irradiation of the liquid in the liquid chamber with the ultraviolet light emitting sources. The control unit is configured to control an intensity and a duration of the irradiation as a function of time that the liquid is stored in the liquid chamber and the amount of the liquid that is in the liquid chamber.

    Abstract: Aspects of the invention provide a system for disinfecting a humidifier containing a volume of water. An enclosure, such as a humidifier, includes a first chamber, a second chamber, a humidifier component, a third chamber, and a control unit. The first chamber contains a volume of water and a portion of the water flows into the second chamber. A first set of ultraviolet radiation sources within the first chamber can be configured to generate UV-A radiation, while a second set of ultraviolet radiation sources within the second chamber can be configured to generate UV-C radiation. In operation, the humidifier component adjacent to the second chamber creates water vapor using the portion of the volume of water within the second chamber. The water vapor flows into a third chamber that contains the water vapor and releases the water vapor into the ambient.

While the electronic device is within the ultraviolet absorbent case, ultraviolent radiation is directed at the electronic device. A monitoring and control system monitors a plurality of attributes for the electronic device, which can include: a frequency of usage for the device, a biological activity at a surface of the device, and a disinfection schedule history for the device. Furthermore, the monitoring and control system can detect whether the device is being used. Based on the monitoring, the monitoring and control system controls the ultraviolet radiation directed at the electronic device.

A sensor can detect the intensity of the fluorescence from the surface illuminated by the blue UV light source. A control module can be operatively coupled to the visible light source, the blue UV light source, and the at least one sensor, and be configured to change the intensity of the visible light and/or the intensity of the blue UV light as a function of the fluorescent intensity detected by the sensor.

    Abstract: A solution for treating a fluid, such as water, is provided. An ultraviolet transparency of a fluid can be determined before or as the fluid enters a disinfection chamber. In the disinfection chamber, the fluid can be irradiated by ultraviolet radiation to harm microorganisms that may be present in the fluid. One or more attributes of the disinfection chamber, fluid flow, and/or ultraviolet radiation can be adjusted based on the transparency to provide more efficient irradiation and/or higher disinfection rates. In addition, various attributes of the disinfection chamber, such as the position of the inlet(s) and outlet(s), the shape of the disinfection chamber, and other attributes of the disinfection chamber can be utilized to create a turbulent flow of the fluid within the disinfection chamber to promote mixing and improve uniform ultraviolet exposure.
