  • Publication number: 20050102343
Abstract: A technique for solving a set of wave equations in a region uses points arranged in a grid spanning the region or coefficients of wave expansion for objects located in the region. The grid points or the coefficients are partitioned into blocks on multiple levels, and block impedance matrices encoding the wave equations is derived for pairs of blocks. The block impedance matrix need not be calculated as it is written as the product of two non-square matrices, denoted U and V. Each of U and V have one linear dimension which is only of the order of the rank of the block impedance matrix levels. The rank is predetermined by coarse sampling. Two examples of the use of the invention are given: solving surface integral equations and Foldy Lax equations for partial waves.

  • Publication number: 20050094731
Abstract: A video encoding system and method utilizes a three-dimensional (3-D) wavelet transform and entropy coding that utilize motion information in a way to reduce the sensitivity to motion. In one implementation, the coding process initially estimates motion trajectories of pixels in a video object from frame to frame in a video sequence to account for motion of the video object throughout the frames. After motion estimation, a 3-D wavelet transform is applied in two parts. First, a temporal 1-D wavelet transform is applied to the corresponding pixels along the motion trajectories in a time direction. The temporal wavelet transform produces decomposed frames of temporal wavelet transforms, where the spatial correlation within each frame is well preserved. Second, a spatial 2-D wavelet transform is applied to all frames containing the temporal wavelet coefficients. The wavelet transforms produce coefficients within different sub-bands. The process then codes wavelet coefficients.

  • Publication number: 20050086998
Abstract: An oil gas separation membrane combines a gas permeable yet oil and temperature resistant bulk polymer membrane such as poly(tetrafluoroethylene) and poly(tetrafluoroethylene-co-hexafluoropropylene); a porous metal support such as sintered metal frit disk made with stainless steel, bronze or nickel; and an highly gas permeable adhesive that bonds firmly the bulk polymer membrane and the metal frit surface together. The adhesive is either a homogenous polymer that has desirable gas permeability, or a coalescent porous polymer particulates network. A gas sensor employing the oil gas separation membrane for detecting and monitoring fault gases of oil filled electrical equipment requires no mechanical wearing or moving part such as pump and valve and the gas sensor is operated normally under various temperature and pressure conditions.

  • Publication number: 20050089105
Abstract: A scalable layered video coding scheme that encodes video data frames into multiple layers, including a base layer of comparatively low quality video and multiple enhancement layers of increasingly higher quality video, adds error resilience to the enhancement layer. Unique resynchronization marks are inserted into the enhancement layer bitstream in headers associated with each video packet, headers associated with each bit plane, and headers associated with each video-of-plane (VOP) segment. Following transmission of the enhancement layer bitstream, the decoder tries to detect errors in the packets. Upon detection, the decoder seeks forward in the bitstream for the next known resynchronization mark. Once this mark is found, the decoder is able to begin decoding the next video packet. With the addition of many resynchronization marks within each frame, the decoder can recover very quickly and with minimal data loss in the event of a packet loss or channel error in the received enhancement layer bitstream.

  • Publication number: 20050083153
Abstract: Wire bonds connect current-carrying edges of high-frequency planar conductors to other electrical devices. In one embodiment, planar transmission lines are interconnected using two wire bonds. One bond wire extends from an edge of a first center conductor to a corresponding edge of a second center conductor, and a second bond wire extends from the other edge of the first center conductor to the other edge of the second center conductor. Embodiments include center conductors at different heights and having different widths, and different electrical devices, such as semiconductor integrated circuits. In a particular embodiment, ball bonding is used. In some embodiments, a tack bond is included after a ball bond to allow closer attachment of the bond wire to the edge of the conductor.

  • Patent number: 6881729
Abstract: Novel compounds isolated from the bile of male sea lampreys are described, in particular, 7?,12?,24-trihydroxy-5?-cholan-3-one-24-sulfate and 7?,12?-dihydroxy-5?-cholan-3-one-24-oic acid and an ELISA for detecting the compounds. The bile compounds act as pheromones which attract female sea lampreys in water to the point in the water where the compounds had been introduced. The bile compounds are useful in lamprey population management programs where it is desirable to control the locomotion and distribution of lampreys and in food operations where it enhances the efficiency of catching lampreys for food.

  • Publication number: 20050079712
Abstract: A method for bonding at low or room temperature includes steps of surface cleaning and activation by cleaning or etching. One etching process The method may also include removing by-products of interface polymerization to prevent a reverse polymerization reaction to allow room temperature chemical bonding of materials such as silicon, silicon nitride and SiO2. The surfaces to be bonded are polished to a high degree of smoothness and planarity. VSE may use reactive ion etching or wet etching to slightly etch the surfaces being bonded. The surface roughness and planarity are not degraded and may be enhanced by the VSE process. The etched surfaces may be rinsed in solutions such as ammonium hydroxide or ammonium fluoride to promote the formation of desired bonding species on the surfaces.

In one implementation, the coding process initially estimates motion trajectories of pixels in a video object from frame to frame in a video sequence to account for motion of the video object throughout the frames. • Publication number: 20050069633
Abstract: A method is presented for controlling process delay times between a) thin film deposition and lubricant application, and b) lubricant application and abrasive polishing. Applicants have discovered that for certain lubricants, a minimum delay time after the overcoat has been deposited before the lubricant is applied increases the number of disks passing the glide test after abrasive polishing. In addition, applicants have discovered that for certain lubricants, the abrasive polishing should take place within a maximum time window following the application of the lubricant. A computerized work-in-progress tracking system is preferably used to implement the method of the invention.
