The azo dye of formula (II) is nonmutagenic, has good solubility properties in the usual dye carriers, and imparts to hair hues which are stable, particularly to washing. The invention also relates to a process for dyeing human hair by direct coloration which comprises applying the dyeing composition defined above onto the hair, leaving it on the hair for 3 to 60 minutes and then rinsing and drying the hair.
