Publication number: 20240031560Abstract: In one implementation, when coding a block in the intra prediction mode, the block can be split into two sub-partitions by a geometrically located straight line. Each geometric partition within the CU is intra predicted using its own intra mode with its available reference sample. One sub-partition copies and uses the intra prediction mode from the parent block, and another sub-partition uses another implicit or explicit signaled intra prediction mode. After predicting geometric partition, the sample values along the split boundary are adjusted using a blending process with adaptive weights. The geometric partition based intra prediction could be applied for one angular intra prediction mode, or only for one negative-directional intra prediction mode, or only for one specific intra prediction mode (e.g., mode 34). The transform selection or other intra coding tools (i.e., intra sub-partition) can be adapted for the geometric partition based intra prediction.Type: ApplicationFiled: November 10, 2021Publication date: January 25, 2024Inventors: Ya CHEN, Gagan Bihari RATH, Karam NASER, Antoine ROBERT

Patent number: 11750836Abstract: Methods and apparatus for creating additional affine candidates. Virtual and temporal candidates are determined using neighboring spatial and temporal sub-blocks. The sub-blocks are examined in an order known to both an encoder and a decoder. Valid sub-blocks are used to compute an affine model. The candidates can be filtered and added to a candidate list conditionally based on various criteria. The candidates can be used to determine control point motion vectors and a motion flow field can be determined. Motion vectors for sub-blocks within a video coding block can be determined. Motion compensation can be performed using the improved affine candidates and encoding/decoding based on the improved affine motion compensation.Type: GrantFiled: September 12, 2019Date of Patent: September 5, 2023Assignee: INTERDIGITAL VC HOLDINGS, INC.Inventors: Franck Galpin, Antoine Robert, Fabrice Leleannec

Publication number: 20230262268Abstract: In a video coding system, it is proposed to transmit only a luma quantization matrix and no chroma quantization matrix when the chroma format is monochrome, and otherwise (i.e. not monochrome) to transmit at least both a luma quantization matrix and a chroma quantization matrix. This allows to avoid the transmission of data elements that are useless. It allows to improve simultaneously the encoding (less operations to perform), the transmission (less data to be transmitted) and decoding (less operations to perform).Type: ApplicationFiled: June 23, 2020Publication date: August 17, 2023Inventors: Philippe De Lagrange, Phillippe Bordes, Franck Galpin, Antoine Robert

Publication number: 20230131933Abstract: Video signal coding and decoding functions can generate lists of potential candidates to use in coding and decoding, for example, predictors. Video signal coding component candidate undergo operations before potential inclusion in candidate lists. The candidates are checked after being modified by the operations to see if other equal candidates are already in the candidate list. If equal candidates are not in the list, the modified candidates are added to the candidate list. If equal candidates are already in the list, the modified candidates are not added to the list.
