  • Patent number: 12677000
Abstract: An apparatus for encoding or decoding blocks of a current picture encodes sub-blocks of a first block of a current picture. The sub-blocks encoded or decoded based on motion vectors determined according a motion information data associated with the first block. In a second step, a set of second motion information data is determined as a function of the first motion information data. These second motion information data are added to a list of motion information data, that is used to determine a motion information data for further blocks of the current picture to encode or decode.

  • Patent number: 12671832
Abstract: A decoding method is disclosed. A flag is first decoded. The flag indicates whether a current block of a picture is decoded with a tool of a set of tools. The set of tools comprises tools using reconstructed samples of neighboring blocks decoded prior to the current block or using a block of the picture larger than a hardware unit. The flag is only decoded in the case where the current block has a parent hardware unit. A current block is then decoded responsive to the flag.

  • Patent number: 12666026
Abstract: In at least one embodiment, a method and apparatus for encoding/decoding a video is based on a CABAC coding of bins where a high-level constraint on the maximum usage of regular CABAC coding of bins is enforced. In other words, a budget of regular coded bins is allocated over a picture area that is larger than a coding group, thus covering a plurality of coding groups, and which is determined from an average allowed number of regular bins per unit of area.

  • Publication number: 20260164055
Abstract: A video encoder or decoder processes portions of video with less delay when its processes are parallelized and avoids delays caused by dependence on the completion of prior processes. In one embodiment, a motion vector predictor from a neighboring block of video is used in a subsequent later block of video before it is finished being refined for use in the neighboring block. In another embodiment, information from a neighboring block is confined to include blocks in the same coding tree unit. In another embodiment, a motion vector predictor is checked to see whether it is already in a list of candidates before adding it to the list to expedite the process.

  • Patent number: 12615362
Abstract: Some series of ABT split are normatively forbidden in order to limit the number of allowed series of splits, in a way that refines the trade-offs between the amount of allowed split series and the compression efficiency. In particular, a reduced combinatory in terms of allowed split series leads to reduced encoder-side complexity, in the rate distortion search for the best block partitioning. The normative split restrictions provide that when successively using horizontal or vertical then vertical or horizontal asymmetric splits, the considered succession of two splits leads to isolating the sub-area of the input block that is three-fourths the size of the parent block in width and height. Additional embodiments condition allowed splits on transform size, block size, and temporal layer of the slice and slice type.

  • Publication number: 20260107001
Abstract: A video coding system may use different types of templates when using template-based prediction modes such as intra template matching prediction mode. The ‘L-shape’ template conventionally used by template-based coding tools may be split into a horizontal ‘above’ (or ‘upper’) template and a vertical ‘left’ template. This allows the encoder to select the appropriate part of the template that better captures statistical properties of the current block and results into improving the coding performance. The use of the type of template is signaled in the encoded data so that the decoder can use the appropriate template for the reconstruction when using a template-based prediction mode such as intra template matching prediction mode.

  • Patent number: 12587672
Abstract: A method of predicting or inferring a piece of information for encoding or decoding uses a predictor from a spatial neighbor, or from a reference picture, instead of predicting or inferring the information, such as a flag for a current block, from a motion predictor block. This procedure can be used in several ways, or used in various motion vector prediction modes, such as Frame Rate Up Conversion or various variations of Advanced Motion Prediction. Other embodiments provide other methods and combinations to derive or infer motion information to increase coding efficiency.

  • Patent number: 12587640
Abstract: Systems, methods, and instrumentalities are disclosed for performing intra prediction of a luminance coding block and/or a chrominance coding block and related signaling when neural network-based intra prediction is enabled. For a current coding block, information representative of a neural network-based prediction mode and a block context may be obtained. A neural network-based predictor may be generated for the current coding block based on the block context and the neural network-based prediction mode. A non-neural network-based intra prediction mode that corresponds to the generated neural network-based predictor may be determined. A prediction mode for a neighboring block may be determined based on the non-neural network-based intra prediction mode.

  • Publication number: 20260059120
Abstract: Prediction of a boundary used in geometric prediction modes is accomplished with embodiments that remove a requirement of reconstruction of samples of the current block, which increases pipeline latency. In one embodiment, the best boundary is predicted and added as a candidate to a list. In another embodiment, the candidates are ranked according to their boundary fitting score and an index is signaled to select the correct candidate at a corresponding decoder. In another embodiment, the fitting of the boundary is computed using a metric along the boundary sub-block. In another embodiment, the fitting of the boundary is computed using a metric outside the boundary area.

  • Patent number: 12556683
Abstract: In a video coding system, it is proposed to improve the intra prediction based on intra-block copy by allowing a decoder-side refinement allowing further refinement of the block vector obtained from IBC using a template matching process. In this template matching, the decoder searches in an iterative process the best match for the current block (L-shaped) template within the reconstructed area, adjacent to the block vector determined using the IBC 10 prediction. This technique allows to obtain a finer precision that what is possible with IBC while minimizing the amount of coding information. In at least one embodiment where a coarse precision is used for IBC, it allows at the same time to benefit from significant coding gain provided by IBC while providing a much finer precision with reduced signaling of the block vector.

  • Publication number: 20260046391
Abstract: Systems, methods, and instrumentalities are disclosed for performing local illumination compensation (LIC) with multiple linear models. In an example, a device, such as a video decoding device, or a video encoding device, may determine that sub-partition-based local illumination compensation (sub-LIC) is enabled for a current block. The device may divide the current block into a plurality of sub-partitions. The device may identify a plurality of templates associated with the plurality of sub-partitions. The device may derive a plurality of local illumination compensation (LIC) parameter sets associated with the plurality of sub-partitions based on the plurality of templates associated with the plurality of sub-partitions. The device may process (e.g., encode and/or decode) the current block based on the plurality of LIC parameter sets.
