  • Publication number: 20210266586
Abstract: Different implementations are described; particularly implementations for video encoding and decoding using merge lists comprising history-based motion vector predictor candidates and averaged motion vector predictor candidates. The method comprises: determining for a current block of the picture one or more history-based motion vector predictor candidates using motion information of blocks preceding the current block; determining for the current block one or more averaged motion vector predictor candidates by averaging a pair of motion vector predictor candidates in a list of motion vector predictor candidates, wherein the motion vector predictor candidates in the list are formed using motion information of blocks spatially and/or temporally surrounding the current block; and inserting one or more of the averaged motion vector predictor candidates before one or more of the history-based motion vector predictor candidates in the list of motion vector predictor candidates.

  • Patent number: 11089298
Abstract: Video signal coding and decoding functions can generate lists of potential candidates to use in coding and decoding, for example, predictors. Video signal coding component candidates undergo operations before potential inclusion in candidate lists. The candidates are checked after being modified by the operations to see if other equal candidates are already in the candidate are added to the candidate list. If equal candidates are already in the list, the modified candidates are not added to the list. Operations that can be performed comprise rounding and clipping.

  • Patent number: 11070838
Abstract: Extra precision can be added to motion vectors, such as those obtained using advanced motion vector prediction or frame rate upconversion, to produce improved motion compensation. The increased precision from neighboring blocks are used to provide increased precision to a motion vector for a current block. In various embodiments, the derivation of the increased precision can be found through various methods. In other embodiments, refined motion vectors can be saved for use in subsequent predictions, and a rate distorion optimized selection can be performed for determining whether or not to use the refinement.

  • Publication number: 20210211650
Abstract: A video encoder or decoder processes portions of video using virtual temporal affine motion candidates. Under the general aspects, virtual temporal affine candidates are created using only the classical temporal motion buffer information, avoiding the storage of additional affine parameters in a temporal motion buffer. A motion field for encoding or decoding a video block is generated based on the virtual temporal affine candidates. In one embodiment, collocated motion candidates are rescaled by adjusting the picture order count of the determined motion field. In another embodiment, resolution adaptation is performed to enable a current motion buffer to correspond to a reference motion buffer.

  • Publication number: 20210195161
Abstract: Methods and apparatus enable video coding and decoding related to omnidirectional video, such as stereo omnidirectional video with equirectangular projections. For stereo images of a scene, the video image data is portioned, resampled and arranged so that portions representing both images are able to fit within a frame. A message is sent with the frame to describe either the resampling or arrangement information. In at least one embodiment, the resampling is done horizontally. In at least one embodiment, the message is sent within a Supplemental Enhancement Information message. Corresponding operations reverse the process at a decoder, enabling the two stereo images to be recreated.

  • Publication number: 20210136398
Abstract: A decoding method is disclosed. A flag is first decoded. The flag indicates whether a current block of a picture is decoded with a tool of a set of tools. The set of tools comprises tools using reconstructed samples of neighboring blocks decoded prior to the current block or using a block of the picture larger than a hardware unit. The flag is only decoded in the case where the current block has a parent hardware unit. A current block is then decoded responsive to the flag.

  • Publication number: 20210076058
Abstract: A video encoder or decoder processes portions of video with less delay when its processes are parallelized and avoids delays caused by dependence on the completion of prior processes. In one embodiment, a motion vector predictor from a neighboring block of video is used in a subsequent later block of video before it is finished being refined for use in the neighboring block. In another embodiment, information from a neighboring block is confined to include blocks in the same coding tree unit. In another embodiment, a motion vector predictor is checked to see whether it is already in a list of candidates before adding it to the list to expedite the process.

  • Patent number: 10911759
Abstract: A Frame Rate Up-Conversion (FRUC) derivation process, based on frame rate up-conversion techniques, is developed in the reference software JEM (Joint Exploration Model) by the Joint Video Exploration Team (JVET). In one embodiment, a modified FRUC derivation process improves the performance of the current FRUC tool is provided. For example, an initial list of motion vector candidates defined in the FRUC derivation process may be reordered, and/or one or more of the ordered motion vector candidates in the defined list may be removed to improve the efficiency of the process. The reordering and/or the removal may be based on, e.g., one or more of previously determined motion vector candidates of one or more previously decoded blocks. In addition, the adaptive reordering mode may be signaled by the encoder to the decoder as part of the modified FRUC derivation process.

  • Publication number: 20200413085
Abstract: A block of video data that is split into sub-blocks forms a prediction for that sub-block using predictions from neighboring sub-blocks such that a current prediction for the sub-block is combined with weighted versions of the neighboring predictions. The neighboring sub-blocks motion vectors are checked to determine whether they are different than the motion vector of the sub-block being predicted. If so, than that corresponding neighboring sub-block is used to generate the prediction of the current sub-block. In an embodiment, two lines or two columns of pixels within a sub-block are used in forming the prediction for the current sub-block when the size of the block containing the sub-block is under a particular size.

  • Publication number: 20200236390
Abstract: A method of predicting or inferring a piece of information for encoding or decoding uses a predictor from a spatial neighbor, or from a reference picture, instead of predicting or inferring the information, such as a flag for a current block, from a motion predictor block. This procedure can be used in several ways, or used in various motion vector prediction modes, such as Frame Rate Up Conversion or various variations of Advanced Motion Prediction. Other embodiments provide other methods and combinations to derive or infer motion information to increase coding efficiency.

  • Publication number: 20200221120
Abstract: Different implementations are described, particularly implementations for selecting a predictor candidate from a set of multiple predictor candidates for motion compensation of a picture block based on a motion model. The motion model, may be, e.g., an affine model in a merge mode for a video content encoder or decoder. In an embodiment, a predictor candidate is selected from the set based on a motion model for each of the multiple predictor candidates, and may be based on a criterion such as, e.g., a rate distortion cost. The corresponding motion field is determined based on, e.g., one or more corresponding control point motion vectors for the block being encoded or decoded. The corresponding motion field of an embodiment identifies motion vectors used for prediction of sub-blocks of the block being encoded or decoded.

  • Publication number: 20200195974
Abstract: Management of frame rate up conversion functionality is improved through use of flags in a video bitstream controlling both sub-portions of a video image and sub-processes. Instead of a single flag controlling frame rate up conversion, at least one embodiment uses additional signaling to determine whether an encoder or a decoder should implement frame rate up conversion for a particular video coding portion or whether to implement one of the processes associated with frame rate up conversion.

  • Publication number: 20200195925
Abstract: Motion information for an internal sub-block of a larger block can be derived for use in encoding or decoding the video block or a coding unit by using the motion information for sub-blocks on the left or top edge of the coding block. The left column of edge sub-blocks and the top row of sub-blocks has motion information, such as motion vectors, derived using such techniques as template matching. The motion vectors of these edge sub-blocks are used in deriving the motion vectors of internal sub-blocks, which leads to better prediction and improved coding efficiency. In another embodiment, other motion information for internal sub-blocks is derived from corresponding information of the edge sub-blocks.
