  • Publication number: 20070171902
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method, device and system for handling short data packets, such as speech packets, in a communications network, and in particular a wireless local area network. The present invention is based on collecting several data packets from several users active on the network in one data transmittal protocol packet, transmitting this protocol, and receiving the protocol wherein the each of the several data packets are addressed to specific destinations. This reduces the overhead/data ratio and thus increases the capacity of the network.

  • Patent number: 7245922
Abstract: A method and apparatus provides for control of the quality of service for service groups by controlling the power of each service group. The carrier-to-interference requirements for which each service group achieves its minimum acceptable link quality is determined. The difference in carrier-to-interference requirements due to different requirements of fractions of satisfied users is compensated for. A power offset between the service group is determined using the compensated carrier-to-interference requirements.

  • Publication number: 20070091851
Abstract: In a method of selecting an access network from among one or more access networks capable of providing service to a mobile communication station, a radio quality from the terminal to each access network is determined (S1), for each access network, a utilization factor for at least one node is determining (S2), for each access network, a user perceived data quality, based on said determined utilization factor and said determined radio quality for the access network, is determined (S3), and at least one of said access networks, is selected (S4) based on the determined user perceived quality, whereby an improved user perceived data quality is enabled.

  • Publication number: 20060153081
Abstract: Route selection through a wireless mesh network between a source node and a destination node is based on minimizing generated interference in order to increase the capacity of the network. An interference energy associated with transmitting a packet over each hop in multiple routes from the source node to the destination node is determined. The interference energy for each hop is combined to generate a combined interference energy for each route. One of the routes is selected based on the combined interference energy determined for each route.

  • Publication number: 20060062179
Abstract: A broadcast channel, such as a broadcast control channel that carries a short message service, in a GSM/EDGE or similar communication system can be extended with additional timeslots. These additional timeslots can be pointed out in a tree structure, the root of which is in the SMS broadcast channel. The extended broadcast channel can be used for broadcast-like services provided under a multimedia broadcast/multicast service.

  • Patent number: 6950669
Abstract: Method and system are disclosed for improving the channel quality in a packet data radio network. In each cell of the radio network the packet data is measured based on channel utilization and/or packet queue measurements. A power control algorithm uses the packet data load to determine a common or equal broadcast or transmitted power level for the channels in the cell. The common broadcast or transmitted power may subsequently be adjusted on an individual channel basis for channels that fall outside a predefined quality window.

  • Publication number: 20050136961
Abstract: A method for downlink power control in wireless communication systems is provided. In response to a transmitter power change request from a mobile terminal (110) over a wireless connection, a power control parameter is determined at network level based on connection-specific information indicating the degree of priority of the connection (DPIi). The power control parameter preferably relates to a maximum connection-specific transmitter power, a power step size and/or a quality target, and is used by the base station to distribute transmitter power (pi) to the connection.

  • Publication number: 20050136960
Abstract: Methods for downlink power control in wireless communication systems are provided. In response to a transmitter power change request from a mobile terminal (110) over a wireless connection, a base station (122) determines a power control parameter based on its current total transmitter power PDL. The power control parameter preferably relates to a maximum connection-specific transmitter power, a power step size and/or a power increase probability, and is used by the base station to distribute transmitter power pi to the connection.

  • Publication number: 20050105492
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method in a wireless communication system and in particular better usage of available radio resources in such systems by controlling the party effects using user based scheduling back-off. The scheduling back-off according to the invention is based on providing and controlling the number of channels/frequencies/codes/timeslots or fractions of channel use to a terminal depending on information regarding radio channel quality obtained from the system.

  • Patent number: 6826410
Abstract: The present invention pertains to the field of methods and apparatuses relating to radio communication; and in particular to the part of this field that concerns cellular radio communication. The present invention addresses mainly the problem of improving reliability and communication quality in a cellular radio communication system (1). According to the invention, it is determined whether one of an uplink (25) or a downlink (25) of a radio channel (23) is subject to a Rayleigh fading dip. If it is determined that one of the uplink (25) or the downlink (27) is subject to a Rayleigh fading dip, it is then determined whether it is necessary to execute a countermeasure in order to avoid the negative influences of Rayleigh fading on the channel (23). The invention is not limited to improving conditions on one channel but may be employed to any number of channels used for communications in the cellular radio communication system (1).

  • Publication number: 20030212798
Abstract: Users of a given service in a wireless communication system that includes a plurality of multi-service subsystems are allocated to one of the subsystems in accordance with a combined capacity region of the wireless communication system. The combined capacity region is determined based upon capacity regions of each of the plurality of multi-service subsystems. The capacity regions of the plurality of multi-service subsystems are determined using a relative decrease in users of a first service as a function of an increase in users of a second service.

  • Patent number: 6418317
Abstract: The present invention is a method and system for managing frequencies allocated to a cell within a cellular network to assign certain ones of those allocated frequencies for use by channel equipment within that cell. The method measures at least one quality metric for each of the allocated frequencies. At least one measured quality metric for the unassigned frequencies are compared against at least one quality metric for the assigned frequencies. An unassigned frequency is swapped for an assigned frequency based upon the comparison step. Additionally, a voting step is used to indicate that either the unassigned frequency or the assigned frequency has a higher signal quality for communication.

  • Patent number: 5963865
Abstract: Each base station in a cellular telephone system includes a signal strength measurement device operable to tune to and make signal strength measurements on not only the frequencies allocated to other cells, but also on its own allocated frequencies. Measurements are made by the device on those of its own frequencies having idle traffic channels to obtain an indication of injected uplink interference. An interference penalty is then assessed against the measured uplink interference for those frequencies having more than a threshold number of idle traffic channels. The adjusted measurements for the frequencies allocated to the cell are then sorted in relative order of idle traffic channel (adjusted) measured uplink interference from a least (adjusted) interfered frequency to a most (adjusted) interfered frequency. An idle traffic channel is then selected for assignment at either call set-up or hand-off from the least (adjusted) interfered frequency.
