  • Patent number: 7623861
Abstract: A wireless mobile telephone (400) is operated so as manage the performance of “off-frequency searches,” that is, searches for base station pilot signals that differ in frequency from the pilot signals in the mobile station's active set. Whenever frequency searching is performed (such as responsive to emerging from a reduced-power sleep mode), the mobile station performs on-frequency pilot signal searching (902) upon a prescribed active set frequency. Only if a prescribed off-frequency searching condition (903-908) is satisfied, the mobile station additionally performs off-frequency pilot signal searching (912) upon one or more neighboring base stations' frequencies.

  • Publication number: 20090220239
Abstract: A method of communicating digital information over a dispersive optical channel includes encoding the digital information into a plurality of data blocks, each of which includes a number of bits of the information. A time-varying electrical signal is generated which corresponds with each of said data blocks. The time-varying electrical signal is applied to an optical transmitter (122) to generate an optical signal which includes an asymmetrically amplitude limited transmitted signal modulated onto an optical carrier. The optical signal is then transmitted over the dispersive optical channel (106). At a receiving apparatus (104) the optical signal is detected to produce an electrical signal which corresponds with the asymmetrically amplitude limited transmitted signal.

  • Publication number: 20080276239
Abstract: A method of operating a data processing system comprises executing a batch application, the executing comprising reading one or more inputs from one or more data files, performing updates on one or more records according to the or each input read from a data file, and issuing a syncpoint when said updates are completed. During the execution of the batch application, syncpoints are periodically issued and checkpoints are less frequently issued. Following detection of a failure of the batch application, the batch application is restarted with the last issued checkpoint, and the batch application is executed by reading one or more inputs from one or more data files, but not performing updates on said records, until the last issued syncpoint is reached.

  • Publication number: 20080256540
Abstract: A data processing system employing identify indicators associated with various components of the system. The indicator may be activated whenever a corresponding component requires maintenance, field testing, installation, replacement, and the like. The user may specify global and local conditions under which an activated identify indicator is reset. After the indicator is activated, the system monitors for the satisfaction of one of the conditions. When one of the conditions is satisfied, the system deactivates the indicator automatically. The global conditions apply across logical partitions in a logically partitioned system thereby reducing the occurrence of stale identify indicators on all partitions.
