  • Patent number: 8842372
Abstract: A flexible lens may be actuated to change its focal length by a deployable lens actuator. The lens actuator translates a rotational motion of an outer frame into a linear radial motion of a plurality of linear elements. The linear elements have fixed pins, which may be slidably coupled to cam pockets in the outer frame. The cam pockets have a gradually varying distance from the center of the outer frame. The rotation of the outer frame thus drives the cam pockets to slide about the pins, thereby causing radial motions of the linear elements. The linear elements stretch a flexible lens, thereby changing a curvature of the flexible lens.

  • Patent number: 8568901
Abstract: An alloy for use as a welding overlay for boiler tubes in a low NOx coal-fired boiler comprising in % by weight: 36 to 43% Cr, 0.2 to 5.0% Fe, 0-2.0% Nb, 0-1% Mo, 0.3 to 1% Ti, 0.5 to 2% Al, 0.005 to 0.05% C, 0.005 to 0.020% (Mg+Ca), 0-1% Mn, 0-0.5% Si, less than 0.01% S, balance substantially Ni and trace additions and impurities. The alloy provides exceptional coal ash corrosion resistance in low partial pressures of oxygen. The alloy also increases in hardness and in thermal conductivity at service temperature over time. The increased hardness improves erosion resistance of the tubes while the increased thermal conductivity improves the thermal efficiency of the boiler and its power generation capabilities.

  • Patent number: 8532075
Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method is directed to transcoding broadcast content, such as in a DVB, ATSC, and MPEG based network, to secure content suitable for an Internet Protocol (IP) based network. In one embodiment, a single multifunctional convergence appliance is employed to enable such transcoding actions as encryption, encoding, and/or encapsulation. For example, in one embodiment, an MPEG transport stream associated with the broadcast content may be transcoded to an IP-based transport stream. In addition, the transport stream may be decrypted, transrated to another rate, and re-encrypted using a different control word for re-encrypting, but a same service key to encrypt the different control word. The system is also enabled to transcode content formatted for the IP-based network to a content format suitable for the broadcast network.

  • Publication number: 20130196368
Abstract: Electrophysiological recording systems for analysis of cultured cells include an recording device and a housing for supporting the electrophysiological recording device. The device has a porous membrane with top and bottom surfaces and a plurality of pores extending between the top and bottom surfaces. The porous membrane defines a first cell culture region disposed on the top surface and an opposed second cell culture region disposed on the bottom surface. The electrophysiological recording device has a plurality of electrodes positioned on the porous membrane in between a first insulation layer and a second insulation layer. The plurality of electrodes extend to the first cell culture region of the porous membrane. Recording ends of the electrodes measure electrical properties of cells cultured within the first and second cell culture regions, while the contact ends of the electrodes are positioned in electrical communication with data acquisition equipment.

  • Patent number: 8429441
Abstract: A method, computer program product and system for controlling the maximum turbo mode of a processor in a turbo boost state. The method comprises limiting a maximum turbo mode available to the processor by over-reporting the amount of current drawn by the processor to the current monitoring feedback line to the processor, wherein the processor uses the over-reported current to maintain operation of the processor within performance specifications of the processor. An automatic calibration routine may be used to determine nominal amounts of current over-reporting that may be used to prevent the processor performance from exceeding the maximum turbo mode. In one embodiment, a digital potentiometer is included in the voltage regulator circuit to over-report the current as instructed.

  • Patent number: 8421305
Abstract: A microelectromechanical system (MEMS) device includes an actuator having a plurality of charge collection elements. At least one of the charge collection elements is configured to build up electrical charges by directly interacting with an energy field thereby actuating the MEMS through Coulombic interactions. An actuator for a MEMS device is configured to actuate the MEMS device through Coulombic interactions by pumping charges to the actuator when subject to an energy field. A method of actuating a MEMS device includes irradiating an actuator of the MEMS device with an energy field thereby building up electrical charges on the actuator, and actuating the MEMS device with Coulomb forces from the built up electrical charges.

  • Publication number: 20120091336
Abstract: A microelectromechanical system (MEMS) device is configured to be actuated directly by an energy field through Coulombic interactions to have a translational motion. The MEMS device can be untethered, and actuated by irradiating an actuator with the energy field thereby building up electrical charges on the actuator. The MEMS device can thus be actuated with Coulomb forces from the built up electrical charges to suspend a movable portion over a rail. In one example, the energy field includes an electron beam from a scanning electron microscope (SEM).
