  • Patent number: 6020457
Abstract: Dendritic polymers containing disulfide functional groups which are essentially inert under non-reducing conditions, but which form sulfhydryl groups upon being subjected to a reducing agent are prepared by synthesizing dendritic polymers having a core with a disulfide linkage or by reacting a dendritic polymer with a molecule containing a disulfide linkage and reactive terminal groups. In one aspect of the invention, dendritic polymers having a single disulfide functional group at the core are provided. The single disulfide group at the core can be reduced to form two sulfhydryl groups to which other molecules, such as proteins, oligonucleotides, peptides, hormones, other dendritic polymers, non-dendritic polymers, etc., can be bound.

  • Patent number: 5986995
Abstract: A magneto-optical head using a catadioptric focusing device comprised of an incident surface, a bottom reflective surface, a pedestal, and a body. The incident surface is generally flat and is comprised of a central diffractive, optically transmissive facet and a peripheral facet comprised of a diffractive-reflective surface or facet. In a data writing or reading mode, an incident optical beam, such as a laser beam impinges upon the central facet, and is diffracted thereby. The incident laser beam can be collimated, convergent or divergent. The laser beam passes through the transparent body, and impinges upon the bottom reflective surface. The laser beam is then reflected by the bottom reflective surface, through the body, unto the peripheral diffractive-reflective surface.

  • Patent number: 5902452
Abstract: The present invention discloses a method for etching a silicon surface or forming alignment marks in a silicon substrate by first coating the substrate with an oxide layer, then depositing and patterning a photoresist layer on top of the oxide layer and forming the alignment marks by a dry etching process utilizing fluorine/oxygen etchant chemistry for the simultaneous etching of the two layers in a single process wherein the oxide layer prevents the contamination of the silicon wafer by any silicon particles formed.

  • Patent number: 5893318
Abstract: This invention relates to a piston with skirt being formed by four sets of bearing grooves as the main structure, and a cylinder liner with four ball bearing rolling tracks. The bearing groove is in doughnut shape and has a circular cross-section to hold the ball bearing in circulation during the reciprocating motion of the piston. Two lines of ball bearings on each side of a piston pin are in line contact to the bearing tracks of the cylinder liner and share the piston thrust load. Lubrication of the ball bearings is ensured by oil slots through the piston head under the oil ring groove to the exposed ball bearings in rolling contact and to the top of the bearing groove.

  • Patent number: 5865986
Abstract: This is a process for upgrading a petroleum naphtha fraction. The naphtha is subjected to reforming and the reformate is cascaded to a benzene and toluene synthesis zone over a benzene and toluene synthesis catalyst comprising a molecular sieve of low acid activity. The preferred molecular sieve is steamed ZSM-5. The benzene and toluene synthesis zone is operated under conditions compatible with the conditions of the reformer such as pressures of above about 50 psig (446 kPa) and temperatures above about 800.degree. F. (427.degree. C). In one aspect of the invention, the benzene and toluene synthesis catalyst includes a metal hydrogenation component such as cobalt, nickel, platinum or palladium. In one mode of operation, the benzene and toluene synthesis catalyst replaces at least a portion of the catalyst of the reformer. The process produces a product containing an increased proportion of benzene and toluene, and a reduced proportion of C8 aromatics, particularly ethylbenzenes, as compared to the reformate.

  • Patent number: 5849846
Abstract: A catheter and/or balloon for a medical catheter is formed from a blend of polymeric components, including a first crystalline polymeric component and a second softening polymeric component. The polymeric material can also include a third compatibilizing agent to facilitate blending the first two polymeric components together. The first polymeric component can be a polyester or a polyamide, and the second polymeric component can be a polyolefin, or an ethylene copolymer. The third polymeric component is preferably an ethylene copolymer containing a reactive group that forms a covalent bond with the first polymeric component. The polymeric material forming the balloon or catheter also can include a catalyst to catalyze a reaction between the compatibilizing ethylene copolymer and the second polymer component.

  • Patent number: 5714166
Abstract: Dendritic polymer conjugates which are composed of at least one dendrimer in association with at least one unit of a carried material, where the carrier material can be a biological response modifier, have been prepared. The conjugate can also have a target director present, and when it is present then the carried material may be a bioactive agent. Preferred dendritic polymers are dense star polymers, which have been complexed with biological response modifiers.
