Patent number: 5224485Abstract: A portable data acquisition unit which features a sample order register which sets addresses in a multiplexer unit allowing one out of many electrical signals connected to the multiplexer to pass through at one time. The selected electrical signal is a sample which is transmitted to an A-to-D converter so that a digital signal is generated and passed to a communications port and then to a remote host device. A clock pulse increments the next address in the sample order list to the multiplexer to establish the next signal sample to be transmitted to the host device. At the host device, the original electrical signals may be reconstituted. For example, the electrical signals may be physiological signals derived from transducers associated with an EKG. The host device may be a remote EKG apparatus.Type: GrantFiled: May 28, 1991Date of Patent: July 6, 1993Assignee: Hewlett-Packard CompanyInventors: Daniel J. Powers, Jeffrey C. Osborne, Peter M. Galen, Susan R. Hart, William E. Saltzstein

Patent number: 4997536Abstract: Solid phases such as capillary tubes or solid supports used in chromatography, and in particular electrophoresis, are treated with oxidizing or reducing agents as needed to maintain or restore surface electrical charges or the lack thereof, which become modified during electrophoresis as a result of action by system components in the separation medium or the solutes themselves. The treatment is used as a means of achieving reproducible electroosmotic bulk flow when desired or suppressing unwanted electroosmotic flow arising due to the accumulation of charges on the surface. The result is improved reproducibility of retention times and component separation.Type: GrantFiled: July 6, 1988Date of Patent: March 5, 1991Assignee: Beckman Instruments, Inc.Inventors: Jack I. Patent number: 4907734Abstract: A compression bond is formed between a gold or gold alloy wire and lead/tin solder by forming a head on the wire and forcing the head into a pad of the solder by thermosonic, or thermocompression, or ultrasonic compression bonding techniques. This forms a gold/tin intermetallic compound which in turn forms the bond. The head of the wire is maintained out of contact with any underlying surface, and surrounded by the solder.Type: GrantFiled: October 28, 1988Date of Patent: March 13, 1990Assignee: International Business Machines CorporationInventors: H. Patent number: 4859301Abstract: Capillary zone electrophoresis systems are separated into two zones, one primarily for electroosmotic fow generation and the other dominated by electrophoretic effects, by the use of appropriately selected capillary materials for each region. Detection of the solute zones occurs in the electrophoretic region, minimizing or eliminating entirely the entry of the solutes into the electroosmotic region. The benefit acheived is avoidance or minimization of the adsorption of charged solutes by the capillary wall in electroosmotic flow.Type: GrantFiled: August 30, 1988Date of Patent: August 22, 1989Assignee: Beckman Instruments, Inc.Inventors: Nathaniel Brenner, James C.
