  • Patent number: 5702281
Abstract: A two-part field emission structure, and a method for making such a structure, is described. A substrate is provided having a first conductive layer thereon, a first insulating layer over the first conductive layer, a second conductive layer over the first insulating layer, and an opening formed in the first insulating and second conductive layers. A sacrificial layer is formed over the second conductive layer. A bottom portion of the field emitter structure is formed in the opening, by vertical deposition of a conductive material, whereby a third conductive layer, having a collimated channel over the bottom portion, is formed over the sacrificial layer. The formation of the field emitter structure is completed by vertical deposition of a tip material on to the top of the bottom portion of the field emitter structure, whereby a top conductive layer is formed over the third conductive layer. Lastly, the sacrificial layer, the third conductive layer, and the top conductive layer are removed.

  • Patent number: 5700890
Abstract: New ethylene/acid copolymer ionomers which contain both (meth)acrylic acid and certain dicarboxylic acid monomers are described. The polymers may be melt processed as readily as ethylene/(meth)acrylic acid dipolymer ionomers, in contrast to ethylene/acid copolymer ionomers containing only dicarboxylic acid monomer derived in-chain acid units. Polymers with typical levels of (meth)acrylic acid and low levels of diacid provide ionomers comparable to existing ionomers, but which have adhesive and polymer blend compatibilizing characteristics, while polymers with higher levels of diacid will exhibit properties which depend on in-chain diacid derived units.

  • Patent number: 5693438
Abstract: A new method for forming an anode plate for a color flat panel Field Emission Displays (FEDs) having improved gettering, was accomplished. The method involves forming on a transparent insulating plate (glass) an array of pixels of three phosphors comprising the primary colors and having in or/and around the array of pixels gettering material to provide more efficient gettering of volatile material from the FED cavity. The electrons are injected into the pixels when the electron field emitters are electrically accessed via the address and image forming circuits. The injected electrons heat and activate the gettering material in and around the pixels and provide very effective gettering in the FED cavity.

  • Patent number: 5691568
Abstract: A semiconductor device package for one or more semiconductor dice having core circuits and input-output circuits uses a package substrate having one pair of biplanar conductive planes and another pair of biplanar conductive planes. The pairs of planes are positioned in a coplanar relationship between the package substrate top surface and bottom surface. The top surface has lands connected to the conductive planes and to the power bond pads for the core circuits and input-output circuits on the semiconductor die. The top surface has many top traces connected to the signal bond pads on the semiconductor die. The package substrate may have a die paddle connected to one land and/or thermal vias to conduct heat away from the semiconductor die. Power may be supplied to die core circuits through one pair of planes and to die input-output circuits through another pair of planes to decouple the core circuits from the input-output circuits and minimize noise induced false switching in either set of circuits.

  • Patent number: 5689620
Abstract: A technique for automatically training a set of character templates using unsegmented training samples uses as input a two-dimensional (2D) image of characters, called glyphs, as the source of training samples, a transcription associated with the 2D image as a source of labels for the glyph samples, and an explicit, formal 2D image source model that models as a grammar the structural and functional features of a set of 2D images that may be used as the source of training data. The input transcription may be a literal transcription associated with the 2D input image, or it may be nonliteral, for example containing logical structure tags for document formatting, such as found in markup languages. The technique uses spatial positioning information about the 2D image modeled by the 2D image source model and uses labels in the transcription to determine labeled glyph positions in the 2D image that identify locations of glyph samples.

  • Patent number: 5689585
Abstract: A method for establishing a relationship between a text image and a transcription associated with the text image uses conventional image processing techniques to identify one or more geometric attributes, or image parameters, of each of a sequence of regions of the text image. The transcription labels in the transcription are analyzed to determine a comparable set of parameters in transcription label sequence. A matching operation then matches the respective parameters of the two sequences to identify image regions that match with transcription regions. The result is an output data structure that minimally identifies image locations of interest to a subsequent operation that processes the text image. The output data structure may also pair each of the image locations of interest to a transcription location, in effect producing a set of labeled image locations. In one embodiment, the sequence of locations of words and their observed lengths in the text image are determined.

  • Patent number: 5689644
Abstract: A local area network switch includes a set of input ports each receiving and storing incoming packets from a corresponding network station, a set of output ports each forwarding packets to a corresponding network station, and a switching system for routing packets from the input ports to the output ports. The output ports are interconnected to form an output token passing ring and the input ports are interconnected to form an input token passing ring. Whenever an idle output port receives the output token, it holds the output token and signals the input ports to start an input token passing cycle. During an input token passing cycle, an input port storing a packet destined for an output token holder terminates the input token passing cycle when it receives the input token and signals the switching system to establish a connection to the output token holder. To fairly distribute arbitration priority, input and output ports starting positions are rotated for successive input and output token passing cycles.

  • Patent number: 5685569
Abstract: A structure of book page for binding a book or album comprises a wide rectangular portion abutting a narrow rectangular portion, a pair of first flap members abutting two ends and a second flap portion abutting an outward side of the wide rectangular portion. Both the narrow rectangular portion and the pair of first flap members are folded upward along their predetermined folding lines and stuck up on the upper surface of the wide rectangular portion, whereas the second flap member is folded downward along a predetermined folding line and movably mats the under side of the wide rectangular portion. So that a double-layer book page is therefore accomplished with a concave strip on the upper surface and a movable convex strip on the under side along the inside margin of the book page. When binding, nest and stick up the movable convex strip of every upper page into the adjacent lower pages and bind with hard covers.

  • Patent number: 5682887
Abstract: This invention provides a method for determining the position range of the heart from a sequence of projection images which are acquired for 3-D volume reconstruction, such as SPECT myocardial projection data. The essence of this invention is the use of 1-D pseudo motion analysis so that the detection is insensitive to the image intensity distribution. Heart position is determined by comparing the sampled heart motion against a standard heart motion and determining similarities between the two as an indication of the position range of the sampled heart including the proximate center, upper and lower limits of motion.
