  • Patent number: 5630457
Abstract: The improved system utilizes a track which has a bowed internal surface to prevent the wheel of the carrier from frictional engagement with the side of the track. The curved surface which faces the wheels will not be engaged by the wheels even where the carrier turns to one side or the other. This is accomplished while leaving the innermost portions of the raceway in the same width position with regard to the wheels as is usual to prevent the carrier from coming off-track. The tolerances for the inner corners of the raceway opposing the wheels may be reduced to further prevent the possibility of jamming in the track.

  • Patent number: 5629237
Abstract: A method is described for forming tapered contact via holes in large scale integrated circuit structures which avoids the formation of a re-entrance profile. The re-entrance profile can form at the entrance to the contact via hole when a dry etch is used as a first etching step by redepositing material removed during the dry etch at the entrance of the contact via hole. This re-entrance profile makes the angle of entrance into the contact via hole greater than 90.degree. and the step coverage of metal filling the hole poor. This invention uses wet etching with a greater lateral etch rate than vertical etch rate as a first etching step in the formation of the contact via hole and avoids the formation of the re-entrance profile. The edges of the resulting contact via hole are smooth and the entrance angle into the contact via hole is substantially less than 90.degree.. The step coverage of metal later filling the contact via hole is substantially improved.

  • Patent number: 5624872
Abstract: A process is described for manufacturing a field emission device that has low capacitance as well as low internal resistance. The process begins with the provision of an insulating substrate on which cathode columns and orthonal gate lines, separated by a relatively thick insulating layer (to reduce capacitance), have been formed. Openings in the gate lines, located above the cathode columns and extending down to the level of the insulating layer, are then formed. Using the gate lines as a mask, the insulating layer is then etched down to the level of the cathode columns, thereby forming wells in the insulating layer. These wells are then filled with additional conductive material which is then partially removed. This results in the formation of conductive pedestals, inside the wells, on which the microtips (which are then formed in the usual manner) rest. This allows the microtips to retain electrical contact with the cathode columns while still keeping their apexes in line with the gate line openings.

  • Patent number: 5623571
Abstract: A polarization compensated waveguide grating router is formed by reducing the thickness of the cladding material deposited over segments of waveguide cores to be on the order of the height of the vertical extension of the optical field of the waveguide. The resulting "air-patch" segments increase the birefringence in the patch segments of the waveguides. By using an air-patch length which is inversely proportional to the length of each waveguide, the correct phase relationship can be maintained between the different waveguides to produce an InP-based router which is polarization independent.
