  • Patent number: 4373548
Abstract: A safety device for controlling the excess flow of gas adapted to shut off the flow of gas when the flow of gas exceeds a predetermined level. The device comprises a cylinder having in one end a throat member through which the gas flows, and a plurality of orifices formed around the cylinder through which orifices the gas is delivered to the throat member and then to a burner; a ball disposed at the other end of the cylinder, the ball having one side subject to the supply pressure of the gas and the opposite side subject to the delivery pressure of the gas. When the flow or delivery rate of the gas exceeds the predetermined level that is determined by the flow capacity of the orifices, the delivery pressure of the gas decreases to allow the ball to be pushed by the supply pressure of the gas so as to close the throat member, thus shutting off the flow of the gas.

  • Patent number: 4371406
Abstract: The ultra-miniaturized, active solid-state devices and circuitries have unique material bodies having signal-translating regions attached thereto for active signal translation. These regions, comprising melt-grown, or simulated melt-grown, metallurgical compounds including oxides, eutectics, and intermetallics, are of controlled compositions, concentration profiles, and electronic or other optoelectromagnetic properties. In some devices, the microstructure of the compounds comprises a plurality of microscopically thin, regularly-shaped and uniformly-spaced bodies of one phase material dispersed in a matrix of another phase material. The electronic conductivity of the bodies is substantially different from that of the matrix, and the bodies all terminate at microscopic distance from the pn junction (or other interfacial rectifying barrier region), so as to confine the signal current carries to flow mainly in only one of the phases. This achieves carriers microstreaming or microbranching effects.

  • Patent number: 4371933
Abstract: An improved method and apparatus are disclosed for generating circular arcs of any arc length greater than zero up to and including a full circle of 360 degrees. The method and apparatus can locate nonsymmetrical closest points for noninteger radius and arc center values. The method and apparatus is capable of generating the incremental move commands for drawing an arc either in the clockwise or counter clockwise direction which is a distinct advantage when used to drive a pen type electromechanical plotter. By dividing the generation of a 360 degree arc into eight octants, only two of the original eight directions need to be considered as candidate directions toward the next integer display matrix value to be displayed. The method and apparatus employ a novel initialization which provides a simple stopping test for any circular arc of arbitrary length and direction. Only simple addition and sign testing is used to display the circular arc.

  • Patent number: 4369802
Abstract: Plural strands of wire emerging from the cooling tower of a galvanizing line are cooled from about an elevated temperature to ambient temperature by heat exchange apparatus in which the strands are passed through an agitated, flowing stream of cooling water. The apparatus is designed to accommodate knots that connect strands in end-to-end relation or other strand surface irregularities. It also permits disorientation of the strands from their respective pass lines without disrupting operation of the apparatus.

  • Patent number: 4368509
Abstract: The invention discloses method for self-optiming, in real time, a machine relative to a specific performance characteristic in response to variations on a prescribed number m of variables. This method comprises selecting a statistical design; repeatedly and at n time instants adjusting conditions of the m variables and simultaneously recording the dependent values of the performance characteristic; analyzing the n sets of data to determine the functional relationship between the m variables and the specific performance characteristic; determining the combination of the m variables that gives optimum value of the performance characteristic; and setting the conditions of the m variables at the thus-determined combination. A machine in the form of a programmed microprocessor embodying this self-optimizing method is also disclosed.

  • Patent number: 4343610
Abstract: A motion system is provided by a platform generally parallel to a base and connected thereto by a column and powered and controlled extensible members, at least three of which are connected between distributed points around the column. In a three degree of freedom device, the column is conical, rigidly supported at its base with a universal joint at its top. The points of attachment define triangles in the base and in the platform surrounding the column with one extensible member connected between each.In the four degree of freedom version, the column is modified by making it effectively a column which is pivoted or guided at the base or contains an extensible member, preferably retains its triangular shape and its universal joint connection to the platform at its apex. For stability four powered and controlled extensible members are provided between points in the base and platform distributed around the column, a preferred pattern of arrangement being a square with the column at the center.

  • Patent number: 4335961
Abstract: Method and apparatus for determining the refractive index of an optical film over a wide spectral range is described that involves measuring the changing radiant reflectance (or transmittance) of the film at various wavelengths as it is being deposited upon a substrate, as for example by vacuum deposition process. By determining the values of the extreme limits, an envelope of the peak reflectance can be developed from which the film's index of refraction is obtained over the entire spectral range that is situated between the two extreme wavelength channels.

  • Patent number: 4318715
Abstract: The present invention provides a process for sweeping methane from a physical solvent used to remove carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide impurities from an impure methane stream. This process includes the steps of cocurrently mingling a mixture of physical solvent, methane, carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide with a flash gas to form a resulting gas and liquid mixture that has a higher concentration of carbon dioxide and a higher concentration of hydrogen sulfide than the liquid stream, and then flashing and separating the resulting stream at a pressure lower than the liquid feed pressure to yield a flash liquid that is further flashed at a pressure lower than the preceding flash pressure to provide the flash gas mingled with the feed liquid stream.

  • Patent number: RE31100
Abstract: A drum brake, primarily for a trailer, which gives normal braking torque in forward direction and low torque in reverse. This is achieved by having a pivoted lever acting between the one ends of two shoes remote from the ends between which the brake actuator is located. The shoes act on the lever at different effective radii and the forces applied by the shoes to the lever hold it in a first position during forward rotation, thus allowing normal braking torque, and a second position during reverse rotation which allows the ends of the shoes acted on by the actuator to move apart thus allowing a limitation of the reverse braking torque by limiting the stroke of the actuator.
