  • Patent number: 4562306
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for protecting computer software using an active coded hardware apparatus which is adapted to be connected by an interface connector to a communications port of a computer. The computer is directed by a coded software program in which a small section of the code of the computer software interrogates the communications port periodically to determine if the active coded hardware device is present and connected. The active coded hardware device has a permanently established preset code on an active presettable counter circuit which code is transmitted when interrogated. If the active coded hardware device is present when interrogated and the correct code returned through the communications port of the computer, the program is permitted to continue insuring that the software is properly protected at all times. The active coded hardware device with its particular code and circuitry are sealed in epoxy as a deterrent against tampering.

  • Patent number: 4544541
Abstract: A process is provided for removing hexavalent selenium from an acidic sulfate solution containing at least one metal ion from the group consisting of nickel, cobalt and copper at ambient pressure and at a temperature not exceeding the boiling point of the solution. The solution is treated with an agent from the group consisting of a compound which will produce nascent hydrogen in the solution and finely divided metal from the group consisting of nickel, cobalt and copper resulting from in situ precipitation of the metal in the acid sulfate solution. Thus, following treatment with the compound, the hexavalent selenium is reduced to a form separable from the solution by solid-liquid separation.

  • Patent number: 4533224
Abstract: A camera can create a combined image on the film with two different light sources, and it comprises a slide projecting device mounted between the camera lens and the camera body. Upon inserting a mask and a slide transparency into the slide projecting device, the subject image on the slide will be projected and merged with external image coming through the camera lens to form a combined image on the film without using darkroom montage technique or photo studio facilities; it is particularly useful and convenient for a sight-seeing traveller to put his (or her) own portrait against a landscape or architecture background without bothering other people to take a picture for him (or her) or using a tripod.

  • Patent number: 4514205
Abstract: Disclosed is an optical waveguide fiber coating system having means for cooling the hot fiber prior to the time that the fiber enters the coating apparatus. The cooling means comprises an elongated coolant tube through which the fiber passes. Cool dry helium is flowed into that end of the coolant tube into which the fiber enters. In a preferred embodiment, the coolant tube is surrounding by a chamber containing a liquified gas. The helium is cooled by flowing through a coil submerged in the liquified gas prior to being flowed into the tube. An iris diaphragm located at the fiber input end of the coolant tube prevents the entry of moist, warm air into that tube.

  • Patent number: 4497973
Abstract: A thermoelectric device exhibiting both structural integrity and decreased stress across the device notwithstanding the application of thermally cycled temperature differentials thereacross includes, electrically interconnected thermoelectric elements and a rigidly affixed substrate. Thermal stress is relieved by using flexible conductors to interconnect the thermoelectric elements, and by the use of a flexile joint to attach a second substrate to the remainder of the device. Complete elimination of the second substrate may also be used to eliminate stress. Presence of the rigidly affixed substrate gives the device sufficient structural integrity to enable it to withstand rugged conditions.
