  • Patent number: 4706767
Abstract: Method and apparatus for the improved operation of an electronic computing scale provides significantly increased resolution in a first weight sub-range (0-12 pounds in the illustrative embodiment). A coarser resolution is provided in a second weight sub-range (11-100 pounds). The raw load cell voltage is communicated along first and second branches, and subjected to a different transformation in each branch to produce first and second transformed voltages. In the first branch, raw voltages corresponding to weights in the low sub-range are mapped onto a desired sub-range of voltages. In the second branch, raw voltages corresponding to weights in the high sub-range are mapped onto a second sub-range of voltages. Depending on the weight on the scale, one or the other of the transformed voltages is applied to the ADC input terminal, and the digital output is scaled accordingly. The circuitry includes a range flag and logic circuitry for sensing the digital ADC output, and controlling the range flag.

  • Patent number: 4704378
Abstract: The process of the present invention for preparing granules of alumina includes pretreating an alumina powder by admixing with cold water in a mixer at a temperature below room temperature, e.g., such as below about 20.degree. C., to form a pretreated alumina having a pore volume saturated with water and further having a surface area of gel structure, and agglomerating the pretreated alumina in a fluidized bed to form granules sized in the range of about 1-3 mm. The process is particularly suited to producing activated alumina in macroporous granules. The process in one aspect further includes a cold hopper for cooling alumina powder prior to the pretreating step.

  • Patent number: 4701406
Abstract: An in vitro assay procedure for the detection of non-genotoxic substances is provided which utilizes a prepared cell culture whose cytoskeleton constituents are structurally identifiable as microtubules, intermediate filaments and microfilaments. The procedure combines the test sample with the cultured cells and detects a presence of epigenetic substances by identifying structural changes in the cytoskeletal constituents in comparison to normal control cells. The assay method is rapid, accurate, reproducible, and has been demonstrated to identify toxic substances which have not been previously detected by presently known bacterial and/or mammalian cell mutagenic assay systems.
