Abstract: Cosmetic compositions for the hair and skin are described which are characterized in that they contain a polymer which comprises recurring units having the general formula ##STR1## in which: k is 0 or 1, and l=1 if k=0, or l=0 if k=1,p=0 or 1 and the radicals R.sub.1 to R.sub.5 represent various specified organic radicals.

Abstract: Anhydrous nail varnishes are disclosed which contain a copolymer of:(1) at least one unsaturated polar monomer of the formula: ##STR1## in which: R.sub.1 represents H, --CH.sub.3 or --CH.sub.2 COOH; such that if R.sub.1 represents H, R.sub.2 represents either(a) H, in which case R.sub.3 represents:(i) --COOH(ii) --SO.sub.3 H ##STR2## or (vi) --COOR.sub.4,R.sub.4 representing a glycidyl radical, a mono- or di-hydroxy-alkyl radical, the alkyl radical having from 2 to 4 carbon atoms, or the radical --(CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2 --C)l--R', R' representing a methyl or ethyl radical and l representing 3 or 4, or(b) --COOH, in which case R.sub.3 represents:(vii) --CO.sub.2 R.sub.5 or(viii) --CONHR.sub.5R.sub.5 representing H or an alkyl radical having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms; and if R.sub.1 represents --CH.sub.3 or --CH.sub.2 COOH, R.sub.2 represents H and R.sub.3 represents --COOH or --COOR.sub.4 ;(2) at least one methacrylate monomer of the formula: ##STR3## in which: R.sub.

Abstract: Vinyl acetate and an unsaturated acid are copolymerized in the presence of bis (4-tert. butyl cyclohexyl) peroxydicarbonate. The resulting copolymer which exhibits improved aerosol propellant solubility characteristics is employed in aerosol hair lacquer compositions.

Abstract: Copolymers having tertiary amine groups and composed of 16-43% methyl methacrylate, 25-54% dimethylamino ethyl methacrylate and 12-52% octadecyl methacrylate are particularly useful as hair treating resins with conventional carriers and additives. The copolymers can be crosslinked by up to 0.15 by an unsaturated agent to produce preferred copolymers used in wave-setting lotions in amounts of 1-3%. Such copolymers can also be partially or wholly quaternized by a quaternizing agent. Those copolymers not crosslinked are particularly useful as hair lacquers, especially in aerosol sprays in amounts of 1-4%. The molecular weight for the subject copolymers averages 10,000-1,500,000 and copolymerization can be effected in a solvent with a catalyst wherein the reaction mixture is heated for about 6 to 24 hours at about 80.degree. C. When applied to the hair, the amount of lotion or lacquer used can be 10-100 c.c. and the treated hair is rolled. After treatment, the hair holds its shape well and is easy to comb.

Abstract: The copolymer of N-vinyl pyrrolidone and a vinylic, allylic or methallylic ester of a cyclic .alpha.- or .beta.- carboxylic acid is employed as a cosmetic film forming resin in cosmetic compositions for the hair, including hair setting lotions and lacquers, hair rinses and shampoos.

Abstract: Cosmetic compositions, particularly lipsticks, which contain essentially: (1) at least one liposoluble polymer having vinyl ester units; (2) at least 10% by weight 1-docosanoyloxy-3-(2-ethyl)-hexyloxy-2-propanol or a compound of the formula: ##STR1## wherein: R represents a radical derived from lanolin alcohol R' represents the radical C.sub.10 H.sub.21 and n is 1.5;(3) at least one fatty body; and (4) at least one non-toxic coloring material. Processes for preparing such compositions, and particularly for preparing 1-docosanoyloxyl-(2-ethyl)-3-hexyloxy-2-propanol are also disclosed.

Abstract: A process for reducing the volatility and improving the emulsifying power of an unsaturated or saturated cosmetic oil comprising heating the cosmetic oil, in the absence of a solvent and under an inert atmosphere, with a homopolymerizable and hydrophilic monomer in the presence of an initiator generating free radicals. The monomer is selected from the group consisting of N-vinylpyrrolidone, 2-hydroxymethyl acrylate, 2-hydroxymethyl methacrylate, acrylamide, methacrylamide, N-hydroxymethyl acrylamide, N-(carboxyhydroxy) methacrylamide, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, 2-vinylpyridine, 4-vinylpyridine and a monomer having the formula, ##STR1## wherein R is hydrogen or methyl, Y is O or NH, r' is methyl or ethyl and n is 2 or 3. The resulting modified oil is then purified to remove any insoluble nongrafted homopolymer.

Abstract: Novel polymers useful, in particular, in cosmetic compositions for application to the hair are described.

Abstract: A cosmetic composition for the care of the hair and the skin comprises a cosmetic vehicle and at least one copolymer having one or both of tertiary amine and quaternary ammonium functions. The copolymer, which can have a molecular weight between 2,000 and 500,000 is present in the composition in an amount between 0.01 and 15 percent by weight thereof.

Abstract: A cosmetic composition comprises a cosmetic vehicle and from 0.5-10 percent by weight of at least one copolymer having the formula ##STR1## wherein B represents Na, K, NH.sub.4, ##STR2## or 2-amino-2-methyl propanol-1; R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 each independently represent hydrogen or --(X)--OH; X represents alkylene having 1-3 carbon atoms or alkylene substituted by at least one hydroxymethyl; M represents at least one unsaturated monomer selected from acrylamides or methacrylamides substituted on the nitrogen by alkyl, the acrylates or methacrylates of monoalkyl ether of ethylene glycol or of polyethylene glycol, and N-vinylpyrrolidone; x is 22-64 mole percent, y is 13-71 mole percent, z is 6-23 mole percent, v is 0-22 mole percent, and x+y+z+v is equal to 100 mole percent.

A process for producing the said copolymer comprises reacting the monomeric constituents of the copolymer at a temperature between 45.degree.-100.degree. C. for a period ranging from 6 to 24 hours.

Abstract: An anti-solar polymer has in the macromolecular chain thereof at least one unit of the formula ##STR1## wherein F is a residue derived from an aromatic compound. The anti-solar polymer can also be one having in the macromolecular chain thereof at least one unit of the formula ##STR2## wherein F.sub.1 is ##STR3## These polymers have the ability to absorb wave lengths of light in the range of about 280-315 millimicrons. The polymers are employed in a cosmetic composition.
