  • Publication number: 20180128184
Abstract: Disclosed is a high-speed section disconnect for a driven turbocharger with a traction drive. The turbo shaft is attached to a turbine and compressor, and interfaces with a high-speed traction drive. A mechanical coupling connects the traction drive to a transmission, which is connected to the engine so that power can flow to or from the turbo shaft, but the mechanical coupling can be selectively disconnected so that the high-speed section of the driven turbocharger can also be decoupled from the engine during certain operating conditions to reduce mechanical losses in the system.

  • Patent number: 7801992
Abstract: A system for controlling the bandwidth allocated to a network connection between two nodes. The system receives a bandwidth change request, and generates and sends control commands to network switches of the connection in order to satisfy the change request. A bandwidth control interface, available over the Internet, has code for generating a display of bandwidths available for selection; code for receiving a bandwidth selection chosen from the bandwidths; and code for sending the change request to the network to adjust the bandwidth on the basis of the selection. The interface provides a bandwidth dial representation of the bandwidths that can be selected.

  • Patent number: 7769735
Abstract: A workload characterization system characterizes an exemplary business intelligence workload for use in sizing a hardware configuration required by a new database system running a similar business intelligence workload. The workload characterization system uses performance-oriented measurements to characterize an exemplary workload in terms of resource usage and performance metrics. The workload characterization system applies unsupervised data mining techniques to group individual business intelligence queries into general classes of queries based on system resource usage, providing insight into the resource demands of queries typical of a business intelligence workload. The general classes of queries are used to define an anticipated workload for a planned database system and to help identify the hardware required for the planned database system.

  • Patent number: 7415519
Abstract: This invention is useful in a networked system with densely packaged servers or server blades. The servers are connected to a system management network, a communication network and an image server. A management module attached to the system management network and a network switch monitors and controls network booting from an image server on the communication network to prevent over commitment of network and image server resources in order to avoid a boot storm. The management module collects system information and calculates the number of servers or clients the networked system can boot at any one instant of time without burdening the system. The management module logic controls booting via the system management network and service processor elements, which can block server booting and release servers to boot when other servers have completed their boot process.

  • Publication number: 20070251822
Abstract: Disclosed are chemochromic nanoparticles that can be used as pigments in paints, dyes, coatings, and inks. Because of the small size of the nanoparticles, there is an increased surface area of the chemochromic material that increases the speed of the response of the chemochromic material. The nanoparticles can also be employed in thin film detectors.

  • Publication number: 20070209937
Abstract: A remotely readable hydrogen detector is in the form of a tag or card that can be worn on clothing or mounted on a variety of surfaces and can be monitored from a distance for the presence of hydrogen gas. It includes a hydrogen sensor device, which changes in electrical resistivity in response to being exposed to hydrogen gas, that is incorporated into an electric detector circuit, which detects changes in resistivity of the sensor device, and, when such change in resistivity indicates the presence of some predetermined concentration of hydrogen gas, the electric circuit outputs a signal or state that indicates the presence of hydrogen to a transceiver circuit, which can transmit that information to a remote receiver or interrogator/reader via an antenna in the sensor device.

  • Patent number: 7257701
Abstract: A method and system for configuring an operating system in a computer system including language selection during bootup rather than at manufacture. A first aspect of the method and system comprises providing a plurality of operating system images in the computer system, each of the plurality of operating system images being based upon a particular language, selecting one of the plurality of operating system images based on the language supported by the computer system and loading the selected operating system image into the computer system. A second aspect of the method and system comprises providing a language-independent operating system image in the computer system, determining a language supported by the computer system, loading the language-independent operating system image into the computer system, and associating the language supported by the computer system with the language-independent operating system image.

  • Patent number: 7243347
Abstract: A data processing method and system according to the present invention in which a mass storage device (DASD) of a data processing system is partitioned to include a service partition. The service partition includes the current versions of peripheral device firmware, any BIOS extensions, and device drivers. During a system boot, the boot code will compare the firmware versions of all the peripheral devices against the archived firmware versions stored in the service partition. If a mismatch is detected, the system boot will typically force an update of the peripheral device firmware to the level that is known to be good. Any such firmware updates are recorded in a log that is accessible to system management applications. Any revisions to firmware may be imaged into the service partition so that the revised version will be incorporated into the peripheral device itself during the next subsequent system boot.

  • Patent number: 7199967
Abstract: An apparatus and method for transporting data cartridges between cartridge libraries. A data cartridge is received by a data cartridge transport device, pivoted, and then ejected to a cartridge sleeve of a second cartridge library. In one embodiment, the data cartridge transport device includes a pivot assembly; a cartridge sleeve, mounted to the pivot assembly; a cartridge eject mechanism, operably associated with the cartridge sleeve; a drive assembly; and a clutch assembly. The clutch assembly moves between first and second positions, wherein movement of the clutch assembly to the first position engages the pivot assembly with the drive assembly, thereby enabling pivoting of the cartridge sleeve, and wherein movement of the clutch assembly to the second position engages the cartridge eject mechanism with the drive assembly, thereby enabling ejection of a data cartridge from the cartridge sleeve.

  • Patent number: 6975587
Abstract: In a router, externally received messages addressed to an active line card are bridged to a protection line card. Each line card in the router is programmed to respond to such externally received messages by directing them to the protection line card associated with the active line card as well as to the active line card. The protection line card is configured with inbound and outbound path tables that are the clones of the inbound and outbound path tables of its corresponding active line card. Bridging is accomplished by revising descriptors stored in a plurality of line cards to indicate an association between an active one of the line cards and its protection line card. Received messages are addressed using the revised descriptors to the active line card and also to its protection line card. Upon failure of an active line card, its physical interface can be disabled once its protection line card has clones of the inbound and outbound path tables and bridging has been set up.
