    Abstract: A thermally-activated exhaust treatment device, such as a catalytic converter, for vehicles includes a core having an inner housing and a catalytic material. A jacket includes an outer housing enclosing the inner housing, but characteristically not contacting the inner housing. The inner and outer housings include walls forming a vacuum-drawn sealed insulation cavity around the inner housing. A temperature-activated variable insulator device is positioned within the outer housing and includes a hydrogen source and controls for controlling the variable insulator device. A vacuum-maintenance device is incorporated into the insulation cavity, and includes a small container, getter material positioned in the container, and a porous member allowing gas in the insulation cavity to communicate with the getter material. A multi-layered radiation shield is positioned in the vacuum space and is loosely coupled to the inner housing. A vacuum detector includes a visible indicator of the vacuum in the insulation cavity.

    Abstract: A fluid containment structure includes a containment vessel having an interior fluid chamber for fluid containment. A flexible bag is disposed within the containment vessel; the bag is vented to the external atmosphere outside the containment vessel. A spring is coupled to the bag to hold the bag in a coiled state until a back-pressure within the fluid chamber exerts sufficient force to commence uncoiling the bag against the spring pressure, allowing air from the external atmosphere to enter the bag and enlarge an interior bag space which is sealed from the interior fluid chamber.

    Abstract: A lithographic imaging method of the present invention includes the initial step of providing a substrate made from Mercury, Cadmium and Telluride materials (HgCdTe). The HgCdTe substrate is coated with a diazonaphthoquinone (DNQ) Novolak photoresist material to establish an imaging medium. The imaging medium is exposed to an image pattern and then developed in a tetra-methyl ammonium hydroxide (TMAH) solution. The TMAH solution includes a fullerene (C60) material dissolved therein to retard the subsequent etching of the imaging medium. The incorporation of fullerene into the photoresist material indirectly via the developing solution avoids the solubility and ultraviolet (UV) absorbance disadvantages inherent in adding fullerenes directly to the photoresist prior to placement on the substrate. After development, the imaging medium is etched to transfer the recorded image pattern to the substrate.

    Abstract: An apparatus and method for transporting data cartridges between cartridge libraries. A data cartridge is received by a data cartridge transport device, pivoted, and then ejected to a cartridge sleeve of a second cartridge library. In one embodiment, the data cartridge transport device includes a pivot assembly; a cartridge sleeve, mounted to the pivot assembly; a cartridge eject mechanism, operably associated with the cartridge sleeve; a drive assembly; and a clutch assembly. The clutch assembly moves between first and second positions, wherein movement of the clutch assembly to the first position engages the pivot assembly with the drive assembly, thereby enabling pivoting of the cartridge sleeve, and wherein movement of the clutch assembly to the second position engages the cartridge eject mechanism with the drive assembly, thereby enabling ejection of a data cartridge from the cartridge sleeve.

    Abstract: This invention is useful in a networked system with densely packaged servers or server blades. The servers are connected to a system management network, a communication network and an image server. A management module attached to the system management network and a network switch monitors and controls network booting from an image server on the communication network to prevent over commitment of network and image server resources in order to avoid a boot storm. The management module collects system information and calculates the number of servers or clients the networked system can boot at any one instant of time without burdening the system. The management module logic controls booting via the system management network and service processor elements, which can block server booting and release servers to boot when other servers have completed their boot process.

    Abstract: A data processing method and system according to the present invention in which a mass storage device (DASD) of a data processing system is partitioned to include a service partition. The service partition is typically located on a portion of the DASD beyond the highest address accessible to the operating system and application programs. The service partition will typically include the current versions of peripheral device firmware, any BIOS extensions, and device drivers. During a system boot, the boot code will invoke a peripheral device call that reports the device's firmware version level to compare the firmware versions of all the peripheral devices against the archived firmware versions stored in the service partition. If a mismatch is detected, the system boot will typically force an update of the peripheral device firmware to the level that is known to be good. Any such firmware updates are recorded in a log that is accessible to system management applications.

    Abstract: The present invention comprises a method and system for configuring the language of a BIOS of a computer system. The method and system comprise providing a plurality of BIOS images in the computer system, each of the plurality of BIOS images being related to a particular language, selecting one of the pluralities of BIOS images based on the language supported by the computer system and utilizing the selected BIOS to configure the computer system. Through the use of the method and system in accordance with the present invention, the language being supported by the computer system is determined when the computer system is booted up as opposed to when the computer system is being built. This results in an increase in manufacturing productivity since original equipment manufacturers can build computer systems without having to worry about language restrictions.
